Microstructure and property evolution of nitrogen supersaturated (AlNbTiZr)Nx high-entropy ceramic films: Effect of nitrogen ratios

High entropy ceramic (AlNbTiZr)Nx films with different nitrogen contents were prepared by magnetron sputtering at different nitrogen ratios (Rn). The phase composition, microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties of the films were characterized. The results show that nitrogen saturates rapidly in the films and the nitrogen content of the films increases slightly with the increase of Rn. The films deposited at Rn = 0 exhibited an amorphous structure, while those deposited at Rn = 0.83–16.67 % demonstrated an FCC structure. The hardness and modulus of the films varied without a clear regularity with increasing the deposited Rn, where the highest values of 32.95 GPa and 468.67 GPa were measured at Rn = 3.33 %, respectively. All films exhibited adequate wear resistance in the friction tests, except the alloy films deposited at Rn = 0. In particular, the films deposited at Rn = 16.67 % demonstrated exceptional wear resistance, with a minimum wear rate of 8.95 × 10−8 mm3 N−1 mm−1. Regarding the compositions of the abrasive debris and oxide film, the wear debris and oxide film were found to consist of TiO2, Nb2O5, Al2O3, and ZrO2 for all of the films except for that deposited at Rn = 0. However, the film deposited at Rn = 0 was worn out. In addition, it is found that the wear mechanism of the (AlNbTiZr)Nx films is mainly abrasive wear, while the wear mechanism of the AlNbTiZr film is abrasive and adhesive wear. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

This paper proposes a novel online sparse least square support vector regression without bias for forecasting capacitive type pressure transducer remaining useful life prediction (RUL). The proposed approach is based on mechanism and statistical knowledge. The impedance variables are applied to calibrate the correlation between pressure capacitance capacity degradation and the resistance value to improve the prediction precision. Furthermore, a particle filter algorithm is proposed to estimate the pressure capacitance impedance fade parameters, and then the probability density function of the predicted RUL value is obtained by Gaussian. Lastly, experimental results consider #5 and #6. The pressure capacitance data set verifies the hybrid RUL prognostics strategy with high accuracy and robust stability. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

A multi-modal emotion recognition method based on facial multi-scale features and cross-modal attention (MS-FCA) network is proposed. The MSFCA model improves the traditional single-branch ViT network into a two-branch ViT architecture by using classification tokens in each branch to interact with picture embeddings in the other branch, which facilitates effective interactions between different scales of information. Subsequently, audio features are extracted using ResNet18 network. The cross-modal attention mechanism is used to obtain the weight matrices between different modal features, making full use of inter-modal correlation and effectively fusing visual and audio features for more accurate emotion recognition. Two datasets are used for the experiments: eNTERFACE'05 and REDVESS dataset. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed method on the eNTERFACE'05 and REDVESS datasets is 85.42% and 83.84% respectively, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) prediction is an instrumental means in elucidating the mechanisms underlying cellular operations, holding significant practical implications for the realms of pharmaceutical development and clinical treatment. Presently, the majority of research methods primarily concentrate on the analysis of amino acid sequences, while investigations predicated on protein structures remain in the nascent stages of exploration. Despite the emergence of several structure-based algorithms in recent years, these are still confronted with inherent challenges: (1) the extraction of intrinsic structural information of proteins typically necessitates the expenditure of substantial computational resources;(2) these models are overly reliant on seen protein data, struggling to effectively unearth interaction cues between unknown proteins. To further propel advancements in this domain, this paper introduces a novel PPI prediction method jointing masked reconstruction and contrastive learning, termed JmcPPI. This methodology dissects the PPI prediction task into two distinct phases: during the residue structure encoding phase, JmcPPI devises two feature reconstruction tasks and employs graph attention mechanism to capture structural information between residues;during the protein interaction inference phase, JmcPPI perturbs the original PPI graph and employs a multi-graph contrastive learning strategy to thoroughly mine extrinsic interaction information of novel proteins. Extensive experiments conducted on three widely utilized PPI datasets demonstrate that JmcPPI surpasses existing optimal baseline models across various data partition schemes. It has long posed a challenging task to optimally deploy multi-agent systems (MASs) to cooperatively coverage poriferous environments in real cooperative detection applications. In response to this challenge, this paper proposes a hierarchical coverage control (HCC) protocol for MASs to perform sector-based coverage operations. First, a distributed Voronoi partition-based sweep-and-assign protocol, combined with a sectorial partition method, is developed, enabling the segmentation of a whole poriferous region into multiple sectorial sub-subregions. Following this procedure, an extreme search scheme is developed to determine the optimal amount of agents for each subregion. After this allocation, a distributed controller is proposed to deploy the agents, considering non-holonomic constraints, into designated niche positions. Additionally, sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the asymptotical stability of the present HCC. The analytical challenge of the present study stems from the non-convex characteristics inherent in the loss function induced by porous environments. This non-convexity renders the task of globally optimizing the assignment of MASs intractable. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the present coverage control approach. © 2014 IEEE.

Co-exposure to ozone and polystyrene nanoplastic exacerbates cognitive impairment and anxiety-like behavior by regulating neuronal pyroptosis in mice

Ozone (O3) and nanoplastics (NPs) are pervasive environmental pollutants that frequently co-occur in our heavily industrialized era. While it has been documented that exposure to O3 or NPs individually has neurotoxic effects, studies investigating their combined impact and the hazardous mechanisms resulting from co-exposure are limited. In this study, we established a mouse model co-exposure to polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) and O3, focusing on the prefrontal cortex (PFC), a brain region crucial for cognition and emotion. We examined the effects of O3 and PS-NPs on behavioral changes related to learning, memory, and anxiety, employing transcriptome sequencing alongside molecular and histopathological methods. Our findings indicate that combined exposure to O3 and PS-NPs disrupts the integrity of the blood–brain barrier, reducing Claudin 5 expression and leading to increased accumulation of PS-NPs in the PFC. Transcriptome sequencing demonstrated the involvement of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) signaling pathway and oxidative stress in the pathological changes observed in the PFC. Through immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence analysis, we observed enhanced microglial activation, which correlates with increased production of inflammatory factors. Additionally, western blot and immunofluorescence co-labeling analyses revealed elevated expression levels of GSDMD-N, caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18 proteins, which are associated with neuronal pyroptosis. Finally, immunofluorescence co-labeling confirmed that the activation of the p38 MAPK pathway in neurons is involved in co-exposure-induced pyroptosis. Meanwhile, N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), a common antioxidant, can alleviate neuroinflammation and neuronal pyroptosis in the PFC, and it rescued the cognitive deficits and anxiety-like behaviors observed in the co-exposed mice. This paper develops a matrix-separation-based Lyapunov functional method to study the extended dissipativity analysis and synthesis issue of discrete-time Lur'e-type delayed systems. The advanced idea of matrix-separation is reflected in Lyapunov functional candidates and estimates summation terms as precisely as feasible. First, we introduce a novel summation inequality based on the matrix-separation method to provide a bound for the augmented summation that involves common state variables. An improved delay-product-type Lyapunov functional is devised by extending non-positive definite summations as separate subblocks of the state-augmented summation. Then, by using the matrix injection method to handle the cubic delay term in the functional forward difference, a delay-variation-dependent stability criterion and an extended dissipativity criterion are developed under the matrix-separation-based method. Subsequently, sufficient conditions for the control design of Lur'e-type systems are derived. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method are verified through its application to Chua's circuits, neural networks, and a stochastic numerical example. © 2025 The Author(s). A Facial Expression Emotion Recognition Based Human-robot Interaction System

A facial expression emotion recognition based human-robot interaction(FEER-HRI) system is proposed, for which a four-layer system framework is designed. The FEERHRI system enables the robots not only to recognize human emotions, but also to generate facial expression for adapting to human emotions. A facial emotion recognition method based on2D-Gabor, uniform local binary pattern(LBP) operator, and multiclass extreme learning machine(ELM) classifier is presented,which is applied to real-time facial expression recognition for robots. Facial expressions of robots are represented by simple cartoon symbols and displayed by a LED screen equipped in the robots, which can be easily understood by human. Four scenarios,i.e., guiding, entertainment, home service and scene simulation are performed in the human-robot interaction experiment, in which smooth communication is realized by facial expression recognition of humans and facial expression generation of robots within 2 seconds. As a few prospective applications, the FEERHRI system can be applied in home service, smart home, safe driving, and so on.

The electronic state modulation of catalytic active sites governs the oxidation/reduction activation pathway of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), however, directional singlet oxygen (1O2) generation via establishing electron-depleted active center remains challenging. Herein, we propose an innovative axial coordination strategy to engineer atomically dispersed Co-Nx moieties on MXene substrates, creating a CoSA-N2O1/MXene catalyst with precisely modulated electron-depleted sites. The tailored electronic configuration redirects 2,4-dichlorophenol degradation from radical-dominated pathway (CoSA-N4 counterpart without axial O modulation) to 1O2-driven mechanism with 90.5 % contribution, achieving up to 5.1-fold activity enhancement, even outperforming most state-of-the-art Fenton-like systems. The charge density redistribution and greater density of states near Fermi level accelerate PMS activation to selective generation of 1O2. It also demonstrates exceptional environment robustness and high stability for treating real lake water. Our findings advance atomic-level insights into PMS activation and establish a novel paradigm of axial coordination engineering for designing next-generation single-atom catalysts. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

We design for the first time a dual-core hollow core negative curvature fiber mode-selective coupler (HCNCF-MSC) in the 1 μm band. The designed HCNCF-MSC consists of two structures, and we have analyzed the performance of these two structures separately. The shortest device length of HCNCF-MSC-A is 3.2 cm, achieving a mode conversion efficiency higher than 75 % within the transmission wavelength range of 0.8–1.7 μm. HCNCF-MSC-B can achieve mode conversion under four different core diameters, with the shortest device lengths being 4.5 cm, 3.8 cm, 3.0 cm, and 2.4 cm, respectively, and it realizes a mode conversion efficiency greater than 80 % within the transmission wavelength range of 0.8–1.7 μm. © 2025 Elsevier GmbH
