Due to overall popularity of the Internet, e-learning has become a hot method of learning in recent years. Through the Internet, learners can freely absorb new knowledge without the restriction of time and place. Many companies have adopted e-learning to train their employees. The e-learning system can make an enterprise more competitive by increasing the knowledge of its employees. As we know, e-learning has become one of the most potential e-commerce businesses. At present, most e-learning environment architectures are in consideration of a single computer or server as its erecting foundation. As soon as its work load increases, the software and hardware need to be updated or renewed;this is a big burden to a company with insufficient budget. Thus, in this research we employ a kind of Grid computing technology, called "Access Grid", to integrate the idle computer resources in an enterprise into an e-learning platform for substituting the purchase of costly high-level server and equipment. The Access Grid supports group-to-group communication via high-speed networking over the Internet. It provides high quality audio and real-time video interactive interface for e-learning users. All the hardware cost is reasonable so that companies or academies can easily set up their own Access Grid Node. By using Access Grid technologies, enterprises can integrate their training materials into knowledge repository such as "Data Grid" as the e-learning VOD platform so that the knowledge can be shared and published more flexibly and widely.

This paper discusses the application of object-oriented and generic programming techniques in high performance parallel computing, then presents a new message-passing interface based on object-oriented and generic programming techniques — GOOMPI, describes its design and implementation issues, shows its values in designing and implementing parallel algorithms or applications based on the message-passing model through typical examples. This paper proposes a MetaService-based architecture for dealing with the problem of services management in grid systems. We introduce the basic idea of MetaService, and then discuss MetaService classification, new MetaService construction, and the MetaService working mechanism. A graph and a tree can be used for the optimization function of MetaService. An example from real life is used to explain the role of MetaService. We give an overview of a grid prototype system which has incorporated some of the ideas presented. A brief comparison is given between MetaService and other related work. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

An operation template is proposed in this paper for describing the mapping between operations and a subset of natural numbers. With such operation template, a job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) can be transformed into a traveling salesman problem (TSP), hence the integer-coding genetic algorithm for TSP can be easily applied and modified. A decoding strategy, called virtual job shop, is proposed to evaluate the fitness of the individual in GA population. The integration of the operation template and virtual job shop makes the existing integer-coding GA possible for solving an extension of a classical job shop scheduling problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Grid computing focuses on aggregating resources (e.g., processor cycles, disk storage and contents) from a large-scale computing environment. It intends to deliver high-performance distributed platforms for computation- and/or data-intensive applications. In this paper, we will study the enabling techniques for grid computing for high-performance computing. Our goals are to (1) understand the design of these key components, (2) set up a grid computing platform, (3) learn how to create grid-enabled high-performance applications, and (4) share experiences on constructing such platforms and applications from the status of Taiwan.

Internet computing and grid technologies promise to change the way we tackle complex problems. They will enable large-scale aggregation and sharing of computational, data and other resources across institutional boundaries. And harnessing these new technologies effectively will transform scientific disciplines ranging from high-energy physics to the life sciences. In this paper, a grid computing environment is proposed and constructed on multiple PC clusters by using Globus Toolkit (GT) and SUN Grid Engine (SGE). The experimental results are also conducted by using the matrix multiplication to demonstrate the performance. On the other hand, the approaches to deal with scheduling and load balancing on multiple heterogeneous PC clusters computer system are not mature. Self-scheduling schemes which are suitable for parallel loops with independent iterations on heterogeneous cluster computer system have been designed in the past. However, these schemes, such as FSS, GSS and TSS, can not achieve load balancing in extremely heterogeneous environment. We propose a heuristic approach based upon a two-phase scheme to solve parallel regular loop scheduling problem on an extremely heterogeneous grid computing environment.

The computational analysis of biological sequences is a kind of computation driven science. Cause the biology data growing quickly and these databases are heterogeneous. We can use the grid system sharing and integrating the heterogeneous biology database. As we know, bioinformatics tools can speed up analysis the large-scale sequence data, especially about sequence alignment. The FASTA is a tool for aligning multiple protein or nucleotide sequences. FASTA which we used is a distributed and parallel version. The software uses a message-passing library called MPl (Message Passing Interface) and runs on distributed workstation clusters as well as on traditional parallel computers. A grid computing environment is proposed and constructed on multiple Linux PC clusters by using Globus Toolkit (GT) and SUN Grid Engine (SGE). The experimental results and performances of the bioinformatics tool using on grid system are also presented in this paper.

Decision tree is one of the frequently used methods in data mining for searching prediction information. Due to its characteristics which are suitable for parallelism, it has been widely adopted in high performance field and developed into various parallel decision tree algorithms to deal with huge data and complex computation. Following the development of other technology fields, grid computing is regarded as the extension of PC cluster and therefore it future research development is highly valued. This new wave of Internet application is the 3rd generation of Internet applications following the traditional Internet and Web application. We have presented a grid-based decision tree architecture, and hope it can be applied on both parallel and sequential algorithms for the decision tree applications. Also, based on the scope and model of data mining applied in grid environment as well as user equivalent perspective, grid roles can be categorized into three types. We are hoping that through these definitions, software developers can define clear system processes and differentiate the application scope for software applications. To fulfil our architecture, we first apply an existing parallel decision tree algorithm-SPRINT algorithm in the grid environment. The performance and differences in many other areas are compared using different sizes of dataset. The experimental results are used for future reference and further development.
