Recent advancements in general-purpose AI have highlighted the urgent need to align AI systems with the goals, ethical principles, and values of individuals and society. Existing alignment research has been primarily approached as an AI-centered, static, and unidirectional process. However, this unidirectional perspective falls short of taking into account the dynamic and evolving interaction between humans and AI, necessitating a shift toward a bidirectional, interconnected mode of human-AI alignment. This SIG aims to outline the emerging areas of bidirectinoal human-AI alignment research, propose a blueprint of future goals and challenges for fundamental alignment research, and establish a shared platform to bring together experts from HCI, AI, social sciences, and more to advance interdisciplinary research and collaboration on human-AI alignment. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Impact of ultra-processed foods on human health: A comprehensive review of genomic instability and molecular mechanisms

In this review the nexus between genomic instability and human health is investigated, emphasizing the rising consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Introducing the NOVA food classification system, we explore the significant surge in UPF consumption over the past 3 decades and its correlation with heightened mortality rates. This exploration extends to the development of health issues such as obesity, cancer, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and depression. Existing evidence, including studies involving healthy adolescents and older adults, underscores a clear link between increased consumption of UPFs and heightened DNA damage. The primary objective of this review is to offer a comprehensive examination of the repercussions of elevated UPF consumption on human health. With a specific focus on unraveling the intricate relationship between these dietary choices and genomic instability, the review seeks to enhance our understanding. Through a targeted exploration of molecular pathways, the aim is to illuminate how dependence on UPFs may impact physical and mental well-being. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.

Examining the Perception of Vocal Deviation by Dysphonic and Nondysphonic Women

Aim: To investigate the auditory perception of vocal deviation by dysphonic and nondysphonic women and to correlate the accuracy rate with acoustic measurements. Methods: In total, 24 dysphonic women allocated to an experimental group (EG) and 10 nondysphonic women allocated to the control group (CG) participated in this study. The volunteers filled in the vocal screening form the vocal symptom scale (VoiSS) self-assessment protocol and made voice recordings during the emission of the vowel /Ɛ/, whose degree of deviation was examined through perceptual-auditory and acoustic evaluation;all the participants underwent audiometry. Three experiments were conducted for the perception tests. The first experiment consisted of randomly presenting 38 stimuli in isolation, 10 of which were healthy voices and 28 with different degrees of deviation, so that each participant could classify them as normal or altered. In the second experiment, the participants heard only breathy and healthy voices with different degrees of deviation and had to discriminate the presence or absence of breathiness. The third experiment was similar to the second experiment but with a rough voice. Results: Women in the EG had a lower hit rate (52.2%) in identifying dysphonic voices than women in the CG (69.6%) (P < 0.001). The women in the EG had a lower accuracy rate in identifying predominantly rough (62.7%) and breathy (62%) voices, compared with the accuracy rate of the women in the CG (73% and 75.6%, respectively) (P value < 0.001). There was a moderate negative correlation between the hit rate of nondysphonic women and the shimmer values. Conclusions: Dysphonia can interfere with the identification of dysphonic voices. Dysphonic women had a lower accuracy rate in identifying dysphonia and roughness and breathiness parameters than nondysphonic women. © 2025 The Voice Foundation

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Hovenia dulcis Thunb. has been used as a medicinal herb for the treatment of hepatic diseases and alcohol intoxication. Aim of the study: The genotoxic effect and the antigenotoxic potential of ethanolic extract of H. dulcis leaves and its methanolic fraction were evaluated against ethanol-induced damages in SH-SY5Y cells. Materials and methods: The phytochemical analysis and antioxidant activity of H. dulcis extracts were also assessed. In addition, a systems biology analysis was performed to investigate the molecular pathway of action of the H. dulcis leaves compounds. Results: The ethanolic extract and its methanolic fraction presented genotoxicity through comet assay at 0.5 and 0.25 mg/mL. On the other hand, both extracts showed protective action against ethanol at all concentrations. Additionally, an NBT assay was performed and demonstrated an ability of the extracts to reduce superoxide anion formation when SH-SY5Y cells were challenged with ethanol. HPLC analysis indicated the presence of quercitrin, isoquercitrin, and rutin. Further, system biology assays indicated a molecular action pathway, where the compounds from the leaves of H. dulcis, in addition to performing free radical scavenging activity, activate PP2A, and may inhibit the apoptosis pathway activated by ethanol-induced oxidative stress. Conclusions: This work is important to indicate potential antigenotoxic and antioxidant properties of H. dulcis leaves, and its use can be investigated against DNA damage induced by ethanol. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

The synergistic interaction between urbanicity and maternal education affecting childcare pressure related to autism spectrum disorder in two national birth cohort studies

To gain a holistic approach for parental help-seeking behavior and ASD diagnosis, this study aimed to use two national birth cohort study datasets to investigate the pathway relationship between personal and social/environmental factors, including maternal perceived childcare pressure, maternal level of education, urbanization at age 3, and the chance of receiving a autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis at when children are aged 5.5 years (2.5 years later). The 2003 Taiwan Birth Cohort Pilot Study (TBCS-p; N = 1618) and 2005 Taiwan Birth Cohort Study (TBCS; N = 19,183) datasets were used. The TBCS-p and TBCS both showed similar prevalence of ASD (0.3-0.4%). Children with ASD characteristics, as measured using the Modified Checklist of Autism in Toddlers, had 8.27-18.20 times increased likelihood of receiving ASD diagnosis [TBCS confidence interval (CF) of 5.32-12.86; TBCS-p CF of 2.03-163.46]. Pathway analysis showed that, although having a mother with higher education or who lived in a city decreased the chance for ASD diagnosis, the interactive effect of a maternal higher level of education and living in a city led to an increased likelihood for ASD diagnosis. Additionally, mothers who perceived a higher level of childcare pressure were also more likely to seek medical assistance and diagnosis. Access to healthcare (living in the city), maternal level of awareness (level of education), and perceived childcare pressure are all factors that influence help-seeking behavior and diagnosis. Therefore, medical professionals should pay special attention to the developmental condition of children in underserved backgrounds and rural areas to prevent delayed diagnosis.

There is an emerging interest in studying social action and civic engagement as a part of the developmental process. Studies among youth of color indicate that empowerment has been associated with well-being, a critical perspective, and in combating social oppression. These studies also show that civic involvement and awareness of social justice issues are associated with positive developmental outcomes including empowerment. The range of predictors and outcomes related to empowerment have been insufficiently explored. This study used structural equation modeling path analysis techniques to examine the association community civic participation and psychological sense of community have with intrapersonal and cognitive psychological empowerment, through both ethnic identity and social justice orientation among urban youth of color (N =383;53.1% Female;75% Hispanic;50.6% were 13 and 15 years of age). Findings illustrate that greater community civic participation and psychological sense of community are associated with both intrapersonal and cognitive psychological empowerment, through both ethnic identity and a social justice orientation;however, with some noted variations. Ethnic identity and social justice orientation mediated community civic participation and psychological sense of community and both intrapersonal and cognitive psychological empowerment. Implications put forward for community youth-workers and community programming. © 2020, Springer Nature B.V.

The Residential Therapeutic Service (SRT) is an important device for the psychosocial rehabilitation of those discharged from long hospital stays without family ties. However, the care and supervision of caregivers stands out in the challenge of reconciling the autonomy of residents. To investigate the perceptions of caregivers about work in the SRTs and their relationship with the promotion of the right to health and citizenship for residents. Descriptive, qualitative study, developed in two SRTs in the interior of the state of Minas Gerais. During the first semester of 2019, data were collected through a semi-structured interview directed by Quality Rights and the Collective Subject Discourse was used for data analysis. The right to citizenship is guaranteed through access to a dignified life and through the psychosocial rehabilitation expressed by autonomy, inclusion and communication in STRs. However, few resources for leisure and few visits to homes represent existing gaps. The right to health occurs through the monitoring of residents in the Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) and directing them to care in existing health services at different levels of health care. The promotion of citizenship and the right to health in the SRT is directly correlated to the work of caregivers who need support from the multidisciplinary team and training that ensure care based on the bond, respect and motivation. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature India Private Limited.

Cough is a vital defensive reflex for expelling harmful substances from the *** sensory afferents for the cough reflex have been intensively ***,the brain mechanisms underlying the cough reflex remain poorly ***,we developed a paradigm to quantitatively measure cough-like reflexes in *** this paradigm,we found that prodynorphin-expressing(Pdyn+)neurons in the nucleus of the solitary tract(NTS)are critical for capsaicin-induced cough-like *** neurons receive cough-related neural signals from Trpv1+vagal sensory *** activation of Pdyn+NTS neurons triggered respiratory responses resembling cough-like *** the divergent projections of Pdyn+NTS neurons,a glutamatergic pathway projecting to the caudal ventral respiratory group(cVRG),the canonical cough center,was necessary and sufficient for capsaicin-induced cough-like *** results reveal that Pdyn+NTS neurons,as a key neuronal population at the entry point of the vagus nerve to the brainstem,initiate cough-like reflexes in mice.
