The 2010 earthquake in Haiti not only devastated the country's infrastructure, it also left many orphaned children, which accelerated the pace of international transracial adoptions by families in the United States and other developed countries. While international adoptees such as these Haitian children are older and will therefore likely remember some aspects of their birth culture, often younger children are at risk of forgetting much of their cultural and linguistic heritage. Despite much research on international transracial adoptions, surprisingly few web-based resources are available to adoptees for exploring and connecting with their birth cultures. To address this shortcoming, we used an iterative approach of ethnographic methods, paper prototypes, usability testing and heuristic evaluations to design Synergy, a system which allows adoptees to explore and connect with their birth cultures and its people autonomously. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Association mapping studies promise to link DNA mutations to gene expression data, possibly leading to innovative treatments for diseases. One challenge in large-scale association mapping studies is exploring the results of the computational analysis to find relevant and interesting associations. Although many association mapping studies find associations from a genome-wide collection of genomic data to hundreds or thousands of traits, current visualization software only allow these associations to be explored one trait at a time. The inability to explore the association of a genomic location to multiple traits hides the inherent interaction between traits in the analysis. Additionally, researchers must rely on collections of in-house scripts and multiple tools to perform an analysis, adding time and effort to find interesting associations. In this paper, we present a novel visual analytics system called GenAMap. GenAMap replaces the time-consuming analysis of large-scale association mapping studies with exploratory visualization tools that give geneticists an overview of the data and lead them to relevant information. We present the results of a preliminary evaluation that validated our basic approach. © 2011 IEEE.

Due to system limitations, interactions in virtual environments are often unnatural and this may impact performance. During learning, unnatural interactions draw from a finite pool of cognitive resources, meaning that those resources cannot be used for a concurrent, possibly more important task. Because users typically have primary objectives to accomplish in the virtual world, we argue that interaction techniques and other system design choices should account for task compatibility. We use a dual-task paradigm to study resource usage during locomotion tasks varying in their similarity to real-world locomotion. In one experiment, unnatural locomotion interfaces required additional spatial resources compared to natural movements. Some participants used unique strategies unlikely in traditional dual-task studies, possibly due to the high level of immersion. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Digital signage has become prevalent in public spaces, but consumers are faced with many choices from various displays with the result that consumers often ignore important information. To "recover" customer attention, various retailers have recently begun to deploy dynamic digital menu boards, which are plasma screens that combine the power of video with multimedia content. We examine the effect of these boards on healthy eating, a topic that has been on the national agenda for some time as Americans struggle with obesity. The introduction of a specialized form of dynamic digital menu boards in fast food restaurants has the potential to increase unhealthy eating if retailers were to use them to "upsell" consumers to higher margin but less healthy menu items. By the same token, these boards could also be used to influence consumers to make healthier food choices resulting in benefits to the consumer and society. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Typical interaction designers which are not climate scientists, but interaction designers can make well-informed use of climate sciences and closely related sciences are discussed. interaction design can make scientific information, interpretations, and perspectives available in an accessible and widely distributed form so that people's consciousness is raised. interaction design can help bridge the gap between scientific predictions and notions of certainty and uncertainty. The tipping point, by definition, is the point at which any efforts to stop something from happening arrive too late. The 2007 IPCC report predicts climate change will have massive implications for global food production and conditions of production, as well as for water, coastal habitations, health, and ecosystems. Such systems must make this information available at scale and in forms that are suitable to a number of different constituencies, individuals, policy makers, governments, and intergovernmental organizations.

In this paper, we describe a small-scale virtual reality system to support the creative manipulation of digital models (meshes) in 3D via two Phantom force-feedback devices. The system permits the artist to interact with a 3D model with both hands simultaneously and to view and feel the model in a 3D virtual environment. The system supports the application of color through painting, cutting and sculpting through interactive deformation of the 3D models in realtime with immediate visual and haptic (force) feedback. A 3D model's deformation properties can be altered as part of the artistic process. The main technical contributions are the bimanual (two handed) artistic interaction and a novel method for interactively defining the deformation properties ("malleability") via painting part of the 3D model with a special "deformation color." This permits the artist to assign different values of "malleability" to specific areas of the model in order to locally manipulate the deformation behavior before or during interactive sculpting. © 2010 IADIS.

To achieve effective 3D shape retrieval, there is a crucial need for efficient shape matching methods. This paper introduces a new method for 3D shape matching, which uses a simplified octree representation of 3D mesh models. The simplified octree representation was developed to improve time and space efficiency over prior representations. The proposed method also stores octree information in extensible markup language format, rather than in a new proprietary data file type, to facilitate comparing models over the Internet. © 2009 by ASME.

The goal of this research study was to develop a music therapy tool using a computer-generated harp which could provide users with visual, audio, and haptic feedback during interaction with the virtual instrument. Realistic 3D visual and haptic feedback was provided through immersion in a portable augmented reality-based system composed of a video see- through head mounted display (HMD) and a Sensable Phantom Omni haptic device. Users play the virtual harp by using the Phantom Omni haptic device to pluck or strum the strings of the harp. Users can also freely move the harp in the augmented reality environment to provide a more realistic experience, similar to that of playing a traditional musical instrument. The system will be used to provide interactive musical experiences and to develop motor skills among individuals with disabilities through music therapy. A virtual therapist feature was developed which can be used by a therapist without musical knowledge to observe a user during therapy exercises or by a user to engage in self-motivated therapy exercises outside the therapy room. With the virtual therapy feature, users can follow a simple pre-determined sequence of notes using color-coded strings. Argumentation is a process that occurs often in ill-defined domains and that helps deal with the illdefinedness. Typically a notion of "correctness" for an argument in an ill-defined domain is impossible to define or verify formally because the underlying concepts are open-textured and the quality of the argument may be subject to discussion or even expert disagreement. Previous research has highlighted the advantages of graphical representations for learning argumentation skills. A number of intelligent tutoring systems have been built that support students in rendering arguments graphically, as they learn argumentation skills. The relative instructional benefits of graphical argument representations have not been reliably shown, however. In this paper we present a formative evaluation of LARGO (Legal ARgument Graph Observer), a system that enables law students graphically to represent examples of legal interpretation with hypotheticals they observe while reading texts of U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments. We hypothesized that, compared to a text-based alternative, LARGO's diagramming language geared toward depicting hypothetical reasoning processes, coupled with non-directive feedback, helps students better extract the important information from argument transcripts and better learn argumentation skills. A first pilot study, conducted with volunteer first-semester law students, provided support for the hypothesis. The system especially helped lower-aptitude students learn argumentation skills, and LARGO improved the reading skills of students as they studied expert arguments. A second study with LARGO was conducted as a mandatory part of a first-semester University law course. Although there were no differences in the learning outcomes of the two conditions, the second study showed some evidence that those students who engaged more with the argument diagrams through the advice did better than the text condition. A rear-projection multi-touch tabletop display was augmented with hand tracking utilizing computer vision techniques. Touch detection by frustrated total internal reflection is useful for achieving interaction with tabletop displays, but the technique is not always reliable when multiple users in close proximity simultaneously interact with the display. To solve this problem, we combine touch detection and hand tracking techniques in order to allow multiple users to simultaneously interact with the display without interference. Our hope is that by considering activities occurring on and above a tabletop display, multiuser interaction will become more natural and useful, which should ultimately support collaborative work. © 2008 IEEE.
