The shift to online education, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has introduced challenges in monitoring student engagement, an essential aspect of effective teaching. In response, real-time student monitoring interfaces have emerged as potential tools to aid instructors, yet their efficacy has not been thoroughly examined. Addressing this gap, we conducted a controlled experiment with 20 instructors examining the impact of engagement cues (presence versus absence) and student engagement levels (high versus low) on instructors’ monitoring effectiveness, teaching behavior adjustments, and cognitive load in online classes. Our findings underscored the fundamental benefits of student engagement monitoring interfaces for improving monitoring quality and effectiveness. Furthermore, our study highlighted the critical need for customizable interfaces that could balance the informational utility of engagement cues with the associated cognitive load and psychological stress on instructors. These insights may offer design implications for the design of future student engagement monitoring interfaces.

This study presents a dual-mode interface design concept for social media platforms aimed at reducing social comparison in health-related content among Korean MZ (Millennials and Gen-Z) users. The proposed "Inspiration" and "Reality" modes allow users to toggle between curated, idealized posts and more realistic, candid content. This approach aims to alleviate negative psychological effects, such as decreased self-esteem and body dissatisfaction. The lack of reliable, personalized information often complicates sexual violence survivors' support-seeking. Recently, there is an emerging approach to conversational information systems for support-seeking of sexual violence survivors, featuring personalization with wide availability and anonymity. However, a single best solution might not exist as sexual violence survivors have different needs and purposes in seeking support channels. To better envision conversational support-seeking systems for sexual violence survivors, we explore personalization trade-offs in designing such information systems. We implement a high-fidelity prototype dialogue-based information system through four design workshop sessions with three professional caregivers and interviewed with four self-identified survivors using our prototype. We then identify two forms of personalization trade-offs for conversational support-seeking systems: (1) specificity and sensitivity in understanding users and (2) relevancy and inclusiveness in providing information. To handle these trade-offs, we propose a reversed approach that starts from designing information and inclusive tailoring that considers unspecified needs, respectively. © 2022 ACM.

This paper investigates three kinds of interactions for a friction based virtual music instrument. The sound synthesis model consists of a bank of mass-spring-dampers individually excited via rubbing. A nonlinear static friction model capable of reproducing the characteristic stick-slip phenomenon observed in frictional interaction is employed, allowing for dynamic variation of the sliding friction. The different controls developed allow for gradually increasing the interplay between performer and instrument. The key excitation parameters, e.g., the rubbing velocity and the rubbing normal force are controlled using three different interfaces: a standard mouse, a Sensel Morph, and a 3D Systems Touch X. The Sensel Morph is a touchpad with pressure sensitivity, allowing for a natural exertion of the normal force;the 3D Systems Touch X is a haptic device that renders both resistance to the applied normal force, as well as the stick-slip motion resulting from the friction interaction. A preliminary user study aiming to compare the experience of performing with the different interfaces was carried out. The results indicate that the haptic feedback provides a more intuitive and enjoyable experience. However, extra features do not necessarily improve the user interaction, as the results suggest a preference for the mouse over the Sensel. Copyright: © 2022 Marius George Onofrei et al.

Family technology use can create or amplify conflict in parents' relationships - we found four key factors that contribute to this issue. We conducted a probe and interview study with eight sets of parents, to explore how and why technology use might cause conflict in their relationships. This paper presents data from two particular sets of parents to illustrate our findings. In doing so, it complements existing work that primarily focuses on parent-child relationships, and contributes to a more complete understanding of how family technology use can affect family dynamics. We also suggest directions for further work to address this issue of conflict between parents, associated with their family's use of technology. © 2021 ACM.

ExplainitAI: When do we trust artificial intelligence? The influence of content and explainability in a cross-cultural comparison

This study investigates cross-cultural differences in the perception of AI-driven chatbots between Germany and South Korea, focusing on topic dependency and explainability. Using a custom AI chat interface, ExplainitAI, we systematically examined these factors with quota-based samples from both countries (N = 297). Our findings revealed significant cultural distinctions: Korean participants exhibited higher trust, more positive user experience ratings, and more favorable perception of AI compared to German participants. Additionally, topic dependency was a key factor, with participants reporting lower trust in AI when addressing societally debated topics (e.g., migration) versus health or entertainment topics. These perceptions were further influenced by interactions among cultural context, content domains, and explainability conditions. The result highlights the importance of integrating cultural and contextual nuances into the design of AI systems, offering actionable insights for the development of culturally adaptive and explainable AI tailored to diverse user needs and expectations across domains. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies advance, the possibility of developing virtual agents capable of mimicking human beings is increasing. Furthermore, AI techniques applicable to mimicking certain features of a specific person (e.g., facial expression, voice, motion) are becoming more sophisticated. Although the HCI community has explored how to design or develop AI agents mimicking a real person, limited studies on mimicking someone’s text-based behavior shown in the instant messaging exist. This study investigates the features that make users perceive text-based agents as people they know in reality. On top of the previous efforts of designing human-like virtual agents, our work suggests design guidelines for applying the persona of the real person (PRP) to text-based agents.

Flexible sensors are renowned for their rapid responsiveness, high flexibility, and outstanding mechanical properties, making them ideal for applications in wearable devices, sports and health monitoring, and human-machine interfaces. To enhance the sensing performance of these flexible sensors, researchers have drawn inspiration from nature, creating various bionic microstructures. However, these structures often manifest in the macroscopic form of thin films, which do little to improve impact resistance and joint protection. In response, this work achieves a highly sensitive and impact-resistant pressure sensor by integrating bionic principles at both micro and macro levels. Specifically, at the micro level, a muscle-like hydrogel system consisting of MXene nanosheets incorporated into the double network of polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate matrix is selected. At the macro level, the bionic prototypes of mimosa leaves and durian spikes with good energy absorption structure, together with octopus’ sucker with good adsorption capacity are selected, and the synergistic construction of the three structures is realized through 3D printing methods. The obtained sensor has an appropriate response range, sensitivity and stability. More importantly, the displacement deformation of the hydrogel can be reduced by 91.22%, while its adhesion strength can be increased by 57.5% compared to the unstructured hydrogel. As a proof-of-concept, the proposed bionic flexible sensor can be used to monitor the motion status of the human ankle joint in real-time, thereby assisting users in making real-time judgments on gait health. © 2024, The Authors. As Queer human-computer interaction (HCI) becomes an established part of the larger field, both in terms of research on and with queer populations and in terms of employing queering theories and methods, the role of queer researchers has become a timely topic of discussion. However, these discussions have largely centered around member-researcher status and positionality when working with queer populations. Based on insights gathered at multiple ACM events over the past two years, we identified two pressing issues: (1) we need to better support queer people doing HCI research not specific to queer populations, and (2) we need to identify how to best support member-researchers in leading Queer HCI while including collaborators beyond the queer community. This Special Interest Group (SIG) aims to directly address these challenges by convening a broad community of queer researchers and allies, working not only on explicitly-queer topics but across a broad range of HCI topics. © 2021 Owner/Author.

Background- With the rapid development of digital and intelligent information systems, display of visual information in interfaces has become an important challenge in the field of human-computer interaction. Objective- We propose a method for the optimization of information interaction interfaces from error-cognition through the mapping of information characteristics. Method- A mapping method of matrix description is adopted to analyze the association properties between error-cognition sets and design information sets. Results- Based on the mapping relationship between the domains of error-cognition and design information, a cross-correlational analysis is carried out between error-cognition and design information. Conclusion- We obtain the relationship matrix between the error-cognition of correlation between design information and the degree of importance among design information. Application- Taking the task interface of a warfare navigation display as an example, error factors and the features of design information are extracted.
