Poisoning as a Post-Protection: Mitigating Membership Privacy Leakage From Gradient and Prediction of Federated Models

Federated learning (FL) is a distributed learning paradigm that enables multiple clients to train a unified model without sharing their private data. However, recent works demonstrate that FL models are vulnerable to membership inference attacks (MIAs), which can infer whether a data sample was used to train a given FL model. Existing countermeasures either require far-reaching modifications of FL training process or enforce extra processing in prediction phase, yielding them unlikely to be applied well in practice. In this paper, we design a post-protection mechanism, dubbed P2-Protection, which degrades the inference performance of MIAs by simultaneously poisoning the prediction and gradient of the target FL model to reduce the privacy leakage of training data while keeping the model prediction accuracy. P2-Protection only involves one additional training round to embed the poisoned prediction and gradient into the target FL model, without requiring model retraining or training process modification. We evaluate P2-Protection and compare it with two state-of-the-art defenses against three MIAs on five realistic datasets. Experimental results show that P2-Protection outperforms the existing defenses by offering limited implement overhead and improved utility-privacy trade-off. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Provably Secure and Efficient One-to-Many Authentication and key Agreement Protocol for Resource-Asymmetric Smart Environments

The smart environment is a crucial application of the Internet of Things(IoT). Due to its growing security and efficiency needs, recent years have seen the proposal of numerous authentication and key agreement (AKA) protocols. Unfortunately, most of existing AKA protocols only support one-to-one AKA and rely on the elliptic curve cryptosystem, resulting in huge overhead. In addition, these protocols fail to consider the resource-asymmetric characteristics of this scenario. That is, the resources on the gateway side are abundant, while the resources on user sides and device sides are limited. In order to achieve efficient and secure one-to-many AKA establishment in this scenario, where one-to-many means that users can realize key agreements with multiple smart devices at the same time. For the first time, this paper uses the one-to-many computing structure of the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT) to design an efficient one-to-many AKA establishment, which is perfectly adapted to resource-asymmetric allocation in smart environments. Compared with existing solutions, this solution has the following advantages. Firstly, our protocol is suitable for resource-asymmetric environments, where the gateway acts as an intermediate node and uses rich resources to integrate multiple AKA requests. Secondly, the solution supports users to negotiate session keys with multiple smart devices at the same time. Thirdly, we prove the protocol’s security under the Real-or-Random (ROR) model. In addition, we perform formal security verification of the protocol using the Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications(AVISPA) tool. Finally, the security and efficiency of this solution are superior to similar solutions. Specifically, our solution can meet 18 security and functionality requirements. SONICUMOS is an enhanced behavior-based face liveness detection system that combines ultrasonic and video signals to sense the 3D head gestures. As face authentication becomes increasingly prevalent, the need for a reliable liveness detection system is paramount. Traditional behavior-based liveness detection methods (e.g., eye-blinking, nodding, etc.), which are widely deployed in mission-critical scenarios like finance and banking applications today, are prone to advanced media-based facial forgery attacks. SONICUMOS aims to incorporate the traditional behaviorbased method for active liveness detection without introducing extra user burden. By employing ultrasonic signals, SONICUMOS capitalizes on the head gestures, significantly raising the security bar. Our approach utilizes the frequency-modulated continuouswave (FMCW) ultrasonic radar for robust 3D gesture recognition compatible with face authentication. We also propose a new dual-feature fusion network that integrates audio and video features at the feature level to increase detection accuracy and resilience against numerous attacks. Our prototype has been tested on seven off-the-shelf Android/iOS smartphones, achieving an overall detection accuracy of 95.83% at an equal error rate (EER) of 4.96% when dealing with 3D impersonation attacks © 2025 IEEE.

Splitting Method for Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations

This paper investigates the two-dimensional stochastic steady-state Navier-Stokes(NS) equations with additive random noise. We introduce an innovative splitting method that decomposes the stochastic NS equations into a deterministic NS component and a stochastic equation. We rigorously analyze the proposed splitting method from the perspectives of equivalence, stability, existence and uniqueness of the solution. We also propose a modified splitting scheme, which simplified the stochastic equation by omitting its nonlinear terms. A detailed analysis of the solution properties for this modified approach is provided. Additionally, we discuss the statistical errors with both the original splitting format and the modified scheme. Our theoretical and numerical studies demonstrate that the equivalent splitting scheme exhibits significantly enhanced stability compared to the original stochastic NS equations, enabling more effective handling of nonlinear characteristics. Several numerical experiments were performed to compare the statistical errors of the splitting method and the modified splitting method. Notably, the deterministic NS equation in the splitting method does not require repeated solving, and the stochastic equation in the modified scheme is free of nonlinear terms. These features make the modified splitting method particularly advantageous for large-scale computations, as it significantly improves computational efficiency without compromising accuracy. Processing high-dimensional data cubes and developing high-performance classifiers are core objectives in the field of hyperspectral image classification (HSIC). Superpixel-based methods are widely used in HSIC due to their efficacy in reducing redundant information and enhancing local features. However, imprecise segmentation, especially in complex structures and textures of hyperspectral images (HSIs), may lead to inconsistencies in the regions extracted by superpixels and the boundaries between different ground objects. Such inconsistencies significantly degrade the classification performance of HSIs. Alternatively, when parameter settings are inaccurate, edge-aware feature extraction methods often introduce sharpening artifacts at the image boundaries, resulting in a decrease in classification accuracy. To effectively address these challenges, we propose a novel probabilistic fusion method for HSIC. This method consists of the following stages. First, spatial information is extracted by a multiscale superpixel segmentation method and then probabilistically optimized by the extended random walk (ERW) method. Next, semantic-aware structural features (S2Fs) are extracted along with edge information of different objects. Lastly, a probabilistic framework is proposed to fuse the class probabilities of superpixel-based spatial information and semantic-aware structural features. Experimental results on three real datasets show state-of-the-art classification performance, even with limited training sets. ©1991-2012 IEEE.

Diffusion models have indeed shown great promise in solving inverse problems in image processing. In this paper, we propose a novel, problem-agnostic diffusion model called the maximum a posteriori (MAP)-based guided term estimation method for inverse problems. To leverage unconditionally pretrained diffusion models to address conditional generation tasks, we divide the conditional score function into two terms according to Bayes’ rule: an unconditional score function (approximated by a pretrained score network) and a guided term, which is estimated using a novel MAP-based method that incorporates a Gaussian-type prior of natural images. This innovation allows us to better capture the intrinsic properties of the data, leading to improved performance. Numerical results demonstrate that our method preserves contents more effectively compared to state-of-the-art methods—for example, maintaining the structure of glasses in super-resolution tasks and producing more coherent results in the neighborhood of masked regions during inpainting. We establish the global existence of small-amplitude solutions near a global Maxwellian to the Cauchy problem of the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system for non-cutoff soft potentials with weak angular singularity. This extends the work of Duan et al.(2013), in which the case of strong angular singularity is considered, to the case of weak angular singularity.

This paper presents an interactive motion control method based on reinforcement learning, designed to assist children with autism who have social motor impairments through a mirror game intervention. The virtual teacher uses the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithm to optimize its actions, guiding the participant to follow a Lissajous trajectory. To ensure safety, a motion-correction mechanism was developed, which automatically adjusts actions when the predicted trajectory surpasses predefined safety boundaries. The reward function considers both the distance between the virtual teacher and the target trajectory, as well as the distance between the virtual teacher and the participant, with dynamic adjustments applied by the motion-correction mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that the virtual teacher effectively guides the participant towards the target trajectory while adhering to safety constraints.
