Building a case for communities of practice as drivers of innovative teaching in English medium instruction context

While innovative teaching behavior is a promising type of competency that can equip faculty members with the necessary capability to adapt their teaching to fit their specific teaching context, how to achieve it remains underexplored. This study explored ten faculty members’ perceptions of the kind of values pertaining to innovative teaching behavior in English medium instruction (EMI) settings created by the co-participatory learning opportunities provided by their EMI community of practice (CoP). Using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis underpinned by the value creation framework, we identified three themes illustrating faculty members’ conceptualization of (1) prospects of value creation associated with membership in the community, (2) attained values, created through participating in the CoP, and (3) aspirational values, needed to sustain the community. Expectations of gains in professional development and peer support motivated members to join the community, and the values attained through co-participatory learning were underpinned by a sense of camaraderie and psychological safety that the community offered its members. Language-related support for developing English competencies and tailored support towards EMI issues constituted the main aspirational values members sought to gain. Finally, organizational support was highlighted as a crucial ingredient for sustaining the community’s activities. The implications of the results with respect to sustainable development of a faculty member’s innovative instructional practices are discussed.

The development of digital villages is a solid foundation for the successful implementation of village development. The study has identified 4 factors of the digital development measurement model (Information Communication Technology) and examined their impact on social life improvement. There are 5 phases of the digital development path in the village, namely offline, Infusing, Transforming, Leading, and Smart phases. This digital village development measurement was tested in two different types of village ecology, namely coastal and mountain villages in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. This measurement can help the village to know the current situation of the digital development of the village. The measurement results show that the village is in the transforming stage with an index value of 2.08. Other findings also show that villages have been able to reduce the digital divide, but face a second-level gap in digital inequality. An equally interesting finding is that mountain villages, which have been known to be closely compared to coastal villages, have been disrupted with the higher digital index. The advancement of these estimation results could be the subsequent stage in making arrangements to improve their village development in the future. © 2021 IEEE

The purpose of this study was to determine if the menstrual cycle influences the amplitude of transient (TEOAEs) and distortion-product (DPOAEs) otoacoustic emissions. Thirteen normal-hearing, normal-cycling females were monitored weekly for 12 weeks. TEOAE and DPOAE amplitudes were analyzed to determine if amplitude changes could be detected and correlated to phases of the menstrual cycle. No systematic amplitude changes were observed, demonstrating that evoked OAEs are unaffected by physiologic changes associated with the menstrual cycle.

Bicultural research is important for disaster education in Aotearoa NZ. Historically, deficit-based perspectives of Western Science underrepresent Māori knowledge. However, culturally grounded research partnerships have potential to revitalize engagement with Māori by braiding Indigenous Science and Western Science narratives to improve our collective understanding of the volcanic processes. We share insights from participant interviews on the co-creation of an educational virtual field trip (VFT) resource that weaves understandings from Mātaurānga Māori and Geology to teach about caldera volcanoes in Aotearoa NZ. This study highlights some key considerations for collaboration between Indigenous Māori and non-Māori partners. To conduct the research in a culturally appropriate way, a formal kawa (protocol) was established between the lead researcher and the Māori partners and culturally acceptable ethics in accordance with the Māori partners were implemented. The He Awa Whiria (braided river) methodology was followed through the multiple stages of engagement and the two-staged interview study design. Emergent codes from the interview indicate that relations and values are crucial for authentic partnerships and create space for sharing where challenges and emerging understandings can be repositioned. This study demonstrates that Māori academics, local Māori facilitators and researchers are crucial in the engagement process with local iwi (tribes) to define shared goals and understand expected project outcomes. We suggest that the development of bicultural educational resources must be grounded in an understanding of obligations to uphold the intergenerational intellectual property of the local iwi. This process requires significant resourcing of time, knowledge and energy and should be budgeted-in prior to the start of project-partnerships. © 2022 National Association of Geoscience Teachers.

In today's politically polarized environment, college students need strategies to discern trustworthy information. Educational interventions have had modest success in teaching students to fact-check online information using lateral reading, i.e., leaving the original content to investigate information sources and claims. College students (N = 157, M = 20.2 years (SD = 4.0), 61.8% F) completed a semester-long online curriculum teaching fact-checking via lateral reading. Students made gains in their lateral reading attitudes (i.e., preference for fact-checking using lateral reading strategies) and use of lateral reading. Preference predicted use at posttest, but not at pretest. At posttest, preference also partially mediated the effect of reading comprehension on use. The majority of students mentioned cognitive and/or contextual factors when explaining how the Internet contributes to political polarization, though their awareness of such factors did not increase post-intervention. © 2022 The Author(s). ABSTRACTABSTRACTWe compared attitudes about child support between the United States and South Korean respondents, using a multiple segment factorial vignette to gather quantitative and qualitative data from 132 Americans and 132 South Koreans. South Koreans were more likely than U.S. respondents to think child support should be paid. Respondents in both countries thought fathers should pay more child support when mothers had sole custody than when both parents shared custody. Remarriage, combined with custody, affected respondents’ attitudes. The primary rationale of U.S. respondents focused on issues of fairness, while Koreans highlighted fathers’ responsibility and obligation. Cross-cultural differences in attitudes regarding child support payments, and their implications for support compliance rates in the United States and South Korea, are discussed.

Purpose: Precision medicine according to molecularly defined subgroups offers great potential to improve outcomes for patients with metastatic lung adenocarcinoma. This study describes clinical outcomes and the impact of co-occurring genetic alterations on outcomes following stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) among patients with Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS)-mutant lung adenocarcinoma. Methods and Materials: A total of 195 patients with KRAS-mutant lung adenocarcinoma were treated with SRS for brain metastases (BMs) between 2014 and 2018 with follow-up until 2022 or death. Coprimary outcomes were median overall survival (OS) and intracranial progression-free survival (iPFS);univariable and multivariable Cox regression models and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used. Results: Median follow-up from the date of BM diagnosis was 11 months. Median OS and iPFS for the cohort were 27.7 months (95% CI, 19.7-36.8) and 22.1 months (95% CI, 16.8-48.9), respectively. Lesion-level local control at 12 and 24 months was 89.9% and 87.5%, respectively. In a multivariable Cox regression model, inferior OS was associated with coalterations in KEAP1 and STK11 (hazard ratio [HR], 1.94;95% CI, 1.04-3.62;q = 0.087), progressive (HR, 3.41;95% CI, 1.38-8.39;q = 0.087), and mixed response (HR, 3.52;95% CI, 1.2-10.3;q = 0.092) extracranial disease, and 6 or more BMs at time of diagnosis (HR, 2.58;95% CI, 1.22-6.63;q = 0.087). Positive programmed death ligand 1 status was associated with improved OS (HR, 0.57;95% CI, 0.37-0.87;P = .01). Inferior iPFS was associated with chemotherapy before SRS (HR, 2.69;95% CI, 1.42-5.09;q = 0.04) and age >65 years (HR, 2.21;95% CI, 1.25-3.93;q = 0.055). KRAS G12C was not associated with differences in iPFS, OS, or type of intracranial progression event following SRS. Conclusions: Coalteration of KRAS and KEAP1/STK11 was associated with inferior OS, but not iPFS. Similar outcomes were found in patients harboring KRAS G12C and non-G12C muta

Background: Unused and expired medications are continuously disposed of through toilets, drain, and household trash. This is potentially dangerous and polluting, posing risks to public health and the environment. Objective: This study investigated public awareness in the Kingdom of Bahrain regarding contamination of the environment by pharmaceutical waste and assessed patterns of household medication disposal as well as factors influencing the chosen disposal practice. Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed, using a self-administered online questionnaire that was sent publicly to all people living in Bahrain and aged above 18 years, through social media platforms. Results: The questionnaire was completed by a total of 450 participants;of whom 421 were Bahrainis (93.6%) and 29 were non-Bahrainis (6.4%). Almost two-thirds (60.9%) of the participants had good knowledge regarding environmental contamination by pharmaceutical wastes. The majority (73.3%) of the participants discarded the leftover medications in the household trash, and only 12.0% of them returned them to the pharmacy. More than three-quarters (79.6%) of the participants did not check if a disposal method was mentioned on the medication's packaging. Interestingly, most of the participants (85.1%) declared to be willing to participate in pharmaceutical waste minimizing programs if applied in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Conclusion: Environmental contamination by pharmaceutical waste can considerably be resolved by improving public awareness of household disposal of medications and stimulating their willingness to participate in pharmaceutical waste management interventions if established in the future. © 2021 IEEE.

In an attempt to develop a more ecologically valid measure of speech understanding in a background of competing speech, we constructed a quasidichotic procedure based on the monitoring of continuous speech from loudspeakers placed directly to the listener's right and left sides. The listener responded to the presence of incongruous or anomalous words imbedded within the context of two children's fairy tales. Attention was directed either to the right or to the left side in blocks of 25 utterances. Within each block, there were target (anomalous) and nontarget (nonanomalous) words. Responses to target words were analyzed separately for attend-right and attend-left conditions. Our purpose was twofold: (1) to evaluate the feasibility of such an approach for obtaining electrophysiologic performance measures in the sound field and (2) to gather normative interaural symmetry data for the new technique in young adults with normal hearing. Event-related potentials to target and nontarget words at 30 electrode sites were obtained in 20 right-handed young adults with normal hearing. Role of mentorship, career conceptualization, and leadership in developing women’s physics identity and belonging

The percentage of women receiving bachelor’s degrees in physics (25%) in the U.S. lags well behind that of men, and women leave the major at higher rates. Achieving equity in physics will mean that women stay in physics at the same rates as men, but this will require changes in the culture and support structures. A strong sense of belonging can lead to higher retention rates so interventions meant to increase dimensions of physics identity (interest, recognition, performance, and competence) may increase persistence overall and increase women’s retention differentially. We describe our model in which mentorship, an understanding of career options (career conceptualization), and leadership are inputs into the development of these dimensions of physics identity. This paper includes preliminary results from a qualitative study that aims to better understand how career conceptualization, leadership, and mentorship contribute to the development of physics identity and belonging. We report results from a survey of 15 undergraduate physics students which was followed up by interviews with 5 of those students. The students were from 2 institutions: a small private liberal arts college in the midwest region of the U.S. and a large public university in the southeast region of the U.S. classified as a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI). With respect to mentorship, consistent with the existing literature, we found that it could provide critical support for students’ engagement in the physics community. Leadership experiences have not previously been positioned as an important input into identity, yet we found that they helped women in physics feel more confident, contributing to their recognition of themselves as physics people. While the data on how career conceptualization contributed to the building of identity is limited, there are some connections to recognition and competence, and it will be an interesting avenue of future exploration.
