Accurately predicting generic protein-protein binding affinities (PPBA) is essential to analyze the outputs of protein docking and may help infer real status of cellular protein-protein interaction sub-networks. However, accurate PPBA prediction is still extremely challenging. Machine learning methods are promising to address this problem. We propose a two-layer support vector regression (TLSVR) model to implicitly capture binding contributions that are hard to explicitly model. The TLSVR circumvents both the descriptor compatibility problem and the need for problematic modeling assumptions. Input features for TLSVR in first layer are scores of 2209 interacting atom pairs within each distance bin. The base SVRs are combined by the second layer to infer the final affinities. Leave-one-out validation on our heterogeneous data shows that the TLSVR method obtains a very good result of R=0.80 and SD=1.32 with real affinities. Comparison experiment further demonstrates that TLSVR is superior to the previous state-of-art methods in predicting generic PPBA. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a prototype of an authoring tool to allow users to collaboratively build, annotate, manage, share and reuse collections of distributed resources from the World Wide Web. This extends on the Walden's Path project's work to help educators bring resources found on the World Wide Web into a linear contextualized structure. The introduction of collaborative authoring feature fosters collaborative learning activities through social interaction among participants, where participants can coauthor paths in groups. Besides, the prototype supports path sharing, branching and reusing;specifically, individual participant can contribute to the group with private collections of knowledge resources;paths completed by group can be shared among group members, such that participants can tailor, extend, reorder and/or replace nodes to have sub versions of shared paths for different information needs. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Summary form only given. Although Multi-touch devices have become common in the consumer world, users have sacrificed the tactile feedback afforded by physical buttons. The Bristol interaction and Graphics group has been exploring various technical solutions to create the next generation of touch interfaces that support multi-point haptic feedback as well as dynamic allocation of views to different users. In this talk I will present UltraHaptics a multi-point haptic feedback system that allows users to experience haptic feedback simultaneously in multiple locations on an interactive surface. This feedback is created in midair - so users don't have to touch or hold any device to experience it. Another system I will be talking about it PiVOT, a tabletop system where users can come together and view shared content or by leaning forward can get personalised views that are only visible from their particular view-point. This talk will present our recent research endeavors in this direction and present some design challenges.

In this work, we present novel warping algorithms for full 2D pixel-grid deformations for face recognition. Due to high variation in face appearance, face recognition is considered a very difficult task, especially if only a single reference image, for example a mug-shot, per face is available. Usually model-based approaches with additional training data are used to cope with several types of variation occurring in facial imaging. Image warping contrarily yields a distance measure which is invariant with regard to several types of variation. This allows for precise recognition even using only very few reference observations. Due to the computationally complex problem of optimal 2D warping, pseudo-2D warping-based approaches in the past represented strong approximations of the original problem, and were mainly successful on data with low variability or rectified images. We propose a novel 2D warping method which is globally optimal and makes no prior assumtions on the data variability besides two-dimensional smootheness constraints which both avoid local mirroring and gaps and significantly speed up the optimization. Furthermore, we show that occlusion handling is imperative to obtain smooth warpings in a variety of domains. We evaluate our novel algorithm on various well known databases, such as the AR-Face and CMU-PIE database, and provide a detailed comparison to existing warping approaches. We show that by using simple relative 2D constraints, strong local features and a kernel, which is robust w.r.t. occlusions, our computationally complex approaches outperform state-of-the-art results for recognizing faces under varying expressions, occlusions and poses. Most interestingly, we achieve higher accuracy using fewer training instances per class compared to methods learning a model of the 3D shape. © 2011 IEEE.

We examined visual search performance using 52-cm liquid-crystal (LCD) and cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays. Twenty-four subjects searched for navy tactical display symbols on a map background. When display clutter was low (few symbols), there was a CRT advantage for off-axis viewing, but this advantage disappeared as the number of symbols increased.

Citizen science projects can collect a wealth of scientific data, but that data is only helpful if it is actually used. While previous citizen science research has mostly focused on designing effective capture interfaces and incentive mechanisms, in this paper we explore the application of HCI methods to ensure that the data itself is useful. To provide a focus for this exploration we designed and implemented Creek Watch, an iPhone application and website that allow volunteers to report information about waterways in order to aid water management programs. Working with state and local officials and private groups involved in water monitoring, we conducted a series of contextual inquiries to uncover what data they wanted, what data they could immediately use, and how to most effectively deliver that data to them. We iteratively developed the Creek Watch application and website based on our findings and conducted evaluations of it with both contributors and consumers of water data, including scientists at the city water resources department. Our study reveals that the data collected is indeed useful for their existing practices and is already in use in water and trash management programs. Our results suggest the application of HCI methods to design the data for the end users is just as important as their use in designing the user interface. Copyright 2011 ACM.

For robots to get integrated in daily tasks assisting humans, robot-human interactions will need to reach a level of fluency close to that of human-human interactions. In this paper we address the fluency of robot-human hand-overs. From an observational study with our robot HERB, we identify the key problems with a baseline hand-over action. We find that the failure to convey the intention of handing over causes delays in the transfer, while the lack of an intuitive signal to indicate timing of the hand-over causes early, unsuccessful attempts to take the object. We propose to address these problems with the use of spatial contrast, in the form of distinct hand-over poses, and temporal contrast, in the form of unambiguous transitions to the hand-over pose. We conduct a survey to identify distinct hand-over poses, and determine variables of the pose that have most communicative potential for the intent of handing over. We present an experiment that analyzes the effect of the two types of contrast on the fluency of hand-overs. We find that temporal contrast is particularly useful in improving fluency by eliminating early attempts of the human.
