We briefly describe the design of a course on "Systems Analysis and Process Innovation", focusing especially on its project assignments. Students are introduced to process modeling and data modeling, followed by i∗ and Val-ue Network modeling. In their project assignments, students apply these model-ing techniques to real organizational settings to analyze an as-is situation and to explore to-be alternatives. A distinctive feature in the design of the project as-signments is that student teams split into 2 sub-teams in which each sub-team uses a different modeling technique to analyze the same domain setting. After each sub-team has separately completed its own work, the two sub-teams then compare their results for the domain problem setting, and more importantly, contrast the strengths and limitations of the two modeling approaches based on their project experience.

human engagement is at the heart of every interactive technology. However, a concrete framework for synergizing the capabilities of humans and technologies to allow fully engaging interactions to happen is yet to be developed. We posit that such a framework should be grounded in a deeper understanding of human nature (e.g., mind-body relations), which in the field of HCI has primarily been built upon the Western philosophies. There are scattered, underexplored Eastern philosophies (e.g., Yijing, Zen) that may provide new lens and tools to analyze how humans interact with resources in their environments, including technological artefacts. Discussions of leveraging and possibly integrating Eastern and Western insights for human engagement studies will be an exciting and a radical forum for the HCI community.

Nowadays, we are witnessing a paradigm shift from traditional monolithic software systems to distributed solutions where the whole computation is partitioned among various modules that can be also located in different geographic locations. Such a change has been surely fostered by the continuous development of the network infrastructures but, more effectively, by the need to easily access information distributed almost everywhere on the planet. In this context the Service Oriented Computing (SOC) has emerged as one of the leading approaches for both the design and implementation of distributed applications. The key concepts of this paradigm are the idea of service, an independent software module that performs certain operations, and the possibility to seamlessly combine such modules in order to offer more sophisticated functionalities. In this paper, after analyzing the main characteristics that made the SOC paradigm a so widespread solution to create a framework for application-to-application interaction, we discuss, as a concrete use case, the development of a software system aimed at helping farmers in Sri Lanka to improve the quality of their cultivations and related earnings.

NTT and its research partners are participating in the "Can a robot get into the University of Tokyo?" project run by the National Institute of Informatics, which involves tackling English exams. The artificial intelligence system we developed took a mock test in 2014 and achieved a better-than-human-average score for the first time. This was a notable achievement since English exams require English knowledge and also common sense knowledge that humans take for granted but that computers do not necessarily possess. Grading the Severity of Mispronunciations in CAPT Based on Statistical Analysis and Computational Speech Perception

computer-aided pronunciation training（CAPT） technologies enable the use of automatic speech recognition to detect mispronunciations in second language（L2） learners＇ speech. In order to further facilitate learning, we aim to develop a principle-based method for generating a gradation of the severity of mispronunciations. This paper presents an approach towards gradation that is motivated by auditory perception. We have developed a computational method for generating a perceptual distance（PD） between two spoken phonemes. This is used to compute the auditory confusion of native language（L1）. PD is found to correlate well with the mispronunciations detected in CAPT system for Chinese learners of English,i.e., L1 being Chinese（Mandarin and Cantonese） and L2 being US English. The results show that auditory confusion is indicative of pronunciation confusions in L2 learning. PD can also be used to help us grade the severity of errors（i.e.,mispronunciations that confuse more distant phonemes are more severe） and accordingly prioritize the order of corrective feedback generated for the learners.

There are many sets of guidelines concerning the accessibility of the web for older adults, but little empirical evidence from studies with older people to support their recommendations. In addition, all the recommendations apply to text in languages using the Latin alphabet. This study investigated the effects of text color and background color on the performance and preferences of younger and older adults on webpages in the Thai language. There were 18 Thai younger participants (19 - 29 years) and 18 Thai older participants (59 - 70 years). There were three combinations of text color and color (black text on white background, white text on black background, and sepia text on off-white background). The text and background color combinations failed to have any significant effects on the performance measures of task completion rate or time spent skim reading webpages. However, for the preference measure, there was a significant difference between combinations of text and background color but no differences between the age groups. There was also a significant interaction between combinations of text and background color and age group. These results form an useful basis for web design guidelines for Thai websites for text and background color for both younger and older users. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
