Aeration was one of the common techniques which were focused in environmental engineering research. In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of aeration on nitrogen (N) fractions and its transformation in the sediment-water interface from urban lake. In addition, we measured the dehydrogenase (DHA) and Chla content in surface sediment to detect the changes of the microbial activity. The aim is to explore the regulation of N migration and transformation in the water-sediment interface during the treatment work of lake pollution. By mechanical aeration, we control the DO content of the overlying water at the range of 1.2-1.5 kg/L, 2.5-4.5 mg/L and 6.1-6.2 mg/L. Results showed that DO in overlying water play a role to the variation of N in water-sediment interface. NH4+-N was the mainly N fraction released from sediment, the lower DO concentration (1.2-1.5 mg/L) in overlying water is favorable to the release of NH4+-N from sediment. Whether under aerobic or anaerobic condition, the releasing of NH4+-N from sediment were both higher than its consumption in the overlying water. The benthic microbial activity of the surface sediment (0-2 cm) was higher than that from bottom (6-8 cm). And the microbial activity in surface sediment was in optimum range when the overlying water DO content was about 2.5-4.5 mg/L. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Selecting the community load coincidence factor reasonably is the premise for load accurate forecasting work of the power system and can effectively guide the smooth development of distribution network planning. Currently, selection of the community load coincidence factor is mainly relied on the planners and the relevant provisions of the electrical conduction, which is not combined with the practical, thus a community load coincidence factor selection method based on BP neural network is presented by the paper. Combining with the actual situation, the main factor influential factors of the community load coincidence factor are identified by the method, and a BP neural network model predicting the community load coincidence factor is established. The actual example results show that the prediction results proposed by the method are more systematic and scientific, and the absolute error can meet the requirements of the actual engineering's precision, the selection work of the community load coincidence factor can also be carried out scientifically and effectively by using the method.

Measurement of air exchange rates in different indoor environments using continuous CO_2 sensors

A new air exchange rate （AER） monitoring method using continuous CO2 sensors was developed and validated through both laboratory experiments and field studies. controlled laboratory simulation tests were conducted in a 1-m3 environmental chamber at different AERs （0.1-10.0 hr-1）. AERs were determined using the decay method based on box model assumptions. Field tests were conducted in classrooms, dormitories, meeting rooms and apartments during 2-5 weekdays using CO2 sensors coupled with data loggers. Indoor temperature, relative humidity （RH）, and CO2 concentrations were continuously monitored while outdoor parameters combined with on-site climate conditions were recorded. Statistical results indicated that good laboratory performance was achieved： duplicate precision was within 10%, and the measured AERs were 90%-120% of the real AERs. Average AERs were 1.22, 1.37, 1.10, 1.91 and 0.73 hr-l in dormitories, air-conditioned classrooms, classrooms with an air circulation cooling system, reading rooms, and meeting rooms, respectively. In an elderly particulate matter exposure study, all the homes had AER values ranging from 0.29 to 3.46 hr-1 in fall, and 0.12 to 1.39 hr-1 in winter with a median AER of 1.15.

Disinfection of E. Coli Using Visible-light-driven Photocatalyst

Ag/BiOI composites were synthesized by a solvothermal process and subsequent photodeposition method. The prepared Ag/BiOI photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) measurement. The experimental results showed that the photocatalytic disinfection efficiency of E. coli using visible-light-driven Ag/BiOI was almost 99.99%, and significantly higher than that of BiOI. The determination of of released K + further confirmed that the cell membranes of E. coli were ruptured in the photocatalytic disinfection.

The aim of this paper is to: (i) prepare AgI-BiOI composites by solvothermal methods, (ii) demonstrate the enhanced photocatalytic activity of AgI-BiOI composites compared to BiOI in the removal of AOII, (iii) provide the evidences for the efficient electron transfer between the interface of AgI and BiOI in studied system by measuring the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and (iv) determine the suitability of AgI-BiOI composites in real applications in term of its degradation efficiency and durability in the repeated uses. The experimental results indicated that the prepared AgI-BiOI powder was high purity and composed of nanoplates. The DRS results indicated that AgI-BiOI composites have the significant adsorption and the red-shift in the visible light region compared to BiOI. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of AOII using AgI-BiOI composites was more than 85% within 120 min, which was higher than that of individual AgI and BiOI. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was due to the decreased impedance value of AgI-BiOI, thus, leading to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of AgI-BiOI composites. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Characterization of contamination, source and degradation of petroleum between upland and paddy fields based on geochemical characteristics and phospholipid fatty acids

To evaluate contamination caused by petroleum, surface soil samples were collected from both upland and paddy fields along the irrigation canals in the Hunpu wastewater irrigation region in northeast China. N-alkanes, terpanes, steranes, and phospholipid fatty acids （PLFA） in the surface soil samples were analyzed. The aliphatic hydrocarbon concentration was highest in the samples obtained from the upland field near an operational oil well; it was lowest at I-3P where wastewater irrigation promoted the downward movement of hydrocarbons. The Hunpu region was found contaminated by heavy petroleum from oxic lacustrine fresh water or marine deltaic source rocks. Geochemical parameters also indicated significantly heavier contamination and degradation in the upland fields compared with the paddy fields. Principal component analysis based on PLFA showed various microbial communities between petroleum contaminated upland and paddy fields. Gram-negative bacteria indicated by 15：0, 3OH 12：0, and 16：1（9） were significantly higher in the paddy fields, whereas Gram-positive bacteria indicated by i16：0 and 18：1（9）c were significantly higher in the upland fields （p 〈 0.05）. These PLFAs were related to petroleum contamination. Poly-unsaturated PLFA （18：2ω6, 9; indicative of hydrocarbon- degrading bacteria and fungi） was also significantly elevated in the upland fields. This paper recommends more sensitive indicators of contamination and degradation of petroleum in soil. The results also provide guidelines on soil pollution control and remediation in the Hunpu region and other similar regions.

Effects of soil and water conservation and its interactions with soil properties on soil productivity

The effects of soil and water conservation （SWC） on soil properties are well documented. However, definitive and quantitative information of SWC and its interactions with soil properties on soil productivity is lacking for hilly red soil region of southern China. Experiments were conducted in the hilly red soil region of southern China for seven years in three rtmoffplots, each of which represented different SWC forest-grass measures. Principal component analysis and multiple regression techniques were used to relate the aboveground biomass （representing soil productivity） to soil properties. Based on the final regression equations, soil organic carbon content （Sot） is significantly correlated with soil productivity under the condition of forest-grass measures, whereas pH value and cation exchange capacity （Cee） are the main factors for soil productivity without SWC. Therefore, SWC plays an important role in sequestering Soc and improving soil productivity.
