Do multicultural exposure and interaction affect creative teaching by building self-belief? A mixed methods study

This mixed-method study expands the understanding on how creative-self belief serve as one mechanism by which multicultural exposure and interaction, or multicultural experiences (MCEs), affect creative teaching. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey of 337 elementary and high school teachers in the Philippines while qualitative data were generated from interviews of a subset of 15 teachers. Through a convergent mixed methods design, a depiction of the relationships among creative self-beliefs, MCEs, and creative teaching was achieved with the following mixed-methods themes: (1) Teachers with MCEs teach creatively following assessment of MCEs;(2) Having MCEs is related to having more creative self-belief and confidence;(3) Creative self-beliefs and confidence gained from MCEs are related to creative teaching;and (4) MCEs build creative self-belief and confidence that support creative teaching behaviors. Implications of the study were discussed. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Examining relationships among student perception of social support, school belonging, relatedness, and effort in Muslim majority communities

Past research has indicated that student effort, which is a predictor of student success in academics, is associated with perceptions of relatedness, school belonging, and social support. In this study we examined the association among these variables using a cross-sectional sample of 12,666 school and university students from thirteen countries/regions. Our regression models explained as much as 27% of the total variation in effort. We also found evidence of a mediating role of school belonging in the relationship between social support and effort. In an age of disruption, uncertainty, and constant change, resilience and sustainability are critical to business success. Practitioners concerned with ensuring the longevity of their firm can learn much from the experiences of 140-year-old B. Grimm of Thailand, which evolved from a modest pharmacy into a leading multinational enterprise in Asia. A review of the company's history and interviews with its leaders reveal five basic elements—the 5Cs—that underlie a humanistic management strategy focused on the growth and development of all stakeholders. Integrated into every aspect of the organization's operations, they are: crafting a strong corporate culture and values;cultivating compassion-oriented people management;caring for stakeholders through ethics, social and environmental responsibility, and cooperative partnership;continuing innovation with high quality;and considering long-term adaptability and agility. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Contributions of Social Domain Theory for the Study of Exclusion: a Systematic Literature Review

Considering the negative impact that exclusion can have on individuals and society, psychology has invested in research in the area, from different theoretical perspectives. In the breadth of possibilities surrounding this area of knowledge, this article aimed to characterize the contributions of social domain theory (SDT) for the study of exclusion, through a systematic literature review based on the questions: what contributions to exclusion studies have been made by SDT and what methods are being used by researchers in this area for data collection and analysis? To respond, we searched for scientific articles on virtual platforms (SciELO, PePSIC, LILACS, and Capes Periodicals) and retrieved 19 articles after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that the theory’s main contributions for the study were diversity of themes found, although sexism and racism were the main types of prejudice researched as motivations for exclusions;judgments about situations of exclusion were associated with differences due to sociodemographic variables, the characteristics of the exclusion, and the context;studies on the role of emotions in judgments were also identified. Regarding the method used by the SDT studies on exclusion, there was a prevalence of cross-sectional and quantitative studies conducted with children and adolescents of the USA. This review showed that, despite SDT being recent and the inexistence of national articles following the adopted criteria, SDT has invested in studies that seek to comprehend which individual and contextual factors influence the acceptance or rejection of a prejudiced attitude of exclusion. © 2020, Associação Brasileira de Psicologia.

Colchicine is one of the oldest known microtubule-targeting agents and also represents a classic example of axial chirality and atropisomerism in medicine. This is because colchicine's axially chiral methoxytropone-trimethoxybenzene (called the AC ring) is directly responsible for tubulin binding and is thermodynamically set into the requisite form by a point chiral acetamido group on its B ring. Indeed, desacetamidocolchicine (DAAC), a colchicine analogue without the acetamido group, racemizes within minutes. Herein, we describe the synthesis as well as physical and biological characterization of a series of AC ring-containing molecules that represent B-ring further deconstructed variants of DAAC. These studies revealed a novel analogue with an AC ring that is highly stable to epimerization based not on thermodynamic stabilization but rather a high rotational barrier energy. Profiling and characterization of the dihedral angles were carried out computationally and experimentally using vibrational circular dichroism, demonstrating that the ground state dihedral angles of the new molecules differ significantly from those of colchicine. However, despite this difference, the molecule retained antiproliferative, tubulin-binding, and tubulin polymerization inhibitory activity.

Degrowth, i.e., a planned reduction in environmental impacts and economic scale, is increasingly discussed as a viable option for achieving sustainability. Yet, opponents counter that degrowth entails declines in economic standards, which will, in turn, reduce individual happiness and collective wellbeing. Our study explores the existing theoretical debate empirically, examining the case of Japan. There long-term decline in economic standards has not led to long-term decline in subjective wellbeing, thus bolstering the case for degrowth. © 2022 The Authors

The goal of this study was to examine the effect of hearing loss on theta and alpha electroencephalography (EEG) frequency power measures of performance monitoring and cognitive inhibition, respectively, during a speech-in-noise task. It was hypothesized that hearing loss would be associated with an increase in the peak power of theta and alpha frequencies toward easier conditions compared to normal hearing adults. The shift would reflect how hearing loss modulates the recruitment of listening effort to easier listening conditions. Nine older adults with normal hearing (ONH) and 10 older adults with hearing loss (OHL) participated in this study. EEG data were collected from all participants while they completed the words-in-noise task. It hypothesized that hearing loss would also have an effect on theta and alpha power. The ONH group showed an inverted U -shape effect of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but there were limited effects of SNR on theta or alpha power in the OHL group. The results of the ONH group support the growing body of literature showing effects of listening conditions on alpha and theta power. The null results of listening condition in the OHL group add to a smaller body of literature, suggesting that listening effort research conditions should have near ceiling performance. © 2023 Thieme Medical Publishers, Inc.. Background: Studies on disease burden in Taiwan are lacking. We aimed to quantify the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) attributable to high body mass index (BMI) in Taiwan. Methods: Using a comparative risk assessment approach from the Global Burden of Disease study, we estimated the population attributable fraction (PAF), attributable CVD burden, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) according to sex, age, and area of residence in Taiwan. The BMI distribution for the population was obtained from the National Health Interview Survey in 2013. CVD was defined as an ischemic heart disease or stroke. Results: The attributable PAF for CVD from high BMI was 18.0% (19.6% in men and 15.6% in women), and it was highest (42.7%) in those aged 25-30 years. Adults aged 60-65 years had the highest absolute DALYs (11,546). The average relative age-standardized attributable burden was 314 DALYs per 100,000 person-years, and it was highest in those aged 75-80 years (1,407 DALYs per 100,000 person-years). Those living in Taitung County had the highest PAF of 21.9% and the highest age-standardized attributable burden (412 DALYs). Conclusions: In Taiwan, an 18% reduction in CVDs could be achieved if obesity/overweight was prevented. Prevention was most effective in early adulthood. The absolute CVD burden from obesity/overweight was highest in middle-aged men, and the relative burden was highest in older adults. Resource allocation in targeted populations and specific areas to eliminate CVD and health inequities is urgently required. © 2023, Republic of China Society of Cardiology. All rights reserved.

Rice production generates a significant amount of agricultural waste. This study aimed to give results related to the existence of antioxidant phenols in agricultural waste of selected Northern Thai rice varieties. The antioxidant activities, contents of total flavonoids and phenolic compounds in the ethanolic rice husk extract were evaluated. The highest antioxidant activities were found in the variety PES1CMU, with 2,2’-azinobis-3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl as 679.66 and 4.16 mmol/(L·g) trolox equivalent, respectively, ferric reducing antioxidant power as 0.87 mmol/(L·g) Fe2+, total phenolic content as 29.90 mmol/(L·g) gallic acid and total flavonoid content as 12.16 mg/g catechin equivalent. Polyphenol compounds were identified mainly by standard polyphenols using the liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, with the highest contents of phytic acid, o-coumaric acid, naringin and kaempferol. The non-glutenous and wetland ecotypes of rice husk samples were the richest in antioxidant activities and polyphenol contents characterized by using principal component analysis. The glutenous rice husk contained higher antioxidant activities than the rest. Interestingly, quercetin is a significant phenolic compound that positively correlated with the overall antioxidant activities of rice husk. This finding will be relevant for future application of rice husk antioxidant components in the production of functional ingredients as well as for the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Stepchildren’s Dialectical Discourses of Divorced Parents’ Communication About Their New Dating Relationships with Children

ABSTRACTDivorced parents’ new dating is a sensitive yet important topic to communicate with children when necessary. Guided by relational dialectics theory, this qualitative study examined young adult stepchildren’s dialectical discourses of beliefs about how divorced parents should discuss their new dating with children, given uncertainty and potential risks within the communication process. Using the contrapuntal analysis, we analyzed text data gathered from 562 young adult stepchildren. Divorced parents’ communication about their dating with children was positively perceived as child-focused if children’s characteristics were considered, children felt reassured and prioritized, and a reciprocal conversation was implemented. However, this communication process was negatively perceived as parent-focused if it might cause harm and stress to children, was susceptive to children’s misunderstanding, and/or involved only one-sided talk. The third discourse of contingent communication, the interplay of the first two discourses, highlighted stepchildren’s sense-making of the complexity of specific contexts in the communication dilemma. We further addressed how the interplay of the multifocal discourses informed divorced parents regarding strategic decisions in sharing their dating information.
