Under near-fault pulse-like ground motions, potential pounding may occur at the isolation level between the base-isolated building and its surrounding retaining walls. In this paper, the effect of pounding on the dynamic responses of base-isolated buildings is explored by using the modified Kelvin impact model and taking the inelasticity of the superstructure into account. It is shown from numerical results that floor accelerations at the time of pounding is substantially higher than those of the building without base-isolation, and the displacement time history of the drift at the ground floor takes the staircase-like form due to the presence of high spikes in the pounding force and the significant residual inter-story deformation. This indicates that higher ductility should be imposed on lower floors of the superstructure with base-isolation than the building without base-isolation, otherwise, the global collapse of the superstructure may be induced. Higher modes of vibration are excited during the pounding, which results in larger inter-story drifts.

The basis theory and hypothesis of finite element method (FEM) computing for steel bridges deck surfacing were proposed. According to the general parameters of steel-box joist deck and surfacing structure of long-span steel bridges in China, the relations between each mechanical index and the elastic modulus of asphalt mixture surfacing materials and the most disadvantaged loading position were analyzed, the most dangerous points were also confirmed which were used as control targets in structure design. In the way, the early damage of the deck surfacing could be controlled.

The simulative analysis with the Mohr-Coulomb model of FLAC3D program is carried out based on the development of deformation for foundation pits of a high-rise building in Beijing. Comparing with the results of the in-situ monitoring, the deformation, collapse and support for the foundation pits are discussed. It can be shown that the Mohr-Coulomb model of the FLAC3D program can be used to simulate the foundation excavation and the collapse and the slope support very conveniently and accurately. The results obtained are safe and reliable. The FLAC3D program can be widely used in the simulation of foundation pits.

The dynamic test of two full-prestressed concrete beams was carried out. The test results indicate that frequencies of those beams grow in step with the prestressing force. It's opposite to the analysis of dynamic characteristic of isotropic material beams subjected to axial compressive force. There are many factors for this result. This paper discusses the change of the elastic modulus results in the stiffness change, which then changes the frequencies. A modified formula was proposed, and the comparison of calculation results was taken. The results indicate that the method of this paper has a good applicability, the experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis.

A set of self-developed apparatus for foundation physical model were utilized to conduct model tests of the multi-element composite foundation with a steel pipe pile and several gravel piles. Some load-bearing characteristics of the multi-element composite foundation, including the curves of foundation settlement, stresses of piles, pile-soil stress ratio, and load-sharing ratio of piles and soil, were obtained to study its working performances in silty sand soil. The experimental results revealed that the multi-element composite foundation with steel pipe pile and gravel pile contributed more than the gravel pile composite foundation in improving the bearing capacity of the silty fine sand.

An inter-story shear model of asymmetric base-isolated structures incorporating deformation of each isolation bearing was built, and a method to simultaneously simulate bi-directional near-fault and far-field ground motions was proposed. A comparative study on the dynamic responses of asymmetric base-isolated structures under near-fault and far-field ground motions were conducted to investigate the effects of eccentricity in the isolation system and in the superstructures, the ratio of the uncoupled torsional to lateral frequency of the superstructure and the pulse period of near-fault ground motions on the nonlinear seismic response of asymmetric base-isolated structures. Numerical results show that eccentricity in the isolation system makes asymmetric base-isolated structure more sensitive to near-fault ground motions, and the pulse period of near-fault ground motions plays an import role in governing the seismic responses of asymmetric base-isolated structures.

Based on plastic yield line theory the failure model of horizontal restrained rectangular slab was given. By applying principle of virtual work, the formula of horizontal restrained rectangular slab for calculation of limit bearing capacity was derived. The average compression zone height needed to be determined. By nonlinear regression of the results with MATLAB, the formula of compression zone depth could be obtained. Comparative analysis showed that the formula was in good agreement with experimental values.
