We propose and experiment a Social Networking Service (SNS) for local communities for tsunami disaster control. It is an easy-to-use GIS-based system with powerful GIS analysis capabilities. One of the features of the system is resident participation. The GIS layer structure proposed in this paper nicely supports this user participation. The system architecture and the use of the system for tsunami disaster control are discussed. We report ongoing developments in Hachinohe-City, Japan.

We present a novel approach to conserve power in networked mobile devices. Our approach exploits communication within a pervasive smart space as an opportunity to save power as opposed to the classic view of communication as a drain on resources. We outsource intensive computations to the network whenever a pervasive connection to the Internet exists and when it pays off to do so. At compile-time our approach generates two versions of the program being compiled, a client version and a server version, each containing the necessary code to handle the run-time decision of executing code locally on the mobile device or remotely to the server based on power efficiency. We utilize a technique from real-time systems to help the compiler generate highly accurate code by calculating the number of loop iterations for each candidate section of code. This approach has the advantage of analyzing applications at a finer granularity than other similar methodologies. This is because the candidate code sections are CPU blocks represented mostly by loops. Our experimental results performed on Intel's XScale architecture and the Wi-Fi wireless technology show significant savings in power consumption by the mobile device

The development of effective classification techniques, particularly unsupervised classification, is important for real-world applications since information about the training data before classification is relatively unknown. In this paper, a novel unsupervised classification algorithm is proposed to meet the increasing demand in the domain of network intrusion detection. Our proposed UNPCC (Unsu-pervised Principal Component Classifier) algorithm is a multi-class unsupervised classifier with absolutely no requirements for any a priori class related data information (e.g., the number of classes and the maximum number of instances belonging to each class), and an inherently natural supervised classification scheme, both which present high detection rates and several operational advantages (e.g., lower training time, lower classification time, lower processing power requirement, and lower memory requirement). Experiments have been conducted with the KDD Cup 99 data and network traffic data simulated from our private network testbed, and the promising results demonstrate that our UNPCC algorithm outperforms several well-known supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper we examine the approach of enabling parallel processing of general applications on top of grids by adapting and extending methods that have been used successfully for tightly coupled systems. Our approach is based on the fundamental design of the software distributed shared memory (SDSM) model which we use in order to achieve the performance objectives of our environment. In this work we propose a new dynamically reduced message protocol (RMP) for DSM systems, which adopts the scope-consistency model (Iftode et al., 1996). First, we outline our basic RMP protocol and then we propose two enhancements: the RMP-MH (multiple home) and the RMP-LM (lock migration). Our experimentation with RMP resulted in significant improvements by reducing the total messages and the overall number of page faults. In order to demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of the RMP protocol we used SPLASH as well as synthetic application benchmarks, to highlight the protocols advantages, demonstrating a reduction in the total execution time of up to 30% for SPLASH applications and up to 61% for the synthetic application benchmarks

Traditionally, interlibrary cooperation is an important interaction between libraries. Nevertheless, the emerging digital library architecture has not explicitly supported this requirement. In this paper, we proposed an interlibrary cooperation framework for digital libraries using P2P technology. An application of this framework to Faculty Publication Sharing System was presented. Besides, a reputation model based on data mining is utilized to provide libraries with incentives to join this framework

Road boundary detection and tracking is an important and integral function in advanced driver-assistance system. This paper proposes an algorithm, which can follow multi-kinds of lane, straight and curved, quickly and robustly. The algorithm uses several masks to extract blobs of road markings, combining with KNN function to remove the disturbance. Further more, road is modeled as a 3D surface, and some important parameters of current lane are provided on real-time by tracking based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The results of experiments, which have been done in urban road, show that the algorithm is adapted to many road conditions. Even in a complex driving environment, it also has a good performance. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel supervised classification approach called Collateral Representative Subspace Projection Modeling (C-RSPM) is presented. C-RSPM facilitates schemes for collateral class modeling, class-ambiguity solving, and classification, resulting a multi-class supervised classifier with high detection rate and various operational benefits including low training and classification times and low processing power and memory requirements. In addition, C-RSPM is capable of adaptively selecting nonconsecutive principal dimensions from the statistical information of the training data set to achieve an accurate modeling of a representative subspace. Experimental results have shown that the proposed C-RSPM approach outperforms other supervised classification methods such as SIMCA, C4.5 decision tree, Decision Table (DT), Nearest Neighbor (NN), KNN, Support Vector Machine (SVM), 1-NN Best Warping Window DTW, 1-NN DTW with no Warping Window, and the well-known classifier boosting method AdaBoost with SVM. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a p2p network based location search algorithm which can be used to establish connections in Internet telephony. By using the location search algorithm, the caller can identify the peer it is calling. The algorithm is based upon the concept of gradient search and is applicable upon unstructured networks. It is inspired by a biological phenomenon called haptotaxis. The algorithm performs at par with DHT-based location search algorithms, however it is much more robust than such structured algorithms. We also present some initial analysis to explain the reason behind the superiority of the algorithm

Establishing suitable programming models for pervasive spaces is essential in improving the productivity, enhancing the quality of pervasive systems, and creating an open platform for interoperability. Two different models, namely, the context-driven model and the service-oriented model, have been proposed and studied for their feasibilities as the foundation for implementing programmable pervasive spaces. We present these two alternatives and contrast their advantages and disadvantages.

Sample based texture synthesis allows the generation of arbitrarily sized textures based on a small sample image. One main drawback of the technique is that a new pixel or patch is selected only considering local information in the generated texture. Thus structural error can't assure to be avoided for structural textures. To accelerate texture synthesis process and to avoid structural mismatch in the output picture, we present in this paper a structural pattern analysis (SPA) algorithm and a texture synthesis method using the algorithm. The pattern analysis tool also quantizes the texture randomness in macro scope view. It can be used in other applications such as automatic texture classification and quality evaluation of synthesized texture. We illustrate our result with some examples
