Energy system models underpin decisions by energy system planners and operators. Energy system modelling faces a transformation: accounting for changing meteorological conditions imposed by climate change. To enable that transformation, a community of practice in energy-climate modelling has started to form that aims to better integrate energy system models with weather and climate models. Here, we evaluate the disconnects between the energy system and climate modelling communities, then lay out a research agenda to bridge those disconnects. In the near-term, we propose interdisciplinary activities for expediting uptake of future climate data in energy system modelling. In the long-term, we propose a transdisciplinary approach to enable development of (1) energy-system-tailored climate datasets for historical and future meteorological conditions and (2) energy system models that can effectively leverage those datasets. This agenda increases the odds of meeting ambitious climate mitigation goals by systematically capturing and mitigating climate risk in energy sector decision making. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

In wireless sensor networks,congestion leads to buffer overflowing,and increases *** traditional solutions use rate adjustment to mitigate congestion,thus increasing the delay.A Delay-aware congestion control protocol(DACC)was presented to mitigate congestion and decrease *** order to improve the accuracy of the existing congestion detection model which is based on the buffer occupancy of a single node,DACC presents a new model considering both the real-time buffer occupancy and the average transmission time of *** uses the untapped bits in the IEEE 802.11 Distributed coordination function(DCF)frames header to carry congestion *** the congestion alleviation period,DACC presents a channel occupancy mechanism which is based on the real-time buffer occupancy for the purpose of decreasing delay and preventing packet *** results indicate that in terms of delay,packet delivery ratio,collision and buffer load,DACC has comparative advantages than those of 802.11 DCF,Priority-based congestion control protocol(PCCP)and Decoupling congestion control and fairness(DCCF).

Learning to learn plays a pivotal role in meta-learning (MTL) to obtain an optimal learning model. In this paper, we investigate image recognition for unseen categories of a given dataset with limited training information. We deploy a zero-shot learning (ZSL) algorithm to achieve this goal. We also explore the effect of parameter tuning on performance of semantic auto-encoder (SAE). We further address the parameter tuning problem for meta-learning, especially focusing on zero-shot learning. By combining different embedded parameters, we improved the accuracy of tuned-SAE. Advantages and disadvantages of parameter tuning and its application in image classification are also explored.

Skyrmions are localized solitonic spin textures with protected topology, which are promising as information carriers in ultra-dense and energy-efficient logics and memories. Magnetic skyrmions have been recently observed in thick magnetic multilayers and are stabilized by the extrinsic interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) and external magnetic fields. Here, we investigate the intrinsic magnetic skyrmions in four monolayer Janus van der Waals magnets, MnSSe, MnSTe, MnSeTe, and VSeTe, by the first-principles calculations combined with micromagnetic simulations. It is found that the monolayer Janus MnSTe and MnSeTe with out-of-plane asymmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have a large intrinsic DMI. Using micromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate that skyrmions can be stabilized in monolayer MnSTe and MnSeTe within sub-50 nm scale in the absence of magnetic fields. On the other hand, VSeTe (in-plane easy axis) forms chiral magnetic domains. Finally, the size and shape of skyrmions can be regulated using an external magnetic field. Scientific applications are often irregular and characterized by large computationally-intensive parallel loops. Dynamic loop scheduling (DLS) techniques improve the performance of computationally-intensive scientific applications via load balancing of their execution on high-performance computing (HPC) systems. Identifying the most suitable choices of data distribution strategies, system sizes, and DLS techniques which improve the performance of a given application, requires intensive assessment and a large number of exploratory native experiments (using real applications on real systems), which may not always be feasible or practical due to associated time and costs. In such cases, simulative experiments are more appropriate for studying the performance of applications. This motivates the question of 'How realistic are the simulations of executions of scientific applications using DLS on HPC platforms?' In the present work, a methodology is devised to answer this question. It involves the experimental verification and analysis of the performance of DLS in scientific applications. The proposed methodology is employed for a computer vision application executing using four DLS techniques on two different HPC platforms, both via native and simulative experiments. The evaluation and analysis of the native and simulative results indicate that the accuracy of the simulative experiments is strongly influenced by the approach used to extract the computational effort of the application (FLOP-or time-based), the choice of application model representation into simulation (data or task parallel) and the available HPC subsystem models in the simulator (multi-core CPUs, memory hierarchy and network topology). The minimum and the maximum percent errors achieved between the native and the simulative experiments are 0.95% and 8.03%, respectively.

The problem of item selling with the objective of maximizing the revenue is studied. Given a seller with k types of items and n single-minded buyers, i.e., each buyer is only interested in a particular bundle of items, to maximize the revenue, the seller must carefully assign some amount of bundles to each buyer with respect to the buyer’s accepted price. Each buyer bi is associated with a value function vi(·) such that vi(x) is the accepted unit bundle price bi is willing to pay for x bundles. We show that the single-minded item selling problem is NP-hard. Moreover, we give an O(√k)-approximation algorithm. For the online version, i.e., the buyers come one by one and the decision on each buyer must be made before the arrival of the next buyer, an O(√k · (log h + log k))- competitive algorithm is achieved, where h is the highest unit item price among all buyers. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

As for a pipe-line system subjected to complex operations, an approach is proposed to synthesize the controller via Petri nets (PNs) such that the plant is run as concurrently as possible and the loads of equipments are balanced. A P-timed and labeled PN is designed to model the whole process of a pipe-line system, where tasks, including transporting material from one tank to another and cleaning tank, are represented by operational places, and level sensors amounted in tanks are represented by labels assigned to transitions. Further, monitor places are designed to resolve the conflict relations among tasks due to the shared valves and pipes. An method is presented to translate an PN controller into a CIF3 (Compositional Interchange Format) model, which can be converted into a PLC program in the CIF3 tool. A beer filtration plant is taken as an example to illustrate the approach, and its simulation experiments are carried out to verify the theoretic results.

Tongue image segmentation is a crucial step in developing an automatic tongue diagnosis system. After exploring characteristics of image thresholding in different color spaces, we propose a simple and effective tongue image segmentation method. Specifically, the proposed method first extracts an initial tongue body region by performing image thresholding on the transformed hue component in HSI (Hue, Saturation, and Intensity) color space. Then, one of two image thresholding results on the red component of an original tongue image is adaptively selected to find the gap region between the tongue body root and the upper lip. Finally, the initial tongue body region is refined by removing fake object regions such as the upper lip to obtain final tongue image segmentation result. Experimental results on a tongue image dataset containing 200 subjects demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The non-uniform sampling is a powerful approach to enable fast acquisition but requires sophisticated reconstruction algorithms. Faithful reconstruction from partial sampled exponentials is highly expected in general signal processing and many applications. Deep learning has shown astonishing potential in this field but many existing problems, such as lack of robustness and explainability, greatly limit its applications. In this work, by combining merits of the sparse model-based optimization method and data-driven deep learning, we propose a deep learning architecture for spectra reconstruction from undersampled data, called MoDern. It follows the iterative reconstruction in solving a sparse model to build the neural network and we elaborately design a learnable soft-thresholding to adaptively eliminate the spectrum artifacts introduced by undersampling. Extensive results on both synthetic and biological data show that MoDern enables more robust, high-fidelity, and ultra-fast reconstruction than the state-of-the-art methods. Remarkably, MoDern has a small number of network parameters and is trained on solely synthetic data while generalizing well to biological data in various scenarios. Furthermore, we extend it to an open-access and easy-to-use cloud computing platform (XCloud-MoDern), contributing a promising strategy for further development of biological applications. Recent years have witnessed a processor develop- ment trend that integrates central processing unit （CPU） and graphic processing unit （GPU） into a single chip. The inte- gration helps to save some host-device data copying that a discrete GPU usually requires, but also introduces deep re- source sharing and possible interference between CPU and GPU. This work investigates the performance implications of independently co-running CPU and GPU programs on these platforms. First, we perform a comprehensive measurement that covers a wide variety of factors, including processor ar- chitectures, operating systems, benchmarks, timing mecha- nisms, inputs, and power management schemes. These mea- surements reveal a number of surprising observations. We an- alyze these observations and produce a list of novel insights, including the important roles of operating system （OS） con- text switching and power management in determining the program performance, and the subtle effect of CPU-GPU data copying. Finally, we confirm those insights through case studies, and point out some promising directions to mitigate anomalous performance degradation on integrated heteroge- neous processors.
