This study investigates the effect of engine load condition on the injection spray, combustion, and exhaust emissions characteristics of a diesel-bioethanol blended fuel diesel engine. In this study, the injection characteristics, such as the effective flow diameter and the effective flow velocity, were calculated from the nozzle flow model. The macroscopic spray characteristics of diesel-bioethanol fuels were measured and analyzed using a spray visualization system. Using a four-cylinder test engine with 1.5 L of displacement, the combustion pressure, heat release, and emission characteristics were measured and analyzed. In addition, properties of blended fuel were measured and analyzed. This study revealed that the physical properties (density, viscosity, and surface tension) and chemical properties (cetane number, heating value, and distillation) of diesel-bioethanol blended fuels generally decreased with increased bioethanol content. The increase in bioethanol fuel resulted in easy vaporization at the same temperature condition. After energizing, the increase of engine load caused an increase in spray tip penetration. The spray cone angle was mainly affected by the blending of bioethanol, not the engine load. The increase of engine load led to a decrease of ignition delay by the high gas temperature, and it also caused an increase in the combustion duration for the same fuel amount. In the exhaust emissions, the increase of engine load affected the increase in both the NOx and ISNOx emissions, the decrease of CO and HC emissions. At a high engine load, CO and HC emissions were quite similar in D100, DE10, and DE20 fuels due to the increased oxygen content. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

HengTanghe River, which is a channel along the west coast of Taihu Lake, connects several inflow rivers into the lake. It has a certain distance away from the lake embankment. From June 2010 to May 2011, the water samples of Hengtanghe River were collected in Zhoutie town near the village of Yangxi, Yixing. The variation of river water quality was analyzed throughout the whole year. The results showed that: (1) the annual total nitrogen (TN) concentration was inferior to Class V water quality except August, while other indexes were superior to Class V water quality. (2) Dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) accounted for the main form in TN in the river, while TP was mainly in the form of particulate phosphorus (PP). Chemistry oxygen demand (COD Mn ) had a higher concentration during June and August compared to other months, and the maximum chlorophyll a (Chla) concentration was monitored in August. There were significantly higher COD Mn and Chla concentrations in the hot season than that in the cold season, while the TN concentration exhibited the opposite tendency with COD Mn and Chla. (3) There was a significant correlation among the water quality indexes except TP.

Due to the absence of sunlight, unexpected high nighttime OH concentrations reported in previous field studies are of high interest for in-depth understanding of trace gas removal and reaction kinetics. In summer 2006, within the framework of PRIDE-PRD2006 and CAREBEIJING2006, we performed intensive in-situ measurements for HOX radicals and ancillary parameters at two non-urban sites in Pearl River Delta and Beijing, respectively. During nighttime, similar features for both campaigns were observed. Radical concentration decreased in the afternoon to values of 3×106cm?3 (OH) and 5×108cm?3 (HO2) of sunset. After sunset, concentration decreased steadily even further reaching 0. 5×106cm?3 (OH) and 0. 2×108cm?3 (HO2) shortly before sunrise. Consequently, the averaged nighttime pollutant turnover rates by OH were as high as 8 ppb/h and 4 ppb/h for PRD and Beijing, respectively, dominating nighttime oxidation processes. A box model with the established chemical mechanism (RACM-MIM-GK) underestimated these observed OH concentrations by an order of magnitude while reproduced the observed HO2 concentrations taking into account the known interference from ambient RO2 radicals. By testing the recently proposed recycling mechanisms applied for daytime chemistry, we found both a small primary source and a secondary source of OH radicals were required additionally, of which the last one comparable to daytime observation. Interestingly, the widely applied Leuven Isoprene Mechanism showed marginal impacts on the modeled nighttime OH concentrations under high isoprene and low NO conditions. With the help of a simple one dimensional simulation, we found that direct input of ROx radicals by vertical transport was negligible while the input of PAN and MPAN could be of significance.

Six transition metal oxides were added in ceria-modified titania using a sol-gel method for catalytic oxidation of *** MnOx based catalyst was found to be the most active one,with which toluene could be decomposed completely at 200 *** greatest Mn/Ti and molar ratio of the mobile oxygen to the total oxygen concentration,together with a large surface area and a low reduction peak-starting temperature,would result in its best activity in toluene oxidation.

Mechanisms of ozonation, sono-ozonation and photo-ozonation for treating pesticide wastewater

TBA (tertiary butanol) was used as a radical scavenger to investigate the contributions of direct and indirect oxidation for treatment of pesticide wastewater by using ozonation (O3), sono-ozonation (US/O3) and photo-ozonation (UV/O3), respectively. Experimental results indicated that the proportions of the indirect oxidation induced by radicals in O3, US/O3 and UV/O3 were 33.12%, 60.17% and 50.0%, respectively. Initial pH of solution had an obvious effect on the ratio of indirect oxidation of O3. When pH was increased from 2.06 to 13.59, the ratio of indirect oxidation was enhanced from 4.47% to 33.12%. The influences of initial pH of solution on the ratios of indirect oxidation in US/O3 and UV/O3 were small. The ratios were added by 7~12 percentages when pH was adjusted from 2.06 to 13.59.

For waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), large quantities of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) are released into environment. In light of their characteristics including complex structures, high metals content and potential hazards, waste PCBs are regarded as the most difficult parts of WEEE to be recycled. Therefore in recent ten years, the issue has attracted much attention from researchers and enterprises. This article reviews the latest processes of waste PCBs developed from laboratories to pilot engineering applications, and presents the most suitable available technology for waste PCBs, typically categorized as manually dismantling and automatic approaches in developing and developed countries, respectively. Towards achieving the better sustainability and recyclability for waste PCBs, nonmetal powder and precious metals should be developed for a deep recovery following mechanical treatment. Additionally, a significant shift is emerging from dismantling for recycling of printed wiring boards, to disassembling for remanufacturing of electronic components, which will indicate that a new paradigm of reclaiming waste PCBs is shaping.

The recent patents and progress of electrodeionization (EDI) in fields of water deionization and wastewater treatment are reviewed in the present paper. The discussion focuses on such major aspects: applied ion exchange media, inner configuration and operation manner of the EDI, integrated membrane processes based on EDI and new applications of the technology. As the newest outstanding technology for water deep desalting, EDI has been widely used for ultrapure water production in many industries and laboratories together with important improvements in recent years. Durative advancements have been achieved by inventors such as more even current distribution, higher contact efficiency between water and ion exchanger, more effective precipitation preventing and lower energy consumption. Besides, some improvements also have been achieved in other new fields in addition to pure water production. The application in water softening, seawater desalination and wastewater treatment were introduced for example. It is believed that the electromembrane process of EDI will play an important role in water desalting, wastewater reclamation and cleaner production of chemical engineering near future. ©2011 Bentham Science Publishers.

On-road emission characteristics of "China IV" diesel bus

Two typical in-use diesel buses meeting "China IV" emission standard were selected to do on-road emission tests using a portable emission measurement system in Beijing. The road distance of testing was 51.3 km, the time of testing was 10 645 s, and 10 645 data groups were obtained of the buses. The running cycle in the testing can typically reflect the real on-road running cycle. The emission factors of the tested buses are (11.02±1.46), (1.44±0.12), (0.038±0.01), and (0.053±0.03) g/km for NOx, CO, total carbureted hydrogen (THC), and particulate matter (PM), respectively. Results show that fuel consumption and pollutant emission are strongly related to the speed and acceleration in the driving cycles. Higher pollutant emission rates and fuel consumption are tested during the high speed and acceleration zone in the driving cycles. Higher NOx emission rates are mainly during the high speed and acceleration zone. Higher CO emission rates are mainly during the vehicle speed exceeding 30 km/h or during the acceleration zone. Higher THC emission rates were mainly during acceleration zone while the vehicle speed was slower than 30 km/h.
