Semantic Communication (SC) has emerged as a novel communication paradigm in recent years, successfully transcending the Shannon physical capacity limits through innovative semantic transmission concepts. Nevertheless, extant Image Semantic Communication (ISC) systems face several challenges in dynamic environments, including low semantic density, catastrophic forgetting, and uncertain Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). To address these challenges, we propose a novel Vision-Language Model-based Cross-modal Semantic Communication (VLM-CSC) system. The VLM-CSC comprises three novel components: (1) Cross-modal Knowledge Base (CKB) is used to extract high-density textual semantics from the semantically sparse image at the transmitter and reconstruct the original image based on textual semantics at the receiver. The transmission of high-density semantics contributes to alleviating bandwidth pressure. (2) Memory-assisted Encoder and Decoder (MED) employ a hybrid long/short-term memory mechanism, enabling the semantic encoder and decoder to overcome catastrophic forgetting in dynamic environments when there is a drift in the distribution of semantic features. (3) Noise Attention Module (NAM) employs attention mechanisms to adaptively adjust the semantic coding and the channel coding based on SNR, ensuring the robustness of the CSC system. Moisture content is one of the important indexes of food storage security. The existing detection methods are time-consuming and high cost such that it is difficult to realize online moisture detection. In this paper, according to the dielectric properties of wheat, we propose a wheat moisture content detection system with commercial Wi-Fi devices, termed WiWm-EP. First, we introduce the relationship between the moisture content of wheat and its dielectric constant. Then, we establish an equivalent permittivity (EP) model to characterize wheat moisture content, where the EP can be calculated from channel state information (CSI) of the dual antenna model. Besides, we build the fitting function between the EP and the moisture content as the wheat moisture detection model. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the system through different experiments. The average relative error of the detection results of five wheat samples with different moisture contents is less than 3%.

A multiagent sequential decision problem has been seen in many critical applications including urban transportation, autonomous driving cars, military operations, etc. Its widely known solution, namely multiagent reinforcement learning, has evolved tremendously in recent years. Among them, the solution paradigm of modeling other agents attracts our interest, which is different from traditional value decomposition or communication mechanisms. It enables agents to understand and anticipate others’ behaviors and facilitates their collaboration. Inspired by recent research on the legibility that allows agents to reveal their intentions through their behavior, we propose a multiagent active legibility framework to improve their performance. The legibility-oriented framework allows agents to conduct legible actions so as to help others optimise their behaviors. In addition, we design a series of problem domains that emulate a common scenario and best characterize the legibility in multiagent reinforcement learning. The experimental results demonstrate that the new framework is more efficient and costs less training time compared to several multiagent reinforcement learning algorithms. The potential mechanisms of the spreading phenomena uncover the organizations and functions of various ***,due to the lack of valid data,most of early works are limited to the simulated process on model *** this paper,we track and analyze the propagation paths of real spreading events on two social networks:Twitter and *** empirical analysis reveals that the spreading probability and the spreading velocity present the explosive growth within a short period,where the spreading probability measures the transferring likelihood between two neighboring nodes,and the spreading velocity is the growth rate of the information in the whole ***,we observe the asynchronism between the spreading probability and the spreading *** explain the interesting and abnormal issue,we introduce the time-varying spreading probability into the susceptible-infected(SI)and linear threshold(LT)*** the analytic and experimental results reproduce the spreading phenomenon in real networks,which deepens our understandings of spreading problems.

Deep Learning for Camera Calibration and Beyond: A Survey

Camera calibration involves estimating camera parameters to infer geometric features from captured sequences, which is crucial for computer vision and robotics. However, conventional calibration is laborious and requires dedicated collection. Recent efforts show that learning-based solutions have the potential to be used in place of the repeatability works of manual calibrations. Among these solutions, various learning strategies, networks, geometric priors, and datasets have been investigated. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of learning-based camera calibration techniques, by analyzing their strengths and limitations. Our main calibration categories include the standard pinhole camera model, distortion camera model, cross-view model, and cross-sensor model, following the research trend and extended applications. As there is no unified benchmark in this community, we collect a holistic calibration dataset that can serve as a public platform to evaluate the generalization of existing methods. It comprises both synthetic and real-world data, with images and videos captured by different cameras in diverse scenes. Toward the end of this paper, we discuss the challenges and provide further research directions. To our knowledge, this is the first survey for the learning-based camera calibration (spanned 10 years). In this paper, a deep multi-kernel clustering network, named DMKCN, is proposed to learn a high-quality and structurally separable kernel representation for the clustering task. Specifically, a multi-kernel learner is proposed to choose a suitable kernel function by learning a suitable combination of kernel functions automatically. A kernel-aid encoder module, consisting of a series of multi-kernel learners, is proposed to learn the structurally separable kernel representation. Besides, a dual self-supervised mechanism, consisting of a kernel self-supervised strategy and a representation self-supervised strategy, is designed to uniformly optimize the kernel representation learning and structural partition. The kernel self-supervised strategy is developed to supervise the multi-kernel learners with the consideration of an objective of clustering task, the representation self-supervised strategy is developed to guide the optimization of kernel representation learning by reconstructing the raw data. Extensive experiments on six real-world datasets demonstrate the outstanding performance of our proposed DMKCN.

Autonomous systems use independent decisionmaking with only limited human intervention to accomplish goals in complex and unpredictable environments. As the autonomy technologies that underpin them continue to advance, these systems will find their way into an increasing number of applications in an ever wider range of settings. If we are to deploy them to perform safety-critical or mission-critical roles, it is imperative that we have justified confidence in their safe and correct operation. Verification is the process by which such confidence is established. However, autonomous systems pose challenges to existing verification practices. This paper highlights viewpoints of the Roadmap Working Group of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Technical Committee for Verification of Autonomous Systems, identifying these grand challenges, and providing a vision for future research efforts that will be needed to address them. © 2024, CC BY.

Graph Neural Networks for Joint Communication and Sensing Optimization in Vehicular Networks

In this paper, the problem of joint communication and sensing is studied in the context of terahertz (THz) vehicular networks. In the studied model, a set of service provider vehicles (SPVs) provide either communication service or sensing service to target vehicles, where it is essential to determine 1) the service mode (i.e., providing either communication or sensing service) for each SPV and 2) the subset of target vehicles that each SPV will serve. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem aiming to maximize the sum of the data rates of the communication target vehicles, while satisfying the sensing service requirements of the sensing target vehicles, by determining the service mode and the target vehicle association for each SPV. To solve this problem, a graph neural network (GNN) based algorithm with a heterogeneous graph representation is proposed. The proposed algorithm enables the central controller to extract each vehicle’s graph information related to its location, connection, and communication interference. Using this extracted graph information, a joint service mode selection and target vehicle association strategy is then determined to adapt to the dynamic vehicle topology with various vehicle types (e.g., target vehicles and service provider vehicles). Simulation results show that the proposed GNN-based scheme can achieve 93.66% of the sum rate achieved by the optimal solution, and yield up to 3.16% and 31.86% improvements in sum rate, respectively, over a homogeneous GNN-based algorithm and a conventional optimization algorithm without using GNNs. This study explores the effectiveness of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in automatically classifying skin cancer for e-health applications. The trained model showcases impressive performance by leveraging the HAM10000 dataset, which includes a wide range of skin lesion images from seven different classes. The parameters and architecture of the CNN model are presented in a systematic manner, providing valuable insights into the reasoning behind its design. The model is optimized using the Adam optimizer and annealing techniques to ensure efficient convergence. The model’s performance is assessed on validation and test datasets, showcasing an accuracy of 78.55% and 76.49%, respectively, for skin cancer classification. This study highlights the significant potential of CNN as a powerful tool for automating the diagnosis of skin cancer, which is in line with the growing trend of using deep learning for medical image analysis.
