Photonic crystals realized in LiNbO 3 have a great potential to reduce the size and increase the functionality of integrated optical devices. In order to accomplish these aims, fabrication know-how must be mastered yet it remains relatively uncharted. In this work we report the fabrication and optical characterization of photonic crystal structures in annealed proton exchanged (APE) LiNbO 3 waveguides. In our work, channel waveguides were fabricated by photolithography patterning followed by immersing LiNbO 3 wafers in molten benzoic acid at 235°C for 5 h. The thickness and the composition profiles of the APE waveguides were measured using the secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) method. The experimental characterization of the photonic crystal waveguides was performed and a photonic stop band with good sharpness can be observed from the transmission spectra.

This paper reports the development of global FDTD models incorporated with a quasi-real anisotropic ionosphere consisting of magnetized cold plasmas. Compared to the existing global models utilizing simple conductivity ionospheric profiles, the algorithms reported in this paper can sufficiently extend the global-scale electromagnetic simulations to much higher altitudes as the physics introduced by the spatially-varied ionospheric plasmas and the geomagnetic field can be fully included in calculations.

In this paper, we consider mobile data gathering in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by using a mobile collector with multiple antennas. By taking into account the elastic nature of wireless link capacity and the power control for each sensor, we first propose a data gathering cost minimization (DaGCM) framework with concurrent data uploading, which is constrained by flow conservation, energy consumption, link capacity, compatibility among sensors and the bound on total sojourn time of the mobile collector at all anchor points. One of the main features of this framework is that it allows concurrent data uploading from sensors to the mobile collector to sharply shorten data gathering latency and significantly reduce energy consumption due to the use of multiple antennas and space-division multiple access technique. We then relax the DaGCM problem with Lagrangian dualization and solve it with the subgradient iteration algorithm. Furthermore, we present a distributed algorithm composed of cross-layer data control, routing, power control and compatibility determination subalgorithms with explicit message passing. We also give the subalgorithm for finding the optimal sojourn time of the mobile collector at different anchor points. Finally, we provide numerical results to show the convergence of the proposed DaGCM algorithm and its advantages over the algorithm without concurrent data uploading and power control in terms of data gathering latency and energy consumption.

Complex structures of warm and hot dense matter are essential to understanding the behavior of materials in high energy density processes and provide new features of matter constitutions. Here, around a new unified first-principles determined Hugoniot curve of iron from the normal condensed condition up to 1 Gbar, the novel structures characterized by the ionic clusters with electron bubbles are found using quantum Langevin molecular dynamics. Subsistence of complex clusters can persist in the time scale of 50 fs dynamically with quantum flowing bubbles, which are produced by the interplay of Fermi electron degeneracy, the ionic coupling, and the dynamical nature. With the inclusion of those complicated features in quantum Langevin molecular dynamics, the present equation of states could serve as a first-principles based database in a wide range of temperatures and densities.

The task assignment problem with non uniform communication costs (TAP) consists in finding an assignment of the tasks to the processors such that the total execution and communication costs is minimized. This problem is naturally formulated as 0-1 quadratic programming subject to linear constraints (QP). In this paper, we propose a new approach to solve the task assignment problem with non uniform communication costs using the continuous Hopfield network (CHN). This approach is based on some energy or Lyapunov function, which diminishes as the system develops until a local minimum value is obtained. We show that this approach is able to determine a good solution for this problem. Finally, some computational experiments solving the task assignment problem with non-uniform communication costs are shown. © 2012 International Journal of computer science Issues.

The project MoSGrid (Molecular Simulation Grid) has been developing a web-based science gateway supporting the community with various services for quantum chemistry, molecular modeling, and docking. Users gain access to distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs) via intuitive user interfaces for sophisticated tools, specialized workflows, and distributed repositories. Currently, the MoSGrid community consists of about 120 users from a number of fields related to chemistry and bioinformatics located in Germany. However, the underlying security infrastructure is generally applicable and can be deployed in arbitrary projects. MoSGrid intends to address the international community by participating in the EU-projects SCI-BUS (Scientific gateway Based User Support) and ER-flow (Building an European Research Community through Interoperable Workflows and Data), and collaborating with the EU-project EDGI (European Desktop Grid Initiative). © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

Scientific computing has become one of the key players in the advance of modern science and technologies. In the meantime, due to the success of developments in processor fabrication, the computing power of Personal computer (PC) is not to be ignored as well. Lots of high throughput type of applications can be satisfied by using the current desktop PCs, especially for those in computerized classrooms, and leave the supercomputers for the demands from large scale high performance parallel computations. The goal of this work is to develop an automated mechanism for cluster computing to utilize the computing power such as resides in computerized classroom. The PCs in computerized classroom are usually setup for education and training purpose during the daytime, and shut down at night. After well deployment, these PCs can be transformed into a pre-configured cluster computing resource immediately without touching the existing education/training environment installed on these PCs. Thus, the training activities will not be affected by this additional activity to harvest idle computing cycles. To echo today's energy saving issues, a dynamic power management is also developed to minimize energy cost. This development not only greatly reduces the management efforts and time to build a cluster, but also implies the reduction of the power consumption by such a mechanism.

With the development of electronic of government and business, the implementation of these services are increasing the demand for servers, each year a considerable number of the procurement server and out of the server are too old to provide better service. However, due to the speed of the server out of nowhere near the rate of increase, the continued expansion of the server, on behalf of our need to prepare more space, power, air conditioning, network, human and other infrastructure. Derived from these costs, long years, the often less than the purchase price of the server. And the provision of these services is actually quite energy-intensive, especially when the server is running at low utilization, the making idle resources, waste, which is caused by the energy efficiency of data centers the main reason for the low. Even in a very low load, such as 10% CPU utilization, the total power consumption is more than 50% in the peak. Similarly, if the disk, network, or any such resource is the bottleneck, it will increase the waste of other resources. The "Green" became a hot key word recently. And we aimed the topic and proposed power management approach with virtualization technology. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new paradigm of coding that makes very interest to itself in the past decade. It's usually based on temporal correlations between successive frames which are called key frames. But this approach failed for high object motion in a scene and need very complex decoder to cover it. In this paper we propose a novel technique to use spatial correlation instead of temporal correlation in a frame by dividing a single frame to two sub frames which one of them is used as a key frame for generate side information at the decoder. Simulation results show a significant improvement on rate distortion parameter in DVC schema. © 2011 IEEE.

One of the most significant causes for performance degradation of scientific and engineering applications on high performance computing systems is the uneven distribution of the computational work to the resources of the system. This effect, which is known as load imbalance, is even more noticeable in the case of irregular applications and heterogeneous distributed systems. This motivated the parallel and distributed computing research community to focus on methods that provide good load balancing for scientific and engineering applications running on (heterogeneous) distributed systems. Efficient load balancing and scheduling methods are employed for scientific applications from various fields, such as mechanics, materials, physics, chemistry, biology, applied mathematics, etc. Such applications typically employ a large number of computational methods in order to simulate complex phenomena, on very large scales of time and magnitude. These simulations consist of routines that perform repetitive computations (in the form of DO/FOR loops) over very large data sets, which, if not properly implemented and executed, may suffer from poor performance. The number of repetitive computations in the simulation codes is not always constant. Moreover, the computational nature of these simulations may be in fact irregular, leading to the case when one computation takes (unpredictably) more time than others. For successful and timely results, large scale simulations require the use of large scale computing systems, which often are widely distributed and highly heterogeneous. Moreover, large scale computing systems are usually shared among multiple users, which causes the quality and quantity of the available resources to be highly unpredictable. There are numerous load balancing methods in the literature for different parallel architectures.
