Radial envelope forming mechanism and process design method for cylindrical rings with thin wall and high web ribs

Cylindrical rings with thin wall and high web ribs(CRTWHWR)are widely used as the key load bearing structures such as rocket body and space station cabin in aerospace ***,it is still difficult to efficiently manufacture CRTWHWR with high performance because of their extreme geometry with thin-walled skins,high web ribs and large *** this paper,a novel radial envelope forming process is put forward to efficiently achieve the plastic forming of CRTWHWR with high ***,the principle of radial envelope forming process is ***,an efficient design method for the tool motion and geometry is proposed based on the reverse envelope principle,i.e.,CRTWHWR is adopted to reversely envelope the tool and thus the tool which does not interfere with CRTWHWR can be efficiently obtained in a single ***,a reasonable 3D FE model of the radial envelope forming process of CRTWHWR is established and the radial envelope forming mechanism of CRTWHWR is comprehensively *** the FE simulation and experiments with material of plastic mud,a typical CRTWHWR with diameter of 300 mm,axial height of 192 mm,the maximum rib height of 25 mm,the minimum rib thickness of 3 mm and skin thickness of 5 mm is radial envelope formed,i.e.,the ratio of the maximum rib height to the minimum rib thickness reaches 8.33,the ratio of the maximum rib height to skin thickness reaches 5 and the ratio of diameter to the minimum rib thickness reaches *** above results verify that the proposed radial envelope forming process has great potentials in efficiently manufacturing CRTWHWR with extreme geometry.

Strength-plasticity matching regulation of cold rotary forged Al5A06 sheets by annealing treatment and its influence on fatigue property

Al7075 sheets are widely used in aerospace industry and their higher strength-plasticity collaborative improvement requirement is *** this study,the microstructure inheriting the evolution and me-chanical properties of Al7075 sheets during multidirectional rotary forging(MRF)and T6 heat treatment are *** results show that the average grain size exhibits near-parabolic evolution with increas-ing MRF deformation ***20％+T6(20％MRF deformation amount+T6)condition possesses the largest grain size of 72.6 μm,and its abnormal grain growth mechanism is that the medium deformation energy and high deformation heterogeneity in MRF20％deformed grains could cause asynchronous re-crystallization behavior during T6 heat treatment,and the grains with comparatively higher deformation energy get recrystallized firstly and devour adjacent grains along preferred<011>or(223>misorientation ***70％+T6 condition possesses the finest grain size of 14.2 μm,and its fine grain inheriting mech-anism is that the uniformly high deformation energy in MRF70％deformed grains causes uniformly rapid recrystallization,and rapidly recrystallized grains effectively suppress grain boundary motion from adja-cent *** increasing MRF deformation amount,tensile strength and elongation values both exhibit near-antiparabolic ***70％+T6 condition possesses the largest tensile strength(563 MPa)and elongation(17.73％),which increases by 8.27％and 80.55％compared to as-annealed+T6(MRF0％+T6)condition(tensile strength is 520 MPa and elongation is 9.82％),*** strength-plasticity col-laborative improvement is mainly because the combination of effectively inherited fine grains,refined inclusion particles,and uniformly distributed fine η'particles after T6 heat treatment could promote smooth dislocation movement and coordinated slip behavior in most matrix grains,which contributes to the delay of stress localization and strength-plasticity collaborative improvement.

Zigzag line is a common defect in friction stir welding(FSW) *** formation mechanism of the zigzag line in Al-Cu alloy FSW joint and its influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties during post weld heat treatment(PWHT) were studied by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),microhardness and tensile *** is found that the occurrence of zigzag line for PWHT joint is determined by PWHT process which in nature depends on residual stress and thermal stress of FSW *** optimization of PWHT process to reduce the residual and thermal stress can trigger for the deterioration of mechanical properties of PWHT joints with zigzag *** obvious decrease of tensile properties is observed for T6-450 and T6-495 joints although zigzag line appears in the *** determines the sizes of zigzag line cracks and consequently determines the fracture location and characteristics of FSW joint.

Failure Mechanisms and Structural Optimization of Shredder Hammer for Metal Scraps

Recycling retired cars can relieve the environmental pollution and resource waste ***,a few publications can be found on the failure mechanisms and optimization method of recycling equipment,***,the failure mechanisms and structural optimization of shredder hammers for retired cars are studied aiming improving shredding efficiency and reducing *** types of shredder hammer are studied theoretically,and it is found that wear failure and fatigue failure are the two main failure types of shredder *** shredding process of metal scraps is analyzed by finite element method,and it can be divided into four stages based on the stress states：initial stage,collision stage,grinding stage and separation *** is proved that the shredding efficiency can be improved by increasing cutouts on the hammer ***,it is determined that the hammer with two cutouts is the optimal structure for metal scraps,which can improve the shredding efficiency by 20% and lengthen the hammer life by 15%.This study provides scientific basis for the industry application and theoretical foundation for further research.

Microstructural evolution of GCr15 steel during austenitizing and quenching considering C and Cr content

Microstructural evolution of GCr15 steels with different C and Cr contents during austenitizing and quenching was studied. Thermodynamic analysis of cementite dissolution was implied to obtain the critical temperature. The coordination number x in Fe_xCr_(3-x)C and the volume fraction of undissolved cementite were computed according to element conservation and equilibrium phase diagram. The M_S(martensite transformation temperature) was calculated by using empirical formula. The retained austenite content was calculated with further consideration of quenching temperature. The results showed that the coordination number and the undissolved cementite content were promoted by the austenitizing temperature and carbon content of the steel. Increasing Cr element reduced the coordination ***15 steels with different components had nearly the same M_S when austenitization at 830 °C to 860 °C. The interaction of C and Cr complicated the evolution of M_S and retained austenite content. The results were in good agreement with the literature, which could guide to obtain specified retained austenite and/or carbides.

Effect of key factors on cold orbital forging of a spur bevel gear

Cold orbital forging is an advanced spur bevel gear forming technology. Generally, the spur bevel gear in the cold orbital forging process is formed by two steps: the preforming step and the final step. Due to the great importance of the final step to gear forming and its complication with interactive factors, this work aims at examining the influence of key factors on the final step in cold orbital forging of a spur bevel gear. Using the finite element(FE) method and control variate method, the influence rules of four key factors, rotation velocity of the upper tool, n, feeding velocity of the lower tool, v, tilted angle of the upper tool, γ, friction factor between the tools and the billet, m, on the geometry and the deformation inhomogeneity of the cold orbital forged gear are thoroughly clarified. The research results show that the flash becomes more homogeneous with increasing v, increasing m, decreasing n or decreasing γ. And the deformation of the gear becomes more homogeneous with increasing v, decreasing n or decreasing γ. Finally, a corresponding experiment is conducted, which verifies the accuracy of FE simulation conclusions.

Effect of Prior Cold Deformation on the Stability of Retained Austenite in GCr15 Bearing Steel

In this work, the effect of prior cold deformation on the stability of retained austenite in GCr15 bearing steel was investigated after quenching and tempering treatment. The thermal stability was evaluated by calculating thermal activation energy for decomposition of retained austenite using differential scanning calorimeter. The mechanical stability was investigated according to the strain-induced martensitic transformation behavior of retained austenite under the standard compression testing. It is found that the prior cold deformation not only accelerates the carbide dissolution during the austenitization process but also contributes to the carbon partitioning in the tempering stage due to the higher density of phase boundaries, which results in the improvement of the thermal stability of retained austenite. Due to the enhanced carbide dissolution, the higher carbon content in the prior austenite will intensify the isotropic strain of martensitic transformation. As a consequence, the film-like retained austenite is likely to form under a higher hydrostatic pressure and thus shows a higher mechanical stability. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the benefits of the prior cold deformation to the stability of retained austenite would be saturated when the cold deformation degree is larger than 40%.

Cold start performance analysis of PEMFC with different assisted heating strategies

Large-scale use of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is restricted by the challenge of cold start. A three-dimensional, transient, multiphase flow cold-start model is established to investigate the effects of different assisted heating strategies. The variations of ice volume fraction and temperature distribution of catalyst layer and their influences on cold start performance of PEMFC are discussed in detail, under coolant-assisted heating strategy, air-assisted heating strategy and the combination of two strategies at −20 °C. The results show that coolant-assisted heating strategy has significant effect on the cold start performance. There is an appropriate coolant flow velocity and heating power to balance cold start performance and energy consumption. Air-assisted heating strategy has minimal improvement on the cold start performance. Moreover, an interesting point is that on the basis of coolant-assisted heating adoption, the heat brought by the air-assisted heating although not much but can effectively improve water storage capacity of the ionomer. This makes the combination of two strategies has more excellent cold start performance, namely, catalyst layer's ice volume fraction decreases by 7.7 % and cold start time shortens by 2 s, compared to coolant-assisted heating, which provides valuable information for practical cold start strategy design of PEMFC.
