Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling is a vital vitreoretinal surgery procedure. However, due to the thickness of just 1-2 micrometers and the intricacies associated with its varying density and adhesion, the difficulty of manipulation exceeds the physiological limits of human perception and operation. Surgical robot is characterized by high precision and stability. However, navigating intricate intraocular environments and handling minuscule high-precision areas remain enormous challenges. These include issues of uneven lighting, field-of-view loss, and motion blur. This paper proposed a perception method named ‘Multimodal Surgical Process Recognition based on Domain Knowledge and Segmentation (MSPR-DKS),’ designed to address these challenges and provide input for the precise control of robots. Moreover, a comprehensive dataset focused on ILM peeling during macular hole surgeries was established. Experimental results underscore the efficacy of this approach, with segmentation accuracies exceeding 99.27% for instruments and macular holes and an average accuracy of 98.97% in recognizing surgical processes. This study paves the way for leveraging domain knowledge and image segmentation to improve robot-assisted manipulation of soft tissues in ophthalmology.

With the development of industrialized building and intelligence technology, it becomes necessary and possible to realize building process intelligence management. In recent years, digital twins and parallel management get more and more attentions in academic research and industrial applications. This paper addresses how parallel building system performs intelligence management on industrialized building process. Firstly, actual building model and artificial building model are created according to actual building system. Then business driving engine and simulation engine drive actual building model and artificial building model, respectively. Participants receive and send messages by software interfaces. Business driving engine changes the status of actual building model and sends the changes to simulation engine. Simulation engine updates the status of artificial building model and runs artificial building model with various parameters. Then it sends the parameter with the best effect to business driving engine. Business driving engine sends recommendations to participants according to the best parameter. Thus, building process intelligence management is achieved. © 2021 IEEE

It is important for the dulcimer robot to obtain the spatial coordinates of the dulcimer phonemes. However, the traditional manual positioning method is both inefficient and does not meet the intelligence requirements of modern robot. A visual positioning method based on improved Roberts operator is proposed in this paper on account of solving these problems, which can obtain the 3D coordinates of the dulcimer keys in a short time. First, an improved Roberts edge detection operator is designed, which fully detects the edge information of the target by transforming the scale. Further, this paper proposes a dulcimer keys positioning method by fusing RGB and depth image information. This method has a better positioning effect for dulcimer keys with complex background and small size. The experimental results show that the visual positioning method proposed in this paper can effectively identify and locate the dulcimer keys, and it has better robustness to the lighting environment.

In order to meet the operational needs in some narrow environments, the hyper-redundant snake-shaped manipulator has received extensive attention and has been widely studied due to its compact shape and multiple degrees of freedom. At present, the research of hyper-redundant manipulator mainly focuses on the straight push platform. Considering the limitation of working space, this paper designed a hyper-redundant manipulator delivered by a curled turntable. According to the characteristics of turntable delivery, a tip-following algorithm based on curve fitting and a tip-following strategy based on terminal posture record are proposed. Finally, with the algorithm applied to the physical robot we made, we successfully realized the tip-following motion control of the hyper-redundant manipulator.

Recently, convolutional neural network has been pervasively adopted in visual object tracking for its potential in discriminating the target from the surrounding background. Most of the visual object trackers extract deep features from a specific layer, generally from the last convolutional layer. However, these trackers are less effective, especially when the target undergoes drastic appearance variations caused by the presence of different challenging situations, such as occlusion, illumination change, background clutter and so on. In this research paper, a novel tracking algorithm is developed by introducing an elastic net constraint and a contextual information into the convolutional network to successfully track the desired target throughout a video sequence. Hierarchical features are extracted from the shallow and the deep convolutional layers to further improve the tracking accuracy and robustness. As the deep convolutional layers capture important semantic information, they are more robust to the target appearance variations. As for the shallow convolutional layers, they encode significant spatial details, which are more accurate to precisely localize the desired target. Moreover, Peak–Strength Context–Aware correlation filters are embedded to each convolutional layer output that produce multi–level convolutional response maps to collaboratively identify the estimated position of the target in a coarse–to–fine manner. Quantitative and qualitative experiments are performed on the widely used benchmark, the OTB–2015 dataset that shows impressive results compared to the state–of–the–art trackers.

The federated ecology provides a new paradigm for breaking the isolated data island problem and fully activating the potential of big data and artificial intelligence, especially in multi-client collaboration tasks. Participant selection strategy in multi-client collaboration is the main limitation for increasing the convergence speed and lowing the communication costs. However, in the face of the unbalanced and non-IID data distributions, the performance of federated optimization algorithms will also decrease. To solve the above problems, we propose an adaptive federated control strategy for participant selection in multi-client collaboration based on the Mann-Kendall test, named FedMK. By adaptively selecting weak participants for training rather than random selection, FedMK can speed up model convergence and reduce communication costs. Experiment results show that our method outperforms the baseline method in non-IID scenarios, and the number of communication rounds on CIFAR-10 and synthetic datasets reduced by more than 15% and 10 %, 9 respectively. © 2021 IEEE.

Parallel Manufacturing is a new manufacturing paradigm in industry, deeply integrating informalization, automation, and artificial intelligence. In this paper we propose a new mechanical design paradigm in Parallel Manufacturing based on ACP method. The key is to regard the design procedure based on artificial design and emulation method as two independent procedures, which can be modeled as a parallel system. The design procedure based on ACP method does not include a real system, which is an inventive extension of the traditional parallel system. This method can be implemented with social information by introducing the definition of SDV, SDM, and intelligent Design Manager, making it highly adaptive for social manufacturing and Parallel Manufacturing.

An oracle bone recognition method based on eigenvalue-based preprocessing and deep learning

Recognition of oracle bone characters is essential for accurately interpreting Chinese cultural history. However, existing recognition techniques are significantly challenged by severe noise present in the original images, leading to low recognition accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes an oracle bone recognition method based on eigenvalue-based preprocessing and deep learning. The preprocessing method computes four tailored eigenvalues-equivalent connectivity domain diameter, minimum connectivity domain distance, point feature analysis matrix, and point eigenvalue-based on the unique structural characteristics of oracle bone characters, enabling more effective noise reduction. Subsequently, an improved model, DC-YOLOv8, is introduced, which replaces the standard convolution module with a deformable convolution module in the high-level layers of the backbone to enhance adaptability to highly deformed characters. Additionally, the Convolutional Block Attention Module is incorporated into the head component to improve the model’s ability to extract key features in critical regions. Experimental results demonstrate that YOLOv8 achieves accuracy rates of 90.14% and 90.97% on two datasets after applying the proposed preprocessing method. Furthermore, the accuracy of DC-YOLOv8 reaches 95.11%, 91.74%, and 93.75% across three datasets. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Society 5.0 addresses human behaviors and their consequences in social management, while emphasizing the integration of Cyber-Physical-Social Spaces to achieve a highly connected and circulated society. Prompted by the various social needs expressed on social media platforms, Prescriptive Manufacturing (PM) emerges as a proactive pre-manufacturing paradigm. This paper delves into PM within the context of Society 5.0. It highlights the development of Human Autonomous Organizations (HAOs) and the delivery of “on-demand” smart services, which are customized to meet both individual and broader societal demands. The social sensing framework of social needs across different social media platforms that enables the identification and anticipation of consumer demands in real-time is illustrated. This data-driven insight leverages artificial intelligence and robotics to facilitate customized design and on-demand production, aligning product creation with real user requirements. Furthermore, we discuss the implementation of human-centered smart services in PM, such as virtual try-on, virtual fitting, personalized retrofit, user-friendly scheduling, and proximity logistics, which not only enhance consumer experience but also optimize resource efficiency By examining the symbiosis between technological advancements and social need fulfillment, this study sheds light on how PM and HAOs can foster a more responsive, sustainable, and inclusive economy in society, ultimately contributing to a higher quality of life and sustainable development goals of Society 5.0.
