This paper presents an experimental study on environment recognition and movement control for multiagent robotic soccer using wheeled mobile robots. A color image segmentation method based on YUV color information of each pixel of the color image is applied to the object recognition. The color image segmentation is performed using the tables that transform each value in a pixel to membership in several color classes, where the lower and higher threshold values of Y, U, and V are determined and described for the sample color markers. The position of objects on the field is efficiently and accurately calculated using a monocular camera. A common image processing method is used to detect landmarks such as corners/edges in the environment. A movement control algorithm is implemented based on the distance and orientation to the target. Experimental results of real-time movement control are also presented.

Articulation training with many kinds of stimulus and messages such as visual, voice, and articulatory information can teach user to pronounce correctly and improve user's articulatory ability. In this paper, an articulation training system with intelligent interface and multimode feedbacks is proposed to improve the performance of articulation training. Clinical knowledge of speech evaluation is used to design the dependent network. Then, automatic speech recognition with dependent network is applied to identify the pronunciation errors. Besides, hierarchical Bayesian network is proposed to recognize user's emotion from speeches. With the information of pronunciation errors and user's emotional state, the articulation training sentences can be dynamically selected. Finally, a 3D facial animation is provided to teach users to pronounce a sentence by using speech, lip motion, and tongue motion. Experimental results reveal the usefulness of proposed method and system.

This paper presents results from a preliminary analysis of interaction and human observation data gathered from students using an Aplusix, an intelligent tutoring system for algebra. Towards the development of automatic detectors of behavior and affect, this study tried to determine whether it was possible to identify distinct groups of students based on interaction logs alone. Using unsupervised clustering, we were able to identify that student behaviors within the software cluster into two categories, Clusters 0 and 1, associated with differing higher-level behaviors and affective states. Cluster 0 tended to reflect more collaborative work, whereas Cluster 1 reflected more solitary work. Cluster 1 students tended to exhibit more flow, suggesting that students in flow tend to work in a more individual fashion. An examination of the keystrokes used by each group showed that Cluster 0 used the arrow keys and cursor keys significantly more than Cluster 1. The Cluster 1, on the other hand, tended to type more mathematical operators or use the duplicate command more frequently than Cluster 0. This implies that frequent use of mathematical operators and frequent duplication of the problem may be evidence of flow within Aplusix.

This study investigates the effectiveness of the application of Virtual Reality Training (VRT) in the treatment of Communication Apprehension (CA). The participants were thirty undergraduate volunteer students enrolled at the university level. Virtual reality software and hardware were used to create a virtual auditorium scene for this training. Over five sessions, participants were subjected to virtual public speaking scenarios of varying intensity. Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD) scale was used to measure the participants' anxiety levels. The average level of anxiety reported during post-test was significantly less than that of the pre-test. The preliminary results indicated that VRT could be used as an effective method for reducing CA in clients and allow them to become involved in discussions and presentations more comfortably.

Current paper-based interfaces such as PapierCraft, provide very little feedback and this limits the scope of possible interactions. So far, there has been little systematic exploration of the structure, constraints, and contingencies of feedback-mechanisms in paper-based interaction systems for paper-only environments. We identify three levels of feedback: discovery feedback (e.g., to aid with menu learning), status-indication feedback (e.g., for error detection), and task feedback (e.g., to aid in a search task). Using three modalities (visual, tactile, and auditory) which can be easily implemented on a pen-sized computer, we introduce a conceptual matrix to guide systematic research on pen-top feedback for paper-based interfaces. Using this matrix, we implemented a multimodal pen prototype demonstrating the potential of our approach. We conducted an experiment that confirmed the efficacy of our design in helping users discover a new interface and identify and correct their errors. Copyright 2006 ACM.
