This study investigates the effectiveness of the application of Virtual Reality Training (VRT) in the treatment of Communication Apprehension (CA). The participants were thirty undergraduate volunteer students enrolled at the university level. Virtual reality software and hardware were used to create a virtual auditorium scene for this training. Over five sessions, participants were subjected to virtual public speaking scenarios of varying intensity. Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD) scale was used to measure the participants' anxiety levels. The average level of anxiety reported during post-test was significantly less than that of the pre-test. The preliminary results indicated that VRT could be used as an effective method for reducing CA in clients and allow them to become involved in discussions and presentations more comfortably.

The present aim was to develop a fully automatic feature-based method for expression-invariant detection of facial landmarks from still facial images. It is a continuation of our earlier work where we found that some certain muscle contractions made a deteriorating effect on the feature-based landmark detection especially in the lower face. Taking into account this crucial facial behavior, we introduced improvements to the method that allowed facial landmarks to be fully automatically detected from expressive images of high complexity. In the method, information on local oriented edges was utilized to compose edge maps of the image at two levels of resolution. The landmark candidates resulted from this step were further verified by edge orientation matching. We used knowledge on face geometry to find the proper spatial arrangement of the candidates. The results obtained demonstrated a high overall performance of the method while testing a wide range official displays.

Foreground segmentation with moving camera is a challenging task due to the presence of parallax effect, registration error, scene variations in out door, and etc. Currently, background modeling techniques either assumes correspondence among pixels in concurrent frames or do not model it explicitly. The contribution by this paper is in two folds. First, we achieve a new background model by introducing correspondence into it. Second, we pose foreground segmentation and correspondence estimation as a labeling problem. Spatial context is enforced in shape of tree structure and global optimal label at each node is computed using dynamic programming. Finally, based on the optimal correspondence, background model is updated. Resultantly, parallax effect and registration error are reduced significantly. Recent research suggests design pre-patterns, structured collections of evidence-based research and design knowledge, provide a useful resource for design activities in emerging application domains. This paper extends previous research by exploring the impact of pre-patterns and tools to support pre-pattern exploration for the domain of ubiquitous computing in the home. We conducted an empirical study of 44 designers engaged in a two hour concentrated brainstorming and design task for the home of the future. Our results show pre-patterns are an easily adopted resource for designers that can impact even the earliest of design activities. We also provide insights for future development of pre-patterns based on designer feedback. Copyright 2006 ACM.
