Artificial Intelligence image recognition using self-regulation learning strategies: effects on vocabulary acquisition, learning anxiety, and learning behaviours of English language learners

ABSTRACTYoung learners’ vocabulary learning needs interaction with language input when they are engaged in an activity. Given that AI-supported image recognition technologies offer hands-on learning in authentic contexts, and that self-regulated learning (SRL) enables learners to monitor and evaluate their learning when interacting with multi-sensory experiences of the target vocabulary, this study investigated how AI image recognition technologies along with SRL affect students’ vocabulary acquisition, self-regulation, and learning anxiety in the language classroom, and further analysed students’ learning behaviours during learning. A total of 47 Grade 3 students participated. Students in the experimental group (EG) assigned to AI-supported image recognition (AI-IR) with SRL, learnt with vocabulary from realia using AI-IR with SRL. Students in the control group (CG) assigned to AI-supported optical character recognition (AI-OCR) technology with SRL, learnt with vocabulary from printed texts using AI-OCR with SRL. Results indicated that the EG students significantly outperformed the CG students in terms of vocabulary acquisition, although no significant differences were found in the two groups’ self-regulation or learning anxieties. Behavioural analysis revealed that the EG students had greater development of their self-regulation and lower learning anxiety. Lastly, suggestions and limitations are provided for further research.

Effects of design thinking on artificial intelligence learning and creativity

ABSTRACTThis study explored the effects of design thinking on the conceptual cognition of artificial intelligence (AI) learning, attitudes toward AI, idea creativity, and the product creativity of AI applications. The concept map indicated that design thinking had a significant effect on the conceptual cognition of AI learning, particularly the relational conjunctions and classes of AI concepts. However, effects of cross-linking and examples were nonsignificant. In addition, it had a significant and positive effect on learning attitudes toward AI, in particular AI input and AI processing. Moreover, design thinking significantly and positively affected the idea creativity of AI applications, particularly the effects of novelty and value. It also had a significant and positive effect on the product creativity of AI applications, particularly functionality and elaboration. However, material novelty, style, idea structure, and product creativity had no significant difference.

Due to the widespread nature of sun-related health risks, sophisticated UV monitoring systems are urgently needed. This research study introduces a cloud-based UV monitoring system with the intent of remotely tracking and analyzing UV exposure in real time. The system incorporates a network of UV sensors deployed in various locations, continuously collecting UV radiation data. These sensors are linked to a cloud system, which allows for easy sharing and processing of collected data. As a result, we're working to perfect a cutting-edge device that can monitor vitamin D absorption, measure cumulative UV exposure, and warn of impending danger. Extensive studies have demonstrated the benefits of UV exposure for both general health and protection against the newly discovered coronavirus. However, finding a happy medium is important because too much sun exposure can cause cancer, lupus flares, and cataracts. The proposed model gives users the ability to set their own daily UV exposure limits, taking into account clinically validated thresholds for various skin tones. The developed sensor module is able to measure the UV index with high precision even in bright sunlight because it closely mimics the skin erythema spectrum. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACTABSTRACTIn this study, a peer assessment-based mobile learning approach was implemented and evaluated in a vocational design certification course. A quasi-experiment was conducted to explore the impact of the proposed approach on the learning achievements and motivations of the students with active and reflective styles. It was found that the students using the peer assessment-based mobile learning approach generally learned better than those using the conventional mobile learning approach. It was also found that there were interactive effects between learning approaches and learning styles on intrinsic motivation. The students with an active learning style outperformed those with a reflective style in intrinsic motivation when conducting the peer assessment-based mobile learning. Active learning style students also had higher extrinsic motivation than those with a reflective learning style when conducting mobile learning.

Research Motivation and Objective Article 158 of the Constitution and the J.Y. Interpretation No. 450 (1998) of the University Act interpreted various freedom of teaching and university self-government principles. The Constitution and University Act allow universities to independently decide whether to offer physical education (PE) courses. PE courses must be offered in accordance with relevant laws. A decline in birth rates, university enrollment, university autonomy, and zero-credit courses have led to a reduction in compulsory PE courses. Martins et al. (2020) investigated PE in 54 countries and found that older students are less likely to engage in regular physical activity than younger students, highlighting the importance of maintaining exercise through the implementation of school-based PE courses. The present study examined the current situation and trends in the numbers of PE teachers in colleges in Taiwan following the introduction of Article No. 450. Additionally, laws, regulations, and systems were analyzed and relevant data was compiled to gain insights into trends in college-based PE courses. Literature Review The United States was the first country to include PE courses as a graduation requirement in higher education. In 1861, Amherst College began to require students to take PE courses during each year of enrollment, and several universities began to offer PE courses (Cardinal et al., 2012). By the late 1920s and early 1930s, approximately 97% of colleges and universities had PE as a requirement for graduation, and by the 1960s, 84% to 87% of schools included PE as a required course (Lumpkin & Jenkins, 1993). However, over the past three decades, in U.S. higher education, the percentage of schools that require completion of PE as a graduation requirement has declined (Hensley, 2000), and the percentage was as low as 39.55% in 2010 (Cardinal et al., 2012). Anaerobic technologies (AT) offer a sustainable approach for harnessing energy during wastewater treatment. Despite their numerous advantages, significant challenges remain. Under stressful conditions, the accumulation of ammonia and Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) within AT can lead to a decline in its performance. One promising strategy to enhance the performance of sick anaerobic units is the introduction of Syntrophic Fatty Acid Oxidizing Bacteria (SFAOB), reinforcing the crucial partnership between SFAOB and hydrogenotrophic methanogenic (HM) organisms. However, isolating and enriching SFAOB populations is challenging due to thermodynamic limitations. To address this issue, Bio-electrochemical systems (BES) emerge as a valuable tool for SFAOB enrichment. BES can also play a vital role in removing dissolved ammonium from AT, preventing its toxic build-up within the system. This perspective primarily focuses on the role of BES in augmenting the performance of AT. Employing BES as a performance-enhancing solution holds promise for ensuring the sustainable recovery of impaired anaerobic units. © 2023 The Authors

The fish rots from the head down: a test of the trickle-down model of abusive supervision

Purpose: A major paradigm shift focusing on the dark side of leadership has generated lots of concern for organizations as leadership has cascading effects on employees’ behaviour. This study aims to understand negative behaviours in the organization as a system of interrelated interaction initiated from the top which trickles down to employees. Design/methodology/approach: Drawing on the theories of social exchange and norms of reciprocity, social learning and displaced aggression, this study models how and when abusive supervision relates to employees’ task performance. The model is empirically tested and extended to cover mediation and moderation processes. Drawing data from 218 bank supervisors and employees, this study uses the structural equation modelling to analyse a trickle-down model of abusive supervision. Findings: Results from multi-waved, multi-sourced data indicated a mediating effect on the abusive supervision–performance relationships and provided support for employees’ guilt proneness and emotional dissonance as moderators. Overall, the results provided support for a moderated mediation relationship in the trickle-down model. Originality/value: This study provides new knowledge into the potential boundary conditions of employees’ guilt proneness and emotional dissonance in affecting the relationship between abusive supervision, counterproductive work behaviour and task performance. © 2020, Hannah Vivian Osei, Felicity Asiedu-Appiah and Perpetual Akosuah Anyimaduah Amoah.

In order to provide a more flexible wireless rechargeable sensor network, a charger and a self-propelled vehicle are integrated into one vehicle in recent years. The path selection problem of mobile chargers can be formulated as the well-known travelling salesman problem. Therefore, metaheuristic algorithms can be applied to solve the planning problem of mobile chargers. Some researches presented planning methods based on the Simulated Annealing (SA) and Tabu Search (TS) algorithms but the results are not satisfied. In this paper, we not only design a novel encoding approach but also the fitness function for proposing an efficient planning algorithm based on the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed ACO-based algorithm achieves a shorter planning path for a longer network lifetime compared with that generated by the SA and TS algorithms. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Barriers to Adoption of Commercial Green Buildings in India: A Review

The global construction sector accounts for 13.2% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP). It not only contributes to the economic growth engine of the world but also climate changes due to its high energy footprint. Sustainable buildings have the potential to reduce the adverse impacts of the construction industry, but their adoption is slow due to hindrances. The aim of this paper is to study literature on barriers to green building adoption to date and highlight the overlapping and unique barriers specific to India in comparison to a few prominent countries, and provide solutions and recommendations for future research. The methodology has been an extensive literature review of the barriers to green building (GB) adoption. The key findings, namely barriers, were classified under economic, governmental, organizational and social perception, information, technology and material categories. Barriers unique to India and a few other developing countries are an extension of project schedules, lack of research and developmental works, lack of public motivation, poor building code enforcement, high payback period, uncertain supply of green materials, improper implementation of policy framework and performance of green building technologies (GBT’s). The GB construction sector is fragmented around the world. Even the GB definition is not the same across the globe although the environmental aspect is the same. Similarly, there are unique and overlapping challenges in GB adoption globally. Buildings in usage perspectives can be classified into residential and non-residential. This study looks only at non-residential GBs due to their homogenous nature. There is a dearth of specific studies related to the adoption of GBs in India.
