Modeling Public Concerns for Unmanned Aerial System Operations in the National Airspace System

The Unites States commercial unmanned aerial system (UAS) market was valued at $99.6 million in 2020 and is projected to reach $3.7 billion by 2030. Applications for these commercial UAS range from risk mitigation and surveillance to package delivery. Coupled with these emerging applications are the unique factors that arise with a commercial UAS’s compact size and low-altitude flights among the civilian populace. In this work, a value model was created to attempt to aid in determining the infringement of aUAS operation configuration on a civilian environment. Value functions were developed in an additive model that measures infringement (a UAS’s encroachment or trespass on a right or privilege of a civilian) based on these attributes. The resulting value model was tested by running 100,000 random simulations. Analysis of the simulation results and sensitivity analysis of the model showed that fleet size, proximity, duration of the operation within a certain proximity, and total operation duration were the attributes that drove a UAS operation’s infringement on an environment. A use case of an Amazon delivery application was then examined. This is a realistic scenario simulated to study if duration of an operation and time near a structure are kept to a minimum, the infringement of an operation remained low. This study provides initial determination of how infringement of UAS can be quantified and what infringement values may look like for different operational scenarios. © 2023 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. A Composite Framework of Co-located Asymmetric Virtual Reality

As the variety of possible interactions with virtual reality (VR) continues to expand, researchers need a way to relate these interactions to users' needs and goals in ways that advance understanding. Existing efforts have focused mainly on the symmetric use of technology, which excludes a rising form of interaction known as asymmetric VR, in which co-located participants use different interfaces to interact with a shared environment. There must be a clear path to creating asymmetric VR systems that are rooted in previous work from several fields, as these systems have use cases in education, hybrid reality teams (using VR and other technologies to interact online and face to face), accessibility, as well as entertainment. Currently, there is no systematic way to characterize 1) how a system may be asymmetric, 2) how the different mediation technology and affordances within asymmetric VR support (or do not support) users' goals, and 3) the relationships and collaborative capabilities between users of these different technologies. In this paper, the authors use a scoping review to explore relevant conceptual frameworks for asymmetric interaction, mediation technology, and computer supported cooperative work to clarify the dimensions of asymmetry and synthesize the literature into a Composite framework for Asymmetric VR (CAVR). The paper concludes with suggestions of ways to test and expand the framework in order to guide future research as it identifies the most-beneficial interaction paradigms for co-located asymmetric VR. © 2021 Owner/Author.

User-centered design (UCD) has become an important concept in human-computer interaction (HCI) and other disciplines. While there is abundant UCD research, keyword analysis research has been less studied even though keywords are important for achieving better understanding of UCD. Therefore, this study provides keywords network a visual analysis of UCD articles published between 2009 and 2018 to answer the following questions: (1) What UCD-related keywords have been studied and in which disciplines? and (2) How have keywords been connected to on another? The study analyzed 304 keywords articles from IEEE, ACM, and ScienceDirect that included "UCD" in their titles. It utilized Gephi 0.9.2 to visualize keyword frequencies, relationships, and authors’ disciplines. The findings presented that the five most frequently mentioned keywords regarding UCD were "usability," "HCI," "User Experiences," "User-Centered," and "User Interfaces". The top five most identified disciplines in the UCD articles were computer Science, Design, Engineering, Education, and Psychology. In visualizing this data, we created a keyword hierarchy with various sizes of texts and circles, and we denoted various relationship levels between keywords by different weights of edges. This visualization of the selected 43 keywords shows a clear relationship between keywords in which UCD is strongly related to usability, UX, user-centered, HCI, Persona, prototype, interaction design, interface design, assistive technology, design thinking. The findings can be valuable in understanding the current UCD research mainstream for researchers and designers pursuing interdisciplinary approaches. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Previous research has shown that the sequence in which concepts are studied changes how well they are learned. In a series of experiments featuring naturalistic concepts (psychology concepts) and naïve learners, we extend previous research by showing that the sequence of study changes the representation the learner creates of the study materials. Interleaved study leads to the creation of relatively interrelated concepts that are represented by contrast to each other and based on discriminating properties. Blocked study, instead, leads to the creation of relatively isolated concepts that are represented in terms of their central and characteristic properties. The relative benefits of these representations depend on whether the test of conceptual knowledge requires contrastive or characteristic information. These results argue for the integrated investigation of the benefits of different sequences of study as depending on the characteristics of the study and testing situation as a whole. © CogSci 2017.

Traditional statistical methods have become insufficient when applied to image analysis. The increasing size of data volume and its complexity demands new statistical approaches and algorithms. Current methods imply losing intrinsic data structures, for example when data comes from multiway arrays. In this work we concentrate in two applications i) A pre-diagnostic smartphone application for detection of cardiovascular abnormalities through the analysis of heartbeat sounds and the use of augmented reality for displaying valuable information to the end user in an immersive experience. Using the latest augmented reality smartphone applications, a digital stethoscope, heartbeat audios and classification using neural networks, we measure a user's heartbeat and output in real time, a pre-diagnostic of their current cardiovascular health. ii) A study concerning comatose patients, based on a Diffusion Tensor Image Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) dataset that predicts long-term outcome for patients having suffered a brain traumatic injury. MRI images were obtained from 104 comatose patients, 65 with positive outcome and 39 with negative outcome, 39 controls were used. The fact that each volumetric image led into a 143x255726x4 tensor input, is used to briefly explain how new multiway methods could be useful in image analysis methods.

This paper describes the visualization of global solar radiation data for teaching and research. ERA-40 data (1957-2002) [7,8] from the ECMWF model [6] was processed into annual and monthly averages over 45 years. A collaborative and iterative design methodology, including perceptually validated color progression was used. The data was visualized via Python's matplotlib (basemap) module. The results (maps and animations), data and python code can be downloaded from https://***/solarRadiationMaps.

Fall detection systems have been proposed to prevent additional injuries following fall accidents. This paper introduces an easily learnable fall detection system based on the data of an individual patient in a hospital room. The improvement of low performance using a single accelerometer at wrists and the inconvenience of sensor attached to a waist in the conventional approach was concentrated on by integrating heart rate signals to the conventional acceleration approach and changing the sensor location from a waist to wrists. As for the optimal heart rate feature selection, we proposed a four-feature vector combination (root mean square of successive differences, standard deviation of successive differences, normal to normal 50, normal to normal 20) with correlation and mutual information analysis in addition to mean absolute deviation selected as an accelerometer feature. To easily acquire and train the patients' fall data, our system was based on unsupervised learning approaches using Gaussian mixture models for optimal classifiers with the optimal cluster number decided by cluster validation index of square error sum. A 10-fold cross validation was applied for a final performance evaluation where each threshold for separating fall state from non-fall state was automatically decided in several comparison groups, which were created on the basis of fusion timing and used sensors. As a result, despite sensors attached to the wrist, the wearable inconvenience of the conventional is overcome using the feature-level fused approach between heart rates and accelerations with the accuracy up to 98.39 %, which is closest to 99.34 % of the case using a single accelerometer located at the waist.

Various e-learning systems that provide electronic textbooks are gathering data on large numbers of student reading interactions. This data can potentially be used to model student knowledge acquisition. However, reading activity is often overlooked in canonical student modeling. Prior studies modeling learning from reading either estimate student knowledge at the end of all reading activities, or use quiz performance data with expert-crafted knowledge components (KCs). In this work, we demonstrate that the dynamic modeling of student knowledge is feasible and that automatic text analysis can be applied to save expert effort. We propose a data-driven approach for dynamic student modeling in textbook-based learning. We formulate the problem of modeling learning from reading as a reading- time prediction problem, reconstruct existing popular student models (such as Knowledge Tracing) and explore two automatic text analysis approaches (bag-of-words-based and latent semantic-based) to build the KC model. We evaluate the proposed framework using a dataset collected from a human-computer interaction course. Results show that our approach for reading modeling is plausible;the proposed Knowledge Tracing-based student model reliably outperforms baselines and the latent semantic-based approach can be a promising way to construct a KC model. Serving as the first step to model dynamic knowledge in textbook-based learning, our framework can be applied to a broader context of open-corpus personalized learning. © 2016 ACM.

Most senior citizens in the U.S. use the Internet on a regular basis yet frequently run into basic issues they cannot solve themselves. We conducted contextual inquiry with 6 participants and an online survey with 25 participants to determine the difficulties and frustrations these users face. From the research findings we designed Tipper, a browser-based system to provide contextual help for seniors on the Web. Usability testing shows Tipper to be a simple yet powerful solution to make seniors more competent and comfortable on the Web. This paper reports the current progress of Tipper and indicates our future direction.

Very recently, there has been a perfect storm of technical advances that has culminated in the emergence of a new interaction modality: on-body projected interfaces. Such systems enable the wearer to use their body as an input and output platform with interactive graphics. Projects such as PALMbit and Skinput sought to answer the initial and fundamental question: whether or not on-body projected interfaces were technologically possible. Although considerable technical work remains, we believe it is important to begin shifting the question away from how and what, and towards where, and ultimately why. These are the class of questions that inform the design of next generation systems. To better understand and explore this expansive space, we employed a mixed-methods research process involving more than two thousand individuals. This started with high-resolution, but low-detail crowdsourced data. We then combined this with rich, expert interviews, exploring aspects ranging from aesthetics to kinesthetics. The results of this structured exploration, point the way towards more comfortable, efficacious, and enjoyable on-body user experiences. Copyright © 2014 ACM.
