The benefits and drawbacks of adopting mobile learning as perceived by junior high school teachers in Taiwan

The Taiwan government is trying to explore the benefits of using mobile devices to enhance the effectiveness of student learning. While many plans and projects have been launched, but the results are still meager. This research is thus aimed to discover the benefits and challenges of promoting mobile learning in Taiwan. 120 self-developed questionnaires were delivered to five junior high schools that have participated in governmental mobile learning projects. The results indicated that teachers give higher average scores to the benefits of mobile learning than drawbacks. The major benefits include inspiring students’ learning interests, improving students’ concentration, enriching the curriculum contents, and enhancing learning conveniences, while school members lacking internet security literacy and lacking adequate competences to effectively apply mobile learning in the classroom are perceived as the major challenges. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Student satisfaction with EMI courses: the role of motivation and engagement

Purpose: In response to internationalization and globalization, especially in higher education, universities in non-English-speaking countries have implemented English as a medium of instruction (EMI). The purpose of this study is to assess the satisfaction of students in terms of dimensions of EMI courses and examine the relationship between student motivation, engagement, and satisfaction with EMI courses. Design/methodology/approach: By using a quantitative approach based on structured questionnaires of 437 Vietnamese undergraduate students, this study applied hierarchical regression analysis to examine the relationship between student motivation, engagement, and satisfaction with EMI courses. Findings: Students have a relatively positive perception of the EMI courses that they have taken. In particular, they were most satisfied with teachers' teaching characteristics and least satisfied with students' learning characteristics. The study also confirmed that cognitive and emotional engagement have mediating effects on the relationship between motivation and students' satisfaction with EMI courses. Originality/value: This study suggests that both educational institutions and teachers in non-speaking English countries should pay more attention to motivational factors to engage students in learning and ensure that they are satisfied with EMI courses. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Mindsets of suicide trajectories: An Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count analysis of suicide hotline conversations

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the psychological characteristics of the individuals with various suicide risks using computerized text analysis, in the hopes of a better understanding of suicide trajectories. Methods: 627 first-time callers' records were randomly selected from Taiwan An-Shin Hotline database between 2013 and 2018. The voice records were evaluated by two psychologists to determine the levels of suicide risk (156 with uncertainty of risk, 177 with low suicidal ideation, 157 with high suicidal ideation, and 137 with suicide preparation/attempt) and transcribed into text. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2015 (LIWC2015) program combined with Chinese dictionary were then used to calculate the frequency of word categories. Results: Exploratory factor analysis identified four mindsets of language characteristics, named “opposition and questioning”, “active engagement”, “negative rumination”, and “focus on death”. Psychological descriptions of the mindsets were also obtained through correlation analysis with the LIWC2015 categories and indicators. The four mindsets effectively distinguished the callers with different levels of suicide risk. Conclusion: The psychological characteristics of people with various suicide risks can be described and differentiated via the closed-word categories and composite indicators. These results provide useful information for practitioners and researchers. © 2024 American Association of Suicidology.

Amplification and/or overexpression of ERBB2, the gene encoding HER2, can be found in 15–20% of invasive breast cancers and is associated with an aggressive phenotype and poor clinical outcomes. Relentless research efforts in molecular biology and drug development have led to the implementation of several HER2-targeted therapies, including monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine-kinase inhibitors and antibody–drug conjugates, constituting one of the best examples of bench-to-bedside translation in oncology. Each individual drug class has improved patient outcomes and, importantly, the combinatorial and sequential use of different HER2-targeted therapies has increased cure rates in the early stage disease setting and substantially prolonged survival for patients with advanced-stage disease. In this Review, we describe key steps in the development of the modern paradigm for the treatment of HER2-positive advanced-stage breast cancer, including selecting and sequencing new-generation HER2-targeted therapies, and summarize efficacy and safety outcomes from pivotal studies. We then outline the factors that are currently known to be related to resistance to HER2-targeted therapies, such as HER2 intratumoural heterogeneity, activation of alternative signalling pathways and immune escape mechanisms, as well as potential strategies that might be used in the future to overcome this resistance and further improve patient outcomes.

Passive social network usage and life satisfaction among Vietnamese university students: a moderated mediation model of self-esteem and gender

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the role of self-esteem in mediating the relationship between passive social networking usage (PSNU) and life satisfaction, as well as whether the relationships between PSNU and self-esteem/life satisfaction as well as self-esteem and life satisfaction vary by gender. Design/methodology/approach: This research is conducted in compliance with the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association’s study on a subject of 304 students. Study participants are invited to participate in the survey by completing the anonymous questionnaire regarding passive social network usage, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Findings: The findings indicate that self-esteem mediated the relationship between PSNU and life satisfaction. Furthermore, gender moderated the self-esteem and life satisfaction relationship, and such an effect was stronger for females than males. Research limitations/implications: This study, adopting a cross-sectional design and self-report scale, examined the relationship between PSNU and life satisfaction. However, the short study duration hindered establishing a cause-and-effect relationship. Credibility concerns arose from participant-induced noise variables in the self-report scale. Future research should use diverse methods to validate underlying mechanisms. Despite limitations, the study revealed self-esteem as a mediating factor, alleviating the negative impact of PSNU on life satisfaction. Both male and female users are encouraged to engage in self-education, valuing their self-esteem for heightened life satisfaction. Originality/value: These findings contribute to the understanding of how passive social network usage predicts life satisfaction (mediating effect of self-esteem) based on social comparison theory and when self-esteem increases life satisfaction (moderating effect of gender) based on social role theory of gender differences. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.

After the outbreak of COVID-19, numerous language courses have embraced online learning. However, the shift of teaching environment also brought many technical and pedagogical challenges. Phonetics learning which requires mutual interaction, teacher’s clarification, and personal feedbacks so students can pronounce correctly is considered one of the most difficult subjects to teach in online context. Therefore, well designed studies are needed to understand the optimized teaching methods to improve student’s performance. This research adopted counterbalanced design to evaluate the effect of contrastive listening and discrimination (CLD) method and sound-character aggregation method (SCA) method in online context. Although both methods are suggested for phonetic learning in offline environment, the result show intermediate Chines-as-foreign-language (CFL) Japanese students had significant improvement after CLD method, but not after SCA method in an online context. However, although students did not have significant improvements after SCA method, its progress is not significantly different from CLD method. We further give some suggestions about teaching Japanese students about Chinese affricates in an online, one-on-one environment. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

INTRODUCTION:Global longitudinal strain (GLS) is an important prognostic indicator for predicting heart failure and cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD). Although access to GLS measurement has increased across institutions, its actual use in clinical practice remains limited due to practical barriers such as limited time and insufficient training. If reduced GLS could be predicted from conventional echocardiographic parameters, it could help identify patients who would most benefit from direct GLS assessment. Therefore, in this study, we tested the hypothesis that reduced GLS can be predicted from conventional echocardiography via a machine learning (ML) approach. METHODS:This single-center cross-sectional study included patients who visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Medical Center Hospital and underwent echocardiography with GLS before or after anticancer chemotherapy. Low-GLS was defined as a GLS < 16; otherwise, it was defined as Normal-GLS. Patients with EF < 50% were excluded. We developed ML models that predict Low-GLS from conventional echocardiography measurements. Sixteen ML models were constructed including various boosting and tree-based methods. We assessed the models by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, Positive predictive value (PPV), Negative predictive value (NPV), and F1 score. The Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method was employed to evaluate the essential predictors. RESULTS:A total of 1,484 patients (64 ± 13 years old, 69% female) were enrolled for ML model development, including 406 patients with Low-GLS and 1,078 with Normal-GLS. The best model for the test dataset was the CatBoost classifier (AUC, 0.748; accuracy, 0.734). Due to the influence of the global pandemic, online and distance learning has replaced traditional classroom and face-to-face interaction so students can continue learning. Internet mediated self-directed learning also climbed to a new height and foreign language learning from YouTube video is a very popular learning method for many. Furthermore, YouTube videos can supplement cross-cultural knowledge for foreign language (FL) learners, which is a critical yet hard to develop ability for FL teachers. However, unlike for FL textbooks, the cross-cultural elements have not been examined thoroughly for YouTube videos. Therefore, this study analyzed the most subscribed and watched Japanese Chinese-as-FL YouTuber, "Lee Sisters ch", which is also the official representative of HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) test. We selected 30 most watched videos and analyzed their contents according to Chastain’s Big ‘C’ small ‘c’ culture framework. The result showed 86.67% of the most popular 30 videos covered topics about culture: 23.33% of the videos were related to big ‘C’ culture and 63.33% were about small ‘c’ culture. Similar to earlier researches on FL textbooks, "Literature" was the main theme of big ‘C’. On the other hand, "Everyday living" was the most frequent small ‘c’ topic, which is a unique phenomenon for YouTube FL channels. Furthermore, not only did the portion of big ‘C’ and small ‘c’ cultures match the suggestions of FL scholars, the language used in all videos were also mainly in Japanese that fit the needs of Japanese CFL learners. It is concluded YouTube video may be suitable to learn cross-cultural knowledge for FL learner, especially for Japanese students. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
