Fingerprint of the Interbond Electron Hopping in Second-Order Harmonic Generation

We experimentally explore the fingerprint of the microscopic electron dynamics in second-order harmonic generation (SHG). It is shown that the interbond electron hopping induces a novel source of nonlinear polarization and plays an important role even when the driving laser intensity is 2 orders of magnitude lower than the characteristic atomic field. Our model predicts anomalous anisotropic structures of the SHG yield contributed by the interbond electron hopping, which is identified in our experiments with ZnO crystals. Moreover, a generalized second-order susceptibility with an explicit form is proposed, which provides a unified description in both the weak and strong field regimes. Our work reveals the nonlinear responses of materials at the electron scale and extends the nonlinear optics to a previously unexplored regime, where the nonlinearity related to the interbond electron hopping becomes dominant. It paves the way for realizing controllable nonlinearity on an ultrafast time scale.

Broad-Spectrum Light Absorption and Efficient Charge Transfer in Plasmonic Pbs/Cu2-Xs/Cds Polyhedral Heterojunction for Improved Photothermal/Photocatalytic Performance

The multidimensional structure, abilities of light-harvesting and charge-transfer, photothermal conversion of semiconductor heterojunction are very important characters for high-performance photocatalysis. However, it remains a challenge to rationally design heterojunction photocatalyst that meets the demand. Herein, plasmonic PbS/Cu2-xS/CdS polyhedral heterojunctions, which Cu2-xS and CdS nanoparticles are deposited on the 24-faceted PbS, are prepared for efficient photothermal-assisted photocatalysis for the first time. Owing to the synergistic effect of plasmonic resonance and bandgap excitations, the ternary hybrids display excellent light absorption ranging from ultraviolet to near-infrared (NIR) region. The unique polyhedral structure and rough surface of the hybrids generate a large surface area, offering abundant active sites for catalytic reaction. Importantly, the different work functions and appropriate band arrangements of the three semiconductors provide a double Z-scheme band structure, which leads to efficient charge transfer and separation driven by built-in electric fields. Moreover, the fast hot electron injection from plasmonic Cu2-xS to PbS and CdS also provides energetic electrons for photocatalysis. As a result, the polyhedral hybrids display efficient photocatalytic H2 activity (24.3 times of pure CdS) under visible light irradiation and a high apparent quantum efficiency under NIR light irradiation. Furthermore, the ternary hybrids show excellent photothermal conversion and photothermal-assisted photocatalysis due to plasmonic heating and nonradiative relaxation. The temperature-dependent photocatalytic tests indicate that the photothermal effect has about 35% enhancement on photocatalysis. This work provides an inspiration to develop new functional materials for the field of solar-driven energy conversion. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

High harmonic generation (HHG) from gas phase atoms (or molecules) has opened up a new frontier in ultrafast optics, where attosecond time resolution and Angstrom spatial resolution are accessible. The fundamental physical pictures of HHG is always explained by the laser-induced recollision of particle-like electron motion, which lay the foundation of attosecond spectroscopy. In recent years, HHG has also been observed in solids. One can expect the extension of attosecond spectroscopy to the condensed matter if a description capable of resolving ultrafast dynamics is provided. Thus, a large number of theoretical studies have been proposed to understand the underlying physics of HHG. Here, we revisit the recollision picture in solid HHG and show some challenges of current methods with particle perspective, and present the recently developed wave perspective Huygens-Fresnel picture in understanding dynamical systems within the ambit of strong-field physics. © 2023, CC BY.

Resonance-induced ionization enhancement and suppression of circular states of the hydrogen atom in strong laser fields

We theoretically investigated the ionization dynamics of a hydrogen atom in circular excited states irradiated by the circularly polarized laser pulses by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We calculated the ionization yields of the two excited states which are corotating and counter-rotating with respect to the laser fields as a function of the laser frequency. For the corotating excited state, our results show an obvious ionization suppression when the laser frequency is beyond the one-photon ionization threshold, and it is followed by a strong ionization enhancement when the laser frequency further increases. These ionization suppressions and enhancements are absent for the counter-rotating excited state. By tracing the ionization process, we found that resonance between the initial state and a lower-energy state occurs at the frequency of the ionization enhancement. Ionization from this lower-energy state is responsible for this ionization enhancement. At the frequency of ionization suppression, Rabi oscillation between the initial and the lower-energy state occurs, which prevents further ionization and thus suppresses the final ionization yield.

Catalogue of topological electrons and phonons in all allotropes of carbon

Carbon, as one of the most common element in the earth, constructs hundreds of allotropic phases to present rich physical nature. In this work, by combining the ab inito calculations and symmetry analyses method, we systematically study a large number of allotropes of carbon (703), and discovered 315 ideal topological phononic materials and 32 topological electronic materials. The ideal topological phononic nature includes single, charge-two, three, four Weyl phonons, the Dirac or Weyl nodal lines phonons, and nodal surfaces phonons. And the topological electron nature includes topological insulator, (Type-II) Dirac points, triple nodal points, the Dirac (Weyl) nodal lines, quadratic nodal lines and so on. For convenience, we take the uni in SG 178 and pbg in SG 230 as the examples to describe the topological features in the main. We find that it is the coexistence of single pair Weyl phonons and one-nodal surfaces phonons in the uni in SG 178, which can form the single surface arc in the (100) surface BZ and isolated double-helix surface states (IDHSSs)in the (110) surface BZ. In topological semimetal pbg in SG 230, we find that the perfect triple degenerate nodal point can be found in the near Fermi level, and it can form the clear surface states in the (001) and (110) surface BZ. Our work not only greatly expands the topological features in all allotropes of carbon, but also provide many ideal platforms to study the topological electrons and phonons. © 2023, CC BY.

It is thought that schemes for quantum imaging are fragile against realistic environments in which the background noise is often stronger than the nonclassical signal of the imaging photons. Unfortunately, it is unfeasible to produce brighter quantum light sources to alleviate this problem. Here, we overcome this paradigmatic limitation by developing a quantum imaging scheme that relies on the use of natural sources of light. This is achieved by performing conditional detection on the photon number of the thermal light field scattered by a remote object. Specifically, the conditional measurements in our scheme enable us to extract quantum features of the detected thermal photons to produce quantum images with improved signal-to-noise ratios. This technique shows a remarkable exponential enhancement in the contrast of quantum images. Surprisingly, this measurement scheme enables the possibility of producing images from the vacuum fluctuations of the light field. This is experimentally demonstrated through the implementation of a single-pixel camera with photon-number-resolving capabilities. As such, we believe that our scheme opens a new paradigm in the field of quantum imaging. It also unveils the potential of combining natural light sources with nonclassical detection schemes for the development of robust quantum technologies. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The coupling relationship between the web tension and velocity in unwinding system is an important factor which affects system dynamic performance,how to realize independently control between tension and velocity with time-varying radius is an inevitable *** coupling model of the web tension and velocity is established in this paper,and the diagonal matrix decoupling compensator is designed to separate the coupling *** optimize the dynamic performance of the unwinding system decoupled,a hybrid sensitivity robust controller is applied to improve the disturbance rejection performance and stability under *** simulation results show that the robust decoupling control strategy can effectively reduce the coupling degree of tension and velocity,and improve the robustness of the unwinding system.

A new hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite(HOIP)material,[C6H14N2]KBr3,has been synthesized via hydrothermal method and fully characterized.[C6H14N2]KBr3 has a three-dimensional perovskite structure and crystalizes in a trigonal P3121 space *** elastic properties of[C6H14N2]KBr3 were fully calculated via the density functional theory calculations,which reveal the elastic moduli(11.54~14.07 GPa),shear moduli(4.56~5.68 GPa),Poisson’s ratios(0.18~0.32),bulk modulus(8.51 GPa)and acoustic velocity(2.57~2.74 kms^-1).Additional nanoindentation experiments in the form of single-crystals confirmed the validity of our theoretical approach.[C6H14N2]KBr3 exhibits higher stiffness and thermal stability than the well-known photovoltaic CH3NH3PbI3,which makes it worthwhile for exploring optoelectronic properties.

Cutoff extension of high harmonics via resonant electron injection channels

We investigate the manipulation of electron dynamics in high-order harmonic generation from semiconductor via resonant electron injection channels, which are formed by adding ultraviolet light to the midinfrared driving laser. In the presence of these channels, valence electrons far from the top of the valence band can be first preaccelerated to the channels and then effectively injected into the conduction band, leading to a dramatic extension of the cutoff of high harmonics even with a small vector potential of the driving field. The role of the channels in the electron dynamics is unambiguously demonstrated from the time-frequency analysis and time-dependent population imaging. By adjusting the frequency of the ultraviolet field, the harmonic cutoff can be tuned in a wide range. Besides, as compared to trivial semiconductors, one can achieve the cutoff extension with a lower frequency of the ultraviolet light for topological semiconductors owing to the emergences of extra energy levels in the middle of the band gap.
