Proxy cache is an effective means to reduce Internet congestion and facilitate user access to WWW resources. Many WWWeb users repeatedly access specific Web pages through links. This wastes caching space and unnecessarily increases Web traffic. We propose a novel reconstruction technique to alleviate this problem. On the basis of the user's access history, auxiliary navigation information is appended in the hit page copies returned to him. By interacting with the proxy cache server, the user can shortcut the linkage sequence and reach his target pages more quickly.

Motivated by the reconstruction of phylogenetic tree in biology, we study the full Steiner tree problem in this paper. Given a complete graph G = (V,E) with a length function on E and a proper subset R ⊂ V, the problem is to find a full Steiner tree of minimum length in G, which is a kind of Steiner tree with all the vertices of R as its leaves. In this paper, we show that this problem is NP-complete and MAX SNPhard, even when the lengths of the edges are restricted to either 1 or 2. For the instances with lengths either 1 or 2, we give a (Formula presented)-approximation algorithm to find an approximate solution for the problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

In this paper we present the design and implementation of RVision (Remote Vision), an open architecture, high configurable tool for cluster monitoring. We focus on the description of it's modular architecture, emphasizing the new concepts we are introducing for cluster monitoring, such as monitoring sessions and the support for dynamic linking of monitoring libraries. In addition, we measure intrusion with several benchmarks and applications under different scenarios. RVision distinguishes itself from other available tools for cluster monitoring because of its open architecture, high configurability, and low intrusion. It is being used in production mode, in our research center, and has proven itself as a powerful alternative for cluster monitoring, especially in heterogeneous clusters and cluster of clusters. © 2002 IEEE.

As Web services are increasingly accepted and used, the next step for them is the development of hierarchical and distributed services that can perform more complex tasks. In this paper, we focus on how to develop guarantees for the performance of an aggregate service based on the guarantees provided by the lower-level services. In particular, we demonstrate the problem with an example of an e-commerce Web site implemented using Web services. The example is based on the Transaction Processing performance Council (TPC) TPC-W Benchmark [8], which specifies an online store complete with a description of all the functionality of the site as well as a description of how customers use the site. We develop models of the site’s performance based on the performance of two sub-services. The model’s results are compared to experimental data and are used to predict the performance of the system under varying conditions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Clock synchronization is a fundamental requirement for any real-time distributed system operating with global schedules. The presence of a global clock permits co-scheduling, enhances the degree of synchronization between cooperating tasks of parallel programs, and permits implementation of quality of service (QoS) based communication. This paper describes the design and implementation of a high accuracy (/spl plusmn/5/spl mu/s) global clock on a Myrinet network of PC with low software overhead. The clock synchronization scheme uses a novel approach to reduce errors arising from variation of latency of transmitted clock values. The contribution of this work is that high-accuracy of clock synchronization is obtained without significant resource consumption. This makes the synchronization scheme equally suitable for high-performance and real-time distributed systems. The new approach achieves clock accuracy of the order of /spl plusmn/5/spl mu/s, compared to the other known clock synchronization algorithm on Myrinet that achieves accuracy of the order of milliseconds. Programmability of the Myrinet interface card and the presence of an on-board real time clock are critical to achieving this accuracy.

Automobile CAE software is mainly used to assess the performance quality of vehicles. As the automobile is a product of technology intensive complexity, its design analysis involves a broad range of CAE simulation techniques. An integrated CAE solution of automobiles can include comfort analysis (vibration and noise analysis), safety analysis (car body collision analysis), process-cycle analysis, structural analysis, fatigue analysis, fluid dynamics analysis, test analysis, material data information system and system integration. We put an emphasis on simulation of a whole automobile collision process, which will bring a breakthrough to the techniques of CAE simulation based on high performance computing. In addition, we carry out simulation for a finite-element car model in a distributed computation environment and accomplish coding-and-programming of DAYN3D. We also provide computational examples and a user handbook. Our research collects almost ten numerical automobile models such as Honda, Ford, etc. Moreover, we also deal with different computational scales for the same auto model and some numerical models of air bags are included. Based on the numerical auto model, referring to different physical parameters and work conditions of the auto model, we can control the physical parameters for the numerical bump simulation and analyze the work condition. The result of our attempt conduces to the development of new auto models.

In this paper, we design an algorithm of computing a constrained multiple sequence alignment (CMSA) for guaranteeing that the generated alignment satisfies the user-specified constraints that some particular residues should be aligned together If the number of residues needed to be aligned together is a constant a, then the time-complexity of our CMSA algorithm for aligning K sequences is O(αKn4), where n is the maximum of the lengths of sequences. In addition, we have build up such a CMSA software system and made several experiments on the RNase sequences, which mainly function in catalyzing the degradation of RNA molecules. The resulting alignments illustrate the practicability of our method. © 2002 IEEE.

Treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) has seen dramatic improvements over the last years. With improved surgical methods the rate of mortality has been going down to about 20% and less today. One way to treat such an AAA is to implant stent grafts in order to channel the blood at its way through the aneurysm using endovascular methods. In this procedure the surgeon delivers the stent graft via a catheter inside the dilatation in which it unfolds, taking away the pressure from the weakened aortic wall. This method has been proven to work well and patients typically can be released as early as 24 hours after receiving this procedure. However, complications may occur after the treatment, which can include leakages and migration of the stent or even its elemental breakdown. The causes for these problems are not exactly known. In order to get a better understanding of the behavior of the complex mechanical systems simulation is a feasible approach. This requires adequate data gathering for the individual patient, a feasible mathematical and numerical models, and substantial compute performance.

Overlap of computations and communications is an effective mechanism to improve the performance of parallel/distributed applications significantly. This overlap can be achieved efficiently by using data partitioning and properly scheduling the data transfer. Various asynchronous communication primitives, that are provided by most message passing tools (e.g. PVM, MPI), can be used to implement the required. Here, we present a design model, the Distributed Software Design Model (DSDM) and show how it can be applied to optimize parallel/distributed applications. We show through several examples, the Master-Slave Merge Sorting Application and the astrophysical N-Body Problem, how the DSDM can be used to develop efficient and optimized implementations of parallel and distributed algorithms.

In applications such as scientific and medical visualization, highly detailed polygonal meshes are needed. Rendering these polygonal meshes usually exceeds the capabilities of graphics hardware. To improve rendering efficiency and maintain proper interactivity, the polygonal mesh simplification technique is commonly used to reduce the number of polygons of the mesh and construct a multiresolution representation. We propose a new and simple constraint scheme based on the quadric error metric proposed by Garland and Heckbert (1997, 1998) to preserve face colors and boundary edges during the simplification process. In addition, our method generates progressive meshes that store the polygonal mesh in a continuous multi-resolution representation. According to our experimental results, this new method is successful in preserving face colors and boundary edges. Moreover, we compare the latency of resolution changes for progressive meshes of various models.
