The U.S. Department of Defense high performance computing modernization program (HPCMP) has implemented sustained systems performance testing on high performance computing systems in use at DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers. The intent is to monitor performance improvements by updates to the operating system, compiler suites, and numerical and communications libraries, and to monitor penalties arising from security patches. In practice, each system's workload is simulated by appropriate choices of user application codes representative of the HPCMP computational technical areas. Past successes include surfacing an imminent failure of an OST in a Cray XT3, incomplete configuration of a scheduler update on an SGI Altix 4700, performance issues associated with a communications library update for a Linux Networx Advanced Technology Cluster, and intermittent resetting of Intel Nehalem cores to standard mode from turbo mode. This history demonstrates that SSP testing is critical to deliver the highest quality of service to the HPCMP users. Copyright 2011 ACM.

I am excited to share with you the DoD high performance computing modernization program (HPCMP) Annual highlights for 2019 and2020. As you will see, the HPCMP has had another outstanding 2 years of accomplishments and growth. Using the 2018 National DefenseStrategy as a guidepost, we have focused on supporting our customers from the government, industry, and academia with state-of-the-arthigh-performance computing (HPC) services and resources to help them find solutions to the most challenging science and technology(S and T), test and evaluation (T and E), and acquisition engineering problems facing our Department of Defense. With national defense prioritiesshifting to potential conflict with near-peer adversaries like China and Russia, the HPCMP ecosystem that has been developed for the past25 years has proven it is ideally suited to these challenges.

From aircraft design to certification, a significant volume of aerodynamic data is required to ensure optimal performance, meet regulatory standards, and maintain structural integrity. These data must span the entire flight envelope, encompassing pressure and shear stress distributions, global coefficients, and derivatives. Traditionally sourced from flight tests, wind tunnel experiments, or numerical simulations, the data are often of varying fidelity, ranging from handbook methods to high-resolution simulations. In recent years, the demand for efficient use of these data has grown, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, enabling the development of fast-running surrogate models. Unlike traditional high-fidelity simulations or experimental setups, which can be resource-intensive, surrogate models trained on these data sets deliver rapid predictions comparable to database queries. The AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Surrogate Modeling (AASM) group was formed to bring focus to data-driven and AI modeling in aerospace sciences, uniting experts from academia, industry, and government agencies worldwide. The AASM group prioritizes the development, accuracy, and applicability of surrogate modeling for aerospace applications, including design optimization, uncertainty quantification, systems engineering, and mission analysis—all critical to a digital engineering ecosystem. To support evaluation and comparison of methodologies, this paper introduces four benchmark cases: an aerodynamic database of integrated airfoil performance coefficients, a missile case for 6DOF generation, and two data sets focusing on surface pressure distributions. These benchmarks highlight associated surrogate modeling challenges and will be made publicly available through AIAA, offering valuable resources for the aerospace community. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments (CREATE) program was established as a new 12-year program in FY 2008 by the Department of Defense (DoD). The CREATE goal is to enable major improvements in DoD's acquisition engineering design and analysis processes by developing and deploying scalable, multi-disciplinary, physics-based computational engineering software products for the design and analysis of DoD Ships, Air Vehicles, and Radio Frequency Antennas. Meshing and Geometry (MG) generation is being provided by a fourth project, MG. CREATE is a multi-institutional, multi-service, multi-agency and multi-disciplinary program with participation by the Navy, Air Force, Army, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, industry, and academia. The CREATE products are being developed and released on an annual cycle. In 2010, the program released five new products: SENTRI 1.0 - RF antenna design; NESM 0.1 - Ship Shock Analysis; IHDE 1.0 - Ship Hydrodynamic Design and Analysis; Kestrel 1.0 - Fixed-wing air vehicle analysis; and Helios 1.0 -- Rotorcraft analysis. Enhanced versions of these products will be released every year starting in 2011. In 2011, five additional products will begin annual releases: DaVinci - a tool for the rapid physics-based design of air vehicles; RDI - an integrated suite of tools to enable rapid physics-based design of naval ships; Firebolt - components to provide models for gas turbine propulsion systems for Kestrel and Helios; NavyFoam - a high- fidelity hydrodynamics analysis tool for predicting drag and resistance, sea-keeping and seaway loads; and Capstone - components to enable the generation of geometries and meshes for all of the other products. The CREATE products are designed to be modular, maintainable, extensible, and scalable. Deploying large numbers of small, low-power cores has been gaining traction recently as a system design strategy in high performance computing (HPC). The ARM platform that dominates the embedded and mobile computing segments is now being considered as an alternative to high-end x86 processors that largely dominate HPC because peak performance per watt may be substantially improved using off-the-shelf commodity processors. In this work we methodically characterize the performance and energy of HPC computations drawn from a number of problem domains on current ARM and x86 processors. Unsurprisingly, we find that the performance, energy and energy-delay product of applications running on these platforms varies significantly across problem types and inputs. Using static program analysis we further show that this variation can be explained largely in terms of the capabilities of two processor subsystems: single instruction multiple data (SIMD)/floating point and the cache/memory hierarchy;and that static analysis of this kind is sufficient to predict which platform is best for a particular application/input pair. In the context of these findings, we evaluate how some of the key architectural changes being made for upcoming 64-bit ARM platforms may impact HPC application performance. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

In FY2008, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) initiated the Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments (CREATE) program, a $360M program with a two-year planning phase and a ten-year execution phase. CREATE will develop and deploy three computational engineering tool sets for DoD acquisition programs to use to design aircraft, ships and radio-frequency antennas. The planning and execution of CREATE are based on the lessons learned from case studies of large-scale computational science and engineering projects. The case studies stress the importance of a stable, close-knit development team;a focus on customer needs and requirements;verification and validation;flexible and agile planning, management, and development processes;risk management;realistic schedules and resource levels;balanced short- and long-term goals and deliverables;and stable, long-term support by the program sponsor. Since it began in FY2008, the CREATE program has built a team and project structure, developed requirements and begun validating them, identified candidate products, established initial connections with the acquisition programs, begun detailed project planning and development, and generated the initial collaboration infrastructure necessary for success by its multi-institutional, multidisciplinary teams. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The study of mobile networking modeling for ad hoc networks is still in its infancy, a full analysis environment of common utilities does not exist. While some very important capability currently exists, a means of integrating them together into a production quality environment does not. The Network Interdisciplinary computing Environment (NiCE) is designed to accomplish this task. NiCE is built around a new common data model and format for mobile networking experiments and codes. NiCE provides network researchers a cross-platform setup, runtime, analysis and visualization environment. Since this computational discipline is not as mature as some other physics based modeling efforts, it is difficult to exchange models and results between experimental and computational resources to develop high-fidelity, accurate predictions of how various networks will perform under realistic military conditions.
