Drivers of e-government use during the COVID-19 pandemic: the case of Vietnam

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted various systems that drove people to adapt to certain technologies, such as electronic government services, for daily survival and to meet social distancing requirements. Therefore, this study aims to determine the antecedents of e-government use based on prospect theory and modified unified theory of acceptance use of technology (UTAUT) during a pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: Convenience sampling of 368 respondents from Vietnam was conducted, and questionnaires were distributed personally or by email. The data were analyzed following a two-stage structural equation modeling (SEM) using SPSS v23 and AMOS v23. The validity and reliability of the instrument were tested and ensured. Findings: Results show that perceived severity drives government support and social influence while perceived security drives government support, social influence and trust. Social influence enhances government support and trust, which both drives e-government use. Mediation analysis shows that government support mediates perceived the influence of perceived severity on e-government use. Practical implications: The integration of prospect theory and UTAUT brings into light what will drive the adoption of e-government in the context of Vietnam. Supporting mechanisms, such as security measures, trust-building, government support and social influence, will drive citizens to adapt to technologies provided by the government but would also rely on the perceived risks and benefits. Originality/value: This study integrates prospect theory and a modified version of UTAUT to explain the drivers of e-government use. The results reveal that under uncertainties, government support is critical in driving the use of e-government for people to manage the daily lives for survival. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

The term culturally cognizant listening is introduced as nonjudgmental, active listening style taught with self-reflection and perspective-taking behaviors using a service-learning pedagogy. Given the climate of societal discord on topics of diversity, there is an increased need to enhance listening skills. The purposes of this thematic analysis are to describe the concept of culturally cognizant listening using the analogies of mirrors (self-awareness) and windows (nonjudgment perspective taking) and examine its effectiveness. Data from a convenience sample of 47 undergraduates representing three cohorts enrolled in a listening course are presented. Overall, students learned the culturally cognizant listening style based on service-learning using the analogies of mirrors and windows. © 2021 International Listening Association.

Therapeutic Working Alliance in Brief Therapy with College Students: In-Person Versus Telemental Health

This study compared the therapeutic working alliance in brief counseling using two delivery methods: synchronous video delivery and in-person delivery. The alliance was measured using the Working Alliance Inventory (client version). Participants were 49 undergraduate college students between the ages of 18 and 22. Solution-focused brief therapy was the treatment protocol, and the study used a randomized, controlled design. Welch’st-tests and non-inferiority analyses were conducted, in addition to hierarchical regression analyses to examine the predictive value of the working alliance on post-treatment anxiety. Non-inferiority statistical analyses indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in working alliance for online delivery compared to in-person. A hierarchical regression analysis suggests that the therapeutic working alliance contributed to anxiety treatment outcomes for college student participants. © The Author(s) 2024.

“They Just Don’t Get That We Matter”: Black Boys’ Critical Consciousness development During a Health Crisis and Racial Reckoning

While the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened racial unrest throughout 2020–2021 brought forth unprecedented disruption and trauma to youth and their families globally, these societal occurrences also provided fodder for youth learning and development. We use a theory of critical consciousness development (e.g., critical reflection, critical motivation, and critical action) and a racialized lens on social-psychological “mattering” to explore the voiced perspectives of adolescent Black high school boys, who participated in our school-university research partnership called The Black Boy Mattering Project. Findings from focus group interviews, gathered over the course of two school years, revealed that as participants navigated the health crisis and widespread racial reckoning, they deepened their critical consciousness of their marginal mattering. Marginal mattering reflects a type of perceived insignificance driven by sensing hyper-awareness from others for the alleged negative traits of one’s minoritized (e.g., racial) group. It led to Black boys feeling unappreciated, undervalued, and even feared in society and school environments. Findings show that while maneuvering COVID-19, participants’ encounters with Black Lives Matter via social media and news outlets inspired their critical reflection on the racial realities that framed their social and school lives and fueled their marginal mattering. Participants also determined protestors’ capacity to impact social change for the Black community, which inspired them to evaluate their critical motivation for making school-level change. While participants did not join street-level protests, they engaged in critical action through social media and some school-based endeavors. Implications suggest ways forward for more humanizing school policies and practices. © The Author(s) 2025.

Academic motivations and the risk of not in employment, education or training: university and vocational college undergraduates comparison

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationship between academic motivations and the risk of Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) among university undergraduates and Vocational Education and Training (VET) undergraduates. Design/methodology/approach: The sample included 402 Vietnamese university undergraduates and 250 VET undergraduates in the southern region of Vietnam. Students took part in a survey, with all participants being informed about the study’s purpose and assured that their involvement was entirely voluntary. In addition to descriptive statistics, the study employed linear regression in SPSS to examine hypotheses. Findings: The findings indicate that, for university students, intrinsic motivation and mastery approach motivation are associated with reduced NEET risk, while performance avoidance motivation is positively linked to this tendency. In contrast, for VET students, extrinsic motivation and performance approach motivation are negatively associated with NEET risk, but mastery approach motivation may exacerbate the risk. Originality/value: Grounded in the principles of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Achievement Goal Theory (AGT), the study proposes that university students may prioritize competence improvement, knowledge acquisition and the satisfaction of their learning interests, which they believe will help them acquire valuable knowledge beneficial for their future careers. Conversely, VET students emphasize performance and external achievement, which may enhance their outcome and reduce NEET risk. These findings offer significant theoretical and practical insights into the adoption of SDT and AGT and also provide educators or policymakers with more detailed information regarding university and VET students’ learning and development. © 2024, Wen Cheng and Pham Ngoc Thien Nguyen.

Walking in high-heel shoes induces redistribution of joint power and work

Walking in high-heel shoes (HHS) decreases the push-off power and little research has examined the specific muscle groups that compensate for it. The purpose was to examine the effects of walking in HHS compared to barefoot on lower extremity net joint work and power. Fourteen young women walked in HHS and barefoot at a fixed speed of 1.3 m·s⁻¹. Marker position and ground reaction force data were synchronously measured at 100 and 1000 Hz, respectively. Peak power and joint work variables were computed over the power phases of the gait cycle using an inverse dynamic approach. When walking in HHS was compared to barefoot, participants exerted a diminished push-off characterized by lesser peak power and lesser work by the ankle plantar flexors in late stance (A2 phase;p < 0.001). To compensate for the reduced ankle plantar flexor power, greater peak power was generated and work was performed in early stance by hip extensors (H1 phase;p ≤ 0.001), in mid-stance by knee extensors (K2 phase;p < 0.001) and in late stance and early swing phase by hip flexor muscles (H3 phase;p ≤ 0.001). Walking in HHS induces biomechanical plasticity and causes distal-to-proximal redistribution of net joint power and work during walking. © 2023 The Author(s). Indigenous people around the Kerinci Seblat National Park(KSNP),Indonesia,have a high dependence on forest resources as their main source of *** study addressed the vulnerability of Rejang indigenous people around the KSNP to climate *** popular livelihood vulnerability index(LVI)model was adapted by adding and modifying subcomponents suitable for the study *** data were collected through household surveys in two communities:Embong and *** total,146 samples were selected for this study using stratified random *** results showed that Embong was more vulnerable to climate change than *** exhibited a higher level of vulnerability to the effects of socio-demographic profile,social network,health,and natural disasters and climate variability,whereas Topos was more vulnerable to livelihood strategy,food,and ***,Embong was more exposed to natural disasters and climate variability than Topos,but it demonstrated higher adaptive capacity and lower sensitivity than ***,socio-demographic profile influenced adaptive capacity in both *** was influenced most by health in Embong,and sensitivity was influenced most by food in *** the vulnerability levels were not high in the two communities,several subcomponents must be specifically ***,this study can help the government make informed decisions to enhance adaptive capacity of the KSNP to climate change.

Relugolix reduces leiomyoma extracellular matrix production via the transforming growth factor-beta pathway

Objective: To determine if the oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist relugolix affects leiomyoma extracellular matrix production through the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) pathway. Design: Laboratory study. Subjects: None. Exposure: Exposure of human leiomyoma cells to TGF-β and/or relugolix. Main Outcome Measures: Production of TGF-β, pSMAD2/3, SMAD2/3, collagen 1A1 (COL1A1), fibronectin (FN1), and versican (VCAN) in treated and untreated leiomyoma cells. Results: Transforming growth factor-beta 3 production decreased at 24 hours with relugolix 10 nM (0.80 ± 0.09-fold) and 100 nM (0.86 ± 0.06-fold) and at 48 hours with relugolix 1 nM (0.86 ± 0.05-fold) and 100 nM (0.86 ± 0.06-fold). pSMAD2/3 production decreased at 24 hours with relugolix 1 nM (0.71 ± 0.01-fold), 10 nM (0.68 ± 0.01-fold), and 100 nM (0.41 ± 0.10-fold). Compared with relugolix treatment alone at the same concentration, combination treatment at 24 hours resulted in significantly increased COL1A1, FN1, and VCAN production with relugolix 1 nM, 10 nM, and 100 nM. At 48 hours, combination treatment resulted in significantly increased COL1A1, FN1, and VCAN production with relugolix 10 nM and 100 nM. Conclusion: Relugolix regulated leiomyoma size by decreasing COL1A1, FN1, and VCAN production. This effect is at least partly through the TGF-β pathway. © 2024

The OECD’s ‘Well-being 2030’ agenda: how PISA's affective turn gets lost in translation

Well-being 2030 has become the latest rationale for the OECD’s education work. This vision has given rise to new assessments of student well-being beginning with PISA 2015. The OECD, recognising the problems of PISA 2015, conceptualised a wider student well-being construct in PISA 2018, and attempted to measure ‘students’ feelings’. However, analyses of the OECD’s affective turn reveal major problems remain. Our critique is empirically underpinned by an innovative analytical strategy: comparing PISA 2018 student questionnaire translations across different ‘economies’ that use the same written language (China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan). Our analyses confirm that the OECD imagines a cultural and context-free world, one in which translation and measurements are simply technical problems to be engineered, rather than deeper ‘problems’ of worldviews that require attunement. To encourage the OECD to recognise these differences in its future assessments, we offer starting points from recent research in cultural psychology. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

An e-portfolio is a digital data collection of trainees that can advance learning by providing a way to organize, archive, and display individual or group work. The purpose of writing this article is to explain the use of e-portfolios as an assessment tool in training activities. E-portfolio as an assessment tool is more effective than standardized assessment tests which are many and complex because they facilitate the learning process and assessment. The method used is a literature study. As a result, the e-portfolio assessment using the LMS device was used as a learning medium, especially to store all of the participants' learning activities during the training. E-portfolio assessment can support the learning process well, because it can assess the data collection of the work of trainees during the training process, both cognitive, affective and psychomotor assessments. © 2022 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
