NASA recognizes human systems integration (HSI) as part of the overall systems engineering and acquisition strategy for space systems. The Lunar Gateway program is implementing HSI technical and management process across the lifecycle of the mission, as required by NPR 7123.1C NASA systems Engineering Processes and Requirements, and led by the Gateway HSI team as required by NPR 8705.2C human-Rating Requirements for Space systems, now HEOMD-003 Crewed Deep Space systems human Rating Certification Requirements and Standards for NASA Missions. NASA has been using HSI principles for many years and has applied them to many of its previous human spaceflight programs. As NASA returns to the Moon in a more sustainable manner, the Gateway program is maturing the application of HSI by implementing it more visibly as part of Artemis, with guidance from the NASA/SP-20210010952 NASA HSI Handbook. This paper discusses how HSI is being implemented in the Gateway program, challenges faced with its implementation during the development phase, and strategies/approaches used to overcome those. The paper also covers HSI implementation for flight systems, vehicle processing, and interfaces across the six identified NASA HSI Domains: human factors engineering, operations, safety, training, maintainability and supportability, habitability and environment. The goal is to provide an overview of the implementation process of HSI in the Gateway program as an example for other programs/Projects/Missions that are looking to implement HSI. © 2022 by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). Eating behaviors in sailors of the United States Navy: Meal-to-sleep intervals

Background: Due to their long workdays and erratic watch schedules, sailors on United States Navy (USN) ships often eat meals close to their bedtime, which may contribute to sleep disruption. Aim: To assess the duration of meal-to-sleep (M-S) intervals in relation to timing of sailor workdays and watch schedules. Methods: Longitudinal field assessment of USN sailors performing their underway duties (N = 234). Participants completed questionnaires, wore actigraphs, and completed activity logs. Results: Approximately 35% of M-S intervals were <3 h in duration. M-S interval duration was associated with watchstanding status (p < 0.001) and the number of sections in the watchstanding schedule (p < 0.001). Sailors on the two-section watch schedule had, on average, the shortest M-S intervals (55 min) compared to sailors on three- or four-section watchbills (similar to 4 h) and to non-watchstanders (4.85 h). Conclusion: Sailors on two-section watchbills often eat quite close to bedtime. To provide appropriate recommendations regarding healthy dietary patterns, we will continue assessing dietary behaviors and food choices of sailors while underway, especially as they relate to sailor work hours, circadian rhythms, and sleep practices.

In January 2018 the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG) issued its third edition of the Global Exploration Roadmap (GER). It reflects the consensus of ISECG space agencies on a common strategy and roadmap for expanding human presence into the Solar System, with the surface of Mars as the long-term goal. After rapid advances in agency lunar planning for human exploration, corresponding science goals and technology development strategies, the GER was augmented in 2020 with a Lunar Surface Exploration Scenario Update ('GER Supplement'). Since then, many ISECG space agencies have intensified and accelerated lunar exploration plans. These rapidly evolving exploration plans, coupled with several new agency participants in the ISECG, necessitated an update to the Lunar Supplement. This new 2022 GER Supplement refines lunar objectives and includes the newly joined ISECG organisations and updates to agency lunar exploration plans. It also includes a refined set of common objectives for a sustainable lunar surface exploration campaign and the updated Lunar Surface Exploration Scenario. The scenario describes the architecture elements and the exploration campaign that progressively meet the lunar surface exploration objectives serving as preparation for missions to Mars and for further activities on the Moon. The update elaborates and consolidates the operational concept for the near-term Phase 2 preparing sustainable lunar exploration. Key elements for achieving higher levels of sustainability are longer surface missions by surviving the lunar night, and the introduction of reusable elements. The 2022 GER Supplement also includes a new chapter, which characterizes lunar scientific priorities enabled by exploration initiatives. The Crew Endurance Team at the Naval Postgraduate School led a 3-year project to develop and deliver crew endurance and sleep hygiene training to support the US Navy’s implementation of circadian-based watchbills. As part of this effort, 16 training sessions were delivered to 362 active-duty service members (ADSMs) of the USN, including senior Navy leaders (n=249), prospective commandingIexecutive officers (PCOIPXOs) (n=30) at the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) and students (n=83) attending SWOS Department Head School. Overall, responses from all audiences were positive indicating a high level of satisfaction with the training. We identified the need to expand two parts of the training: stimulants and sleep-promoting medications, and tips for sleeping in military environments. We will continue to tailor the training to the specific needs of ADSMs. We continue to train military audiences to increase awareness of the critical importance of sleep for operational performance and resilience. © 2021 by human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Significant work has been completed recently at NASA's Johnson Space Center in the Space Suit and Crew Survival systems Branch to design and mature an advanced exploration Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA) architecture. This effort culminated in the exploration Extra-vehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) space suit, which was completed in 2022 and tested extensively through 2023, including human performance, cycle life performance and thermal vacuum testing. An overview of the xEMU design and test campaign is provided, as well as its value as the government reference design supporting the transition to EVA commercial services for the Artemis program. Lastly, a development roadmap is discussed which outlines NASA's identified strategy to enable the next generation of exploration EVA hardware for sustaining-class lunar and Mars missions. Current work environments have undergone a noticeable shift towards higher cognitive demands and increased involvement in multitask performance. It has therefore become crucial to investigate the levels of mental workload experienced by operators. Simulated cognitive multitasking, with varying workload intensity, duration and work order, was tested in 18 volunteers to determine its impact on task performance, perceived workload, galvanic skin response;GSR, and cortisol levels in sweat and saliva. The results showed that as workload intensity increased, there was a concurrent increase in perceived workload and a significant negative impact on task performance. As time progressed, there was a notable increase in performance. Differences in GSR can be observed based on time on task and order of stressor levels delivered to the participants. Preliminary results of cortisol levels in sweat and saliva showed distinct trends in relation to workload intensity. © 2023 IEEE.

Sex differences in perceptions of sleep inertia following nighttime awakenings

Study Objectives: The influence of biological sex on sleep inertia symptoms is currently unknown. We investigated the role of sex differences in the subjective experience and objective cognitive manifestation of sleep inertia following nighttime awakenings. Methods: Thirty-two healthy adults (16 female, 25.91 ± 5.63 years) completed a 1-week at-home study with one experimental night during which sleep was measured by polysomnography and participants were awakened during their habitual sleep time. Participants completed a psychomotor vigilance task, Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), visual analog mood scales, and a descending subtraction task (DST) prior to sleep (baseline) and at 2, 12, 22, and 32 min after awakening. A series of mixed-effects models with Bonferroni-corrected post hoc tests were used to examine the main effects of test bout and sex, and their interaction, with a random effect of participant, and order of wake-up and sleep history as covariates. Results: All outcomes except for percent correct on the DST showed a significant main effect of test bout, with worse performance after waking compared to baseline (all ps < .003). Significant effects of sex (p = .002) and sex × test bout (p = .01;R²_M = 0.49, R²_C = 0.69) were observed for KSS, with females reporting a greater increase in sleepiness from baseline to after waking compared to males. Conclusions: These results suggest that while females reported feeling sleepier than males following nighttime awakenings, their cognitive performance was comparable. Future research is needed to determine whether perceptions of sleepiness influence decision-making during the transition from sleep to wakefulness. © 2023 The authors.

This project was designed to support the US Navy’s (USN) implementation of circadian- based watchbills by providing guidance on sleep management and shipboard practices which support crew endurance. In the first two years of the three-year effort, we identified specific training needs and developed instructor-led materials. We delivered the training to two audiences all active duty members of the US Navy or US Marine Corps: senior leaders and entry-level to mid-level personnel (N=353 participants; 15 training sessions total). Following the training, we administered a short questionnaire to obtain individual feedback. Responses from both audiences showed a high level of satisfaction with the training. Future efforts will focus on improving the training materials, further assessing training, and developing additional materials designed for specific military audiences at increased risk of insufficient sleep.
