This study investigates the effectiveness of the application of Virtual Reality Training (VRT) in the treatment of Communication Apprehension (CA). The participants were thirty undergraduate volunteer students enrolled at the university level. Virtual reality software and hardware were used to create a virtual auditorium scene for this training. Over five sessions, participants were subjected to virtual public speaking scenarios of varying intensity. Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD) scale was used to measure the participants' anxiety levels. The average level of anxiety reported during post-test was significantly less than that of the pre-test. The preliminary results indicated that VRT could be used as an effective method for reducing CA in clients and allow them to become involved in discussions and presentations more comfortably.

Many failures in long-term collaboration occur because of a lack of activity awareness. Activity awareness is a broad concept that involves awareness of synchronous and asynchronous interactions over extended time periods. We describe a procedure to evaluate activity awareness and collaborative activities in a controlled setting. The activities used are modeled on real-world collaborations documented earlier in a field study. We developed an experimental method to study these activity awareness problems in the laboratory. Participants worked on a simulated long-term project in the laboratory over multiple experimental sessions with a confederate, who partially scripted activities and probes. We present evidence showing that this method represents a valid model of real collaboration, based on participants' active engagement, lively negotiation, and awareness difficulties. We found that having the ability to define, reproduce, and systematically manipulate collaborative situations allowed us to assess the effect of realistic conditions on activity awareness in remote collaboration. We investigate cognitive factors that are predictive of learning gains when students learn to solve equations by teaching a synthetic peer, called SimStudent. Previous empirical studies showed that prior knowledge is strongly predictive of post-test scores. However, in a recent study in the Philippines that replicated our previous study in the USA, there were students with low priorknowledge who tutored their SimStudent better than other equally low prior students. In this paper, we analyze both process data (tutoring interactions) and outcome data (test scores) to understand what makes learning by teaching more effective. The results imply a presence of individual behavioral differences beyond the difference in the prior knowledge that might have affected SimStudent's learning, which in turn had non-trivial influence on tutor learning.
