Service-oriented computing is becoming a direction of computing technology. For realising the mission of serviceoriented computing, service-oriented architecture has been proposed to facilitate the application development via discoverable services distributed on Internet. That brings out service-oriented modelling as a new technical area to provide modelling and analysis techniques of service-oriented applications. The paper proposes a framework for agentbased service-oriented modelling. It treats both the service providers and the service requesters as service agents. Domain ontology has been used to provide the sharable domain knowledge as well as terminology for allowing the agents to understand each others. A modelling process has also been illustrated with the model development of an online auction service. © 2008 IEEE.

An effective workload distribution has a prime rule on reducing the total execution time of a parallel application on heterogeneous environments, such as computational grids and heterogeneous clusters. This paper presents two approaches to workload distribution based on analytical models developed to performance prediction of parallel applications, named VRP and VRP-SS. The workload is distributed based on relative performance ratios, obtained by analytical models constructed according to the rules described in the PEMPIs methodology. In the experimental tests we evaluated the strategies and compared them using MPI applications. The results showed the efficiency of our strategies by reducing the total execution time and improving the workload balance.

This paper presents a two-dimensional full-wave method for efficient analysis of power integrity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) of high-speed electronic packages. The power/ground planes in electronic packages form a multilayered parallel-plate structure due to the practice of using whole metal plate as power or ground planes. Each pair of power/ground plane is suitable to be modeled by a 2D finite-different time domain (2D FDTD) method. Both the conductor loss and the substrate loss are also modeled by the 2D method. Besides the parallel-plate structure, electronic packages also comprise of many transmission lines including microstrip- and stripline-type structures. Those two types of structures are also resolved by the 2D method. A third type of structure in an electronic package is via, which is modeled by using a contour integral approach. So a unified solver may be developed in the context of 2D method for the signal and power integrity analysis of electronic packages. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) issue of electronic packages is also studied in this paper. The focus of it is the radiation due to the edge effect of the parallel-plate structure in a package. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the method.

When an adaptive software component is employed to select the best-performing implementation for a communication operation at runtime, the correctness of the decision taken strongly depends on detecting and removing outliers in the data used for the comparison. This automatic decision is greatly complicated by the fact that the types and quantities of outliers depend on the network interconnect and the nodes assigned to the job by the batch scheduler. This paper evaluates four different statistical methods used for handling outliers, namely a standard interquartile range method, a heuristic derived from the trimmed mean value, cluster analysis and a method using robust statistics. Using performance data from the Abstract Data and Communication Library (ADCL) we evaluate the correctness of the decisions made with each statistical approach over three fundamentally different network interconnects, namely a highly reliable InfiniBand network, a gigabit Ethernet network having a larger variance in the performance, and a hierarchical gigabit Ethernet network.

Computational acceleration on graphics processing units (GPUs) can make advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction algorithms attractive in clinical settings, thereby improving the quality of MR images across a broad spectrum of applications. At present, MR imaging is often limited by high noise levels, significant imaging artifacts, and/or long data acquisition (scan) times. Advanced image reconstruction algorithms can mitigate these limitations and improve image quality by simultaneously operating on scan data acquired with arbitrary trajectories and incorporating additional information such as anatomical constraints. However, the improvements in image quality come at the expense of a considerable increase in computation. This paper describes the acceleration of an advanced reconstruction algorithm on NVIDIA's Quadro FX 5600. Optimizations such as register allocating the voxel data, tiling the scan data, and storing the scan data in the Quadro's constant memory dramatically reduce the reconstruction's required bandwidth to off-chip memory. The Quadro's special functional units provide substantial acceleration of the trigonometric computations in the algorithm's inner loops, and experimentally-tuned code transformations increase the reconstruction's performance by an additional 20%. The reconstruction of a 3D image with 1283 voxels ultimately achieves 150 GFLOPS and requires less than two minutes on the Quadro, while reconstruction on a quadcore CPU is thirteen times slower. Furthermore, relative to the true image, the error exhibited by the advanced reconstruction is only 12%, while conventional reconstruction techniques incur error of 42%. In short, the acceleration afforded by the GPU greatly increases the appeal of the advanced reconstruction for clinical MRI applications. Copyright 2008 ACM.

In this paper, we present the design of PU-DG optimizer toolbox (also known as PU-DG Optibox), which not only finds out the best strategy according to huge amount of simulation results but also proposes the min-max balancing workload method to upgrade the efficiency of execution in data grid environments. Data grid is one of key factors to build up large-scale dataset storage system and providing high performance computing capacity, by connecting scattered computing and storage resources located dispersedly in the grid. One major challenge in data grids is how to provide good and timely access to huge amount of data in distributed locations, given the high latency of interconnection networks. In this paper, we present the design framework of PU-DG Optibox for data grid environments. The proposed toolbox is a package containing a number of high-end techniques and methods running as middleware on top of data grid platforms, in order to optimize file downloads, by improving its efficiency and performance. The PU-DG Optibox provides users and developers possibilities for setting their own priority strategies. In addition, min-max balancing workload method is proposed to avoid that one computing node with lower network bandwidth to receive a job that has high complexity of job factor. Experimental results of techniques packaged in the proposed toolbox demonstrate its effectiveness.

Polarization switching in ferroelectric polymers is studied using a multiscale framework. A continuum Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire model for a first-order phase transition is parametrized for ideal all trans chains of P(VDF-TrFE) (70:30) copolymers using data obtained from molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. Thermal fluctuations and kinetics are accounted for by using a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model where the length and time scales, as well as the thermal noise amplitude, are also set from MD simulations. This method is used to investigate the nature of polarization switching in ferroelectric polymers and to test recent claims that ultrathin ferroelectric polymer films undergo intrinsic switching. Our simulations show that for a defect-free system, domain nucleation due to thermal fluctuations prevents homogeneous switching of the polarization, even at very small thicknesses. However, this nucleation does not substantially decrease the coercive field compared to the intrinsic value.

Industry widely employs the two-dimensional videoconferencing system as a long distance communication tool, but current limitations such as its tendency to misrepresent eye contact prevent it from becoming more widely adopted. We are exploring the possibility of a three-dimensional videoconferencing system for future interactive streaming of point cloud data, and present the preliminary research results in this paper. We have tested thus far with one sender and one receiver, using pre-recorded data for the sender. The sender, encircled by high-definition cameras, stands and speaks in a room. A cluster of computers reconstructs each frame of the camera images into a 3D point cloud and streams it across a high-speed, low-latency network. On the receiving end, a splat-based renderer employs a new algorithm to efficiently resample the points in real-time, maintaining a user-specified frame rate. Parallel hardware projects onto multiple screens while head tracking equipment records the viewer's movements, allowing the receiver to view a stereoscopic 3D representation of the sender from multiple angles. We can combine these visuals with appropriate use of multiple audio channels to forge an unparalleled virtual experience. This next step towards immersive 3D videoconferencing brings us closer to empowering worldwide collaboration between research departments.
