Many initiatives aim at answering the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0). A key aspect of these initiatives is the connectivity of the different industrial entities. Communication and information exchange between entities usually flows in two dimensions;a vertical one, that spans the different levels of abstraction within the company, and a horizontal one connecting the different entities in the supply chain. In contrast, the Internet of Production (IoP) presents the World Wide Lab (WWL) allowing an extra dimension of communication, which we call the cross-company dimension. Hence, the WWL integrates the different entities within and across potentially competing labs and companies. The WWL leverages and aggregates accessible production data fostering an exchange of information, that prevents redundant experimentation and increases quality of data-driven models by including data from diverse manufacturing settings. This paper discusses work done towards this vision and technical, economic, social, legal, and ethical challenges the WWL faces and provides a roadmap towards infrastructuring the WWL. © 2023 IEEE.

Work-related Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) account for 60% of sickness-related absences and even permanent inability to work in the Europe, Long term impacts of MSDs include "Pain chronification'' which is the transition of temporary pain into persistent pain. Preventive pain management can lower the risk of chronic pain. It is therefore important to appropriately assess pain in advance, which can assist a person in improving their fear of returning to work. In this study, we analysed pain data acquired over time by a smartphone application from a number of participants. We attempt to forecast a person's future pain levels based on his or her prior pain data. Due to the self-reported nature of the data, modelling daily pain is challenging due to the large number of missing values. For pain prediction modelling of a test subject, we employ a subset selection strategy that dynamically selects a closest subset of individuals from the training data. The similarity between the test subject and the training subjects is determined via dynamic time warping-based dissimilarity measure based on the time limited historical data until a given point in time. The pain trends of these selected subset subjects is more similar to that of the individual of interest. Then, we employ a Gaussian processes regression model for modelling the pain. We empirically test our model using a leave-one-subject-out cross validation to attain 20% improvement over state-of-the-art results in early prediction of pain. © 2023 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Current trends in the development of applications bring new challenges that re-quire both a rapprochement and an understanding of the elements implicit in the interaction of this type of system and the users who use them. One of the most relevant aspects in this interaction is user satisfaction;as a result, it is necessary to establish a broader and more precise definition of user satisfaction in interactive systems from customer experience (CX), at the same time giving thought to the different constructs that characterize the software. This article presents a proposal that extends the concept of the user satisfaction to establish the characteristics that derive from the CX, along with traditional approaches that support user satisfaction. From this characterization, it is intended to propose a construct through which the different factors that influence user satisfaction are understood, how these factors condition it and how they converge to impact it. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The inclusion of the elderly in the digital world is still quite incipient in several parts of the world. The lack of satisfaction of the elderly in the use of computational applications is related to the lack of adaptations to their limitations. The feeling of frustration, fueled by insecurity and disorientation, keeps the elderly away from technology. This study proposes a detailed methodology using heuristic evaluation based on works established in the literature on usability and accessibility, taking into account the aging of the population. To validate the set of heuristics, a case study on two banking applications was carried out.

Segmentation of cardiac images, particularly late gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (LGE-MRI)widely used for visualizing diseased cardiacstructures, is a crucial first step for clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, direct segmentation ofLGE-MRIsischallenging due to *** most clinical studies have relied on manual and labor-intensive approaches, automatic methods are of high interest, particularly optimized machine learning *** address this, we organized the "2018 Left Atrium Segmentation Challenge" using 154 3D LGE-MRIs, currently the world's largest cardiac LGE-MRI dataset, and associated labels of the left atriumsegmented by three medical experts,ultimately attractingthe participation of27 international teams. In this paper, extensive analysis of the submitted algorithms using technical and biological metrics was performed by undergoing subgroup analysis and conducting hyper-parameter analysis,offeringan overall picture ofthe major design choices of convolutional neural networks(CNNs) and practical considerations for achieving state-of-the-art left atrium segmentation. Results show the top methodachieved a dice score of 93.2%and a mean surface to a surface distance of 0.7mm, significantly outperforming prior state-of-the-art. Particularly, our analysisdemonstrated that double, sequentially usedCNNs, in which a first CNN is used for automatic region-of-interestlocalization and a subsequent CNN is used for refinedregional segmentation, achieved far superiorresults than traditional methods and pipelinescontaining *** findings from this study can potentially be extended to other imaging datasets and modalities, having an impact on the wider medical imaging *** large-scale benchmarking study makes a significant step towards much-improved segmentation methods for cardiac LGE-MRIs, and will serveas animportant benchmark for evaluating and comparing the future works in the field. With the increase in data availability and data volume it becomes increasingly important to extract information and actionable knowledge from data. Information Visualization helps the user to understand data by utilizing vision as a relatively parallel input channel to the user’s mind. Decision Support systems on the other hand help users in making information actionable, by suggesting beneficial decisions and presenting them in context. Both fields share a common need for understanding the interface between the computer and the human. This makes human factors research critical for both fields. Understanding limitations of human perception, cognition and action, as well as their variance must be understood to fully leverage information visualization and decision support. Despite the widespread popularity of smart cities in policy and research fields, and the ever-increasing ageing population in urban areas, ageing ibues have seldom been addrebed in depth in smart city programs. The main focus has hitherto been on making physical environments 'older people friendly'. We review studies in environmental gerontology, policies and HCI that show the multifaceted relationship between ageing and cities. We discub two case studies with scenarios of engagement of older people in urban areas we undertook in the past 4 years. By drawing upon the results, we propose a vision of smart city that conceives of older people as embedded in intergenerational urban communities and capable of creating new engagement situations by reconfiguring IT-driven scenarios to their interests and social practices. This paper aims at expanding the current visions of smart cities for older people by building along three main dimensions: technology, agency and community. Copyright © 2015 ACM.

Every time there is an increased interest in measuring and evaluating the user experience more objectively and accurately with respect to the real needs of users. However, the evolution of technology has meant various challenges and have achieved a closer understanding of the implicit elements in the user and an interactive system interaction. In the case of virtual learning environments, the challenge is greater as there are contextual specific aspects that traditional methods cannot provide in an adequate way to assess the satisfaction of use in such environments. This proposal intended to include crucial elements that characterize learning software systems and to show how to evaluate these systems from an emotional approach. Copyright 2014 ACM.
