While public policy is a recognized important topic within human-computer interaction, not enough attention within SIGCHI has been paid to public policy efforts outside of the USA. This panel at CHI 2008 will focus on CHI policy issues around the world. Specifically, we plan to address at least three major topics: accessibility, privacy, and voting.

Recorded interviews form a rich basis for scholarly inquiry. Examples include oral histories, community memory projects, and interviews conducted for broadcast media. Emerging technologies offer the potential to radically transform the way in which recorded interviews are made accessible, but this vision will demand substantial investments from a broad range of research communities. This article reviews the present state of practice for making recorded interviews available and the state-of-the-art for key component technologies.A large number of important research issues are identified, and from that set of issues, a coherent research agenda is proposed. © 2008 ACM.

This paper presents a MapReduce algorithm for computing pairwise document similarity in large document collections. MapReduce is an attractive framework because it allows us to decompose the inner products involved in computing document similarity into separate multiplication and summation stages in a way that is well matched to efficient disk access patterns across several machines. On a collection consisting of approximately 900,000 newswire articles, our algorithm exhibits linear growth in running time and space in terms of the number of documents. © 2012, American College of Rheumatology.

A motivationally-aware version of the Ecolab system was developed with the aim of improving the learners' motivation. To gain some insight into the effects of motivational modeling on students' affective states, we observed the affect of 180 students interacting with either Ecolab or M-Ecolab. The affective states considered were based on existing coding schemes [10]. The results suggest that the motivationally-aware tutoring system seems to maintain students' delight over time. However, it seems the motivational interventions did not create new "virtuous cycles" of positive affect [10], or disrupt "vicious cycles", where a student persists in a negative affective state.

This paper presents a concept of a smart working environment designed to allow true joint-actions of humans and industrial robots. The proposed system perceives its environment with multiple sensor modalities and acts in it with an industrial robot manipulator to assemble capital goods together with a human worker. In combination with the reactive behavior of the robot, safe collaboration between the human and the robot is possible. Furthermore, the system anticipates human behavior, based on knowledge databases and decision processes, ensuring an effective collaboration between the human and robot. As a proof of concept, we introduce a use case where an arm is assembled and mounted on a robotpsilas body.

This paper presents a general overview of the technological fields of mechatronic, robotic, components for automation and control. Five technical areas are considered: component and instruments, mechatronic, robotics, cost oriented automation and human-machine systems. The paper addresses their current key problems and the recent major accomplishments. At last the most promising forecasted development and applications are considered.

Networks have remained a challenge for information retrieval and visualization because of the rich set of tasks that users want to accomplish. This paper offers an abstract Content-Actor network data model, a classification of tasks, and a tool to support them. The NetLens interface was designed around the abstract Content-Actor network data model to allow users to pose a series of elementary queries and iteratively refine visual overviews and sorted lists. This enables the support of complex queries that are traditionally hard to specify. NetLens is general and scalable in that it applies to any data set that can be represented with our abstract data model. This paper describes the use of NetLens with a subset of the ACM Digital Library consisting of about 4000 papers from the CHI conference written by about 6000 authors, and reports on a usability study with nine *** categories: H.5.2 information Interfaces and Presentations: User Interfaces - graphical user interfaces (GUI), interaction styles, prototyping. © 2007 PalgraveMacmillan Ltd. A proper behaviour of a robot is probably of importance when we consider the possibility of having it accepted by people. For example, it has been shown that erratic or unexplained behaviour tends to be a cause of distrust in the robot. There are several other, more non-technical issues that need to be fulfilled by the robot in order to make it acceptable in society. Even for cognitive, intelligent and largely autonomous robots their tasks need to be modelled. One such task modelling method, task patterns, has been proposed earlier as a language for describing robot activities. In this article it is suggested that the task pattern language can be extended through a framework based on the ideas behind Design Patterns, to also incorporate modelling of task properties that are important to the acceptance of a robot in a social environment.

Today there is a large movement towards creating social and cognitive robots. Today there is research aiming at using robots as care support as well as social agents introduced in geriatric care and home care. Much of the research is aimed at the development of cognitive and social agents, since robot agents are considered to need ways of interacting with the people in the surrounding areas. In this perspective it is necessary to start thinking of robots not only in terms of social, cognitive or sociable, but also of socially acceptable. What are the requirements for a socially acceptable robot, and which properties in a robot provide for making it more or less acceptable as part of a social environment? In this paper a set of tentative acceptance properties is presented, together with the results from a pilot study trying to assess the importance of some of these properties for the social acceptance of domestic service robots.
