This position paper describes the human-computer interaction (HCI) field studies component of the multidisciplinary Patient Records Enhancement Project (PREP). PREP seeks to understand variability of data found in primary care electronic records, in particular the balance between coded data and doctor's 'free text' notes. HCI fieldwork will establish variables that affect recording practices. In field studies we observe and record data recording practices in general practice (GP) surgeries, interview staff, video consultations with real patients and video consultations with standardized patients (played by medical actors). By standardizing patients we can compare the impact of other variables: different doctors, in different surgeries, using different e-health systems. Our early findings suggest that variability is due to a complex web of reasons, driven by personal, contextual and organizational processes. Findings from thematic analysis will result in design implications for studies by epidemiologists and public health researchers, design of NHS training and work processes, and design of electronic health record interfaces.

Designing to support motivation is an increasingly important issue, especially as pervasive technologies are used to facilitate various healthy behaviour changes. There are many motivation theories but these do not map specifically to inform design. In 'Motivating Mobility' we explore the lived experiences of motivation of people with stroke, in order to design rehabilitation technologies. Motivation varies between people, between contexts and over time and can be 'difficult to express', particularly for those with communication problems. We describe development of a theoretically based toolkit, principled in both content and form, and using multiple modes of communication, aimed at gathering motivational requirements in order to inspire design. We show use of the toolkit, discuss the rich data collected and reflect on how well the approach works and ties requirements, via their elicitation tool, back to theory. This toolkit has potential to inform design for motivational effect in similar pervasive health applications.

Gaze visualizations represent an effective way for gaining fast insights into eye tracking data. Current approaches do not adequately support eye tracking studies for three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments. Hence, we propose a set of advanced gaze visualization techniques for supporting gaze behavior analysis in such environments. Similar to commonly used gaze visualizations for two-dimensional stimuli (e.g., images and websites), we contribute advanced 3D scan paths and 3D attentional maps. In addition, we introduce a models of interest timeline depicting viewed models, which can be used for displaying scan paths in a selected time segment. A prototype toolkit is also discussed which combines an implementation of our proposed techniques. Their potential for facilitating eye tracking studies in virtual environments was supported by a user study among eye tracking and visualization experts. © 2010 ACM.

Multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) seem to have great potential in education. Current educational uses of MUVEs seem to exploit them more as group interaction platforms and less as worlds where users learn by interacting and modifying the environment in a constructivist approach. There is also a need for systematic research efforts that will lead to guidelines and principles for designing and evaluating effective learning activities in MUVEs. This paper presents preliminary empirical results from an exploratory study with university students. A collaborative problem-based physics learning activity was designed in Second Life® (SL), following a constructivist approach. Students (n=30) collaborated “in-world” in pairs assisted by a tutor, in order to solve the problem. Data were gathered using a questionnaire and session recordings. The study focused on issues related to educational environment design, collaboration and instruction. Results indicate that satisfactory, engaging and effective collaborative learning activities can be realized in SL.

The elderly represent a valid group of users who can potentially benefit greatly from engaging with technology, such as healthcare systems or playing digital games. Yet, less attention has been given to the significance of senior citizens as technology users, as compared to the common younger population. In an effort to fill in the gap, this workshop aims to investigate the design of technology for senior citizens. To provide for more focused, thus more productive discussion, we will use elderly mobile phone games as a case in point here. The overarching objective is to understand what can help to make for better and more meaningful use of interactive applications and technology by the elderly, for instance, games on the mobile phone. © 2010 Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

This monograph is directed at researchers and developers who are designing the next generation of web search user interfaces, by focusing on the techniques and visualizations that allow users to interact with and have control over their findings. Search is one of the keys to the Web's success. The elegant way in which search results are returned has been well researched and is usually remarkably effective. However, the body of work produced by decades of research into information retrieval continues to grow rapidly and so it has become hard to synthesize the current state-of-the-art to produce a search interface that is both highly functional, but not cluttered and distracting. Further, recent work has shown that there is substantial room for improving the support provided to users who are exhibiting more exploratory forms of search, including when users may need to learn, discover, and understand novel or complex topics. Overall, there is a recognized need for search systems to provide effective user experiences that do more than simply return results. With the aim of producing more effective search interfaces, human computer interaction researchers and web designers have been developing novel interactions and features that enable users to conveniently visualize, parse, manipulate, and organize their Web search results. For instance, while a simple set of results may produce specific information (e.g., the capital of Peru), other methods may let users see and explore the contexts of their requests for information (more about the country, city, and nearby attractions), or the properties that associate groups of information assets (grouping hotels, restaurants, and attractions by their type, district, or price). Other techniques support information-seeking processes that may last weeks or months or may even require collaboration between multiple searchers. This paper presents a new approach to provide two-dimensional directional information mediated by the sense of touch. The basic idea was to test whether one-dimensional stimuli provided by a counterclockwise (CCW) and clockwise (CW) rotating leadscrew of a friction-based fingertip stimulator prototype can be perceived as two-dimensional directional information. Ten participants were asked to indicate the perceived direction of the stimuli in left-right (i.e., mediolateral) and forward-backward (i.e., anteroposterior) dimensions. The properties of 12 stimuli were varied, for example, by rotation direction (i.e., CCW and CW) and stimulus symmetry (i.e., symmetrical and asymmetrical). The results showed that left and right directions were perceived in accuracies of ges 90%. Forward and backward directions could be perceived above the chance level. Based on the results we suggest that the concept could be used successfully in presenting at least three directions (i.e., left, right, and backward). For navigation applications three directions would, in many cases, be sufficient, but by means of further studies it might be possible to provide information of all four main directions.

Thioredoxin-1 expression levels in rat hippocampal neurons in moderate hypobaric hypoxia

Previous studies have demonstrated that preconditioning (PC) with three sessions of moderate hypoxia significantly increases the expression of the antioxidant protein thioredoxin-1 (Trx-1) in the rat hippocampus by 3 h after subsequent acute severe hypoxia as compared with non-preconditioned animals. However, it remained unclear whether this increase in Trx-1 accumulation during PC is induced before severe hypoxia or is a modification of the response to severe hypoxia. This question was addressed in the present investigation using experiments on 12 adult male Wistar rats with studies of Trx-1 expression after PC without subsequent severe hypoxia. Immunocytochemical studies were performed 3 and 24 h after three episodes of moderate hypobaric hypoxia (three sessions of 2 h at 360 mmHg with 24-h intervals). Immunoreactivity to Trx-1 24 h after the last session was significantly decreased in neurons in all the areas of the hippocampus studied (CA1, CA2, CA3, and the dentate gyrus). Immunoreactivity in CA3 was also decreased 3 h after hypoxia. These results provide evidence that moderate preconditioning hypoxia itself not only does not increase, but even significantly decreases Trx-1 expression. Thus, increases in Trx-1 contents in the hippocampus of preconditioned animals after severe hypoxia are not associated with the accumulation of this protein during PC, but with a PC-induced modification of the reaction to severe hypoxia. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, in cooperation with Stanford University's Department of computer Science, was pleased to present the 2009 Spring Symposium Series, held Monday through Wednesday, March 23-25, 2009, at Stanford University. The titles of the nine symposia were Agents That Learn from human Teachers, Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems, Experimental Design for Real- World Systems, human Behavior Modeling, Intelligent Event Processing, Intelligent Narrative Technologies II, Learning by Reading and Learning to Read, Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0, and Technosocial Predictive Analytics. The goal of the Agents That Learn from human Teachers symposium was to investigate how we can enable software and robotics agents to leam from real-time interaction with an everyday human partner. The aim of the Benchmarking of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning Systems symposium was to initiate the development of a problem repository in the field of qualitative spatial and temporal reasoning and identify a graded set of challenges for future midterm and long-term research. The Experimental Design symposium discussed the challenges of evaluating AI systems. The human Behavior Modeling symposium explored reasoning methods for understanding various aspects of human behavior, especially in the context of designing intelligent systems that interact with humans. The Intelligent Event Processing symposium discussed the need for more Al-based approaches in event pro-cessing and defined a kind of research agenda for the field, coined as intelligent complex event processing (iCEP). The Intelligent Narrative Technologies IIAAAI symposium discussed innovations, progress, and novel techniques in the research domain.
