Eye typing provides means of communication especially for people with severe disabilities. Recent research indicates that the type of feedback impacts typing speed, error rate, and the user's need to switch her gaze between the on-screen keyboard and the typed text field. The current study focuses on the issues of feedback when a short dwell time (450 ms vs. 900 ms in a previous study) is used. Results show that the findings obtained using longer dwell times only partly apply for shorter dwell times. For example, with a short dwell time, spoken feedback results in slower text entry speed and double entry errors. A short dwell time requires sharp and clear feedback that supports the typing rhythm.

A joystick text entry method for game controllers and mobile phones would be valuable, since these devices often have joysticks but no conventional keyboards. But prevalent joystick text entry methods are slow because they are selection-based. EdgeWrite, a new joystick text entry method, is not based on selection but on gestures from a unistroke alphabet. Our experiment shows that this new method is faster, leaves fewer errors, and is more satisfying than date stamp and selection keyboard (two prevalent selection-based methods) for novices after minimal practice. For more practiced users, our results show that EdgeWrite is at least 1.5 times faster than selection keyboard, and 2.4 times faster than date stamp.

We discuss our research into the development and testing of a notification system claims library for assisting designers in interface development. Our research focuses on achieving consistent values among multiple users when adding and searching claims. We discuss the methods used for redesigning the application, techniques used for testing, and reengineering goals for the Claims Library. This work extends previous efforts on design knowledge reuse in the HCI research community, as such our methods and techniques should be reusable by others. We designed the interface to the library for users entering claims, ensuring usability and understandability. Since we noted problems with a particular feature (the IRC input method) through an internal round of testing, we conducted a lab-based test to isolate specific breakdowns. Our results validated portions of claim classification indices, suggest key reengineering changes that should inform ongoing and future development of the claims library - of broad interest of notification systems developers. Notification interfaces that continuously present peripheral information have received increasing interest within the HCI community, especially those supporting awareness of others' activities. While recent empirical studies have focused on information design aspects of peripheral displays, there have been few reported studies that comparatively evaluate actual systems. To this end, this article describes our efforts in comparing three interfaces that inform a remote user about activities within a given setting. Our data allow conclusions about comparative interface usability and preference, and provide an indication about metrics that are valuable to focus on in evaluations for these types of interfaces. In particular, we find that quantitative, performance related metrics, such as the correctness of notification interpretation and interruption to a primary task, are much less conclusive for fully implemented peripheral interfaces than qualitative judgments based on the usage experience. Small-scale classification schemes which are used extensively in the coordination of cooperative work are discussed. The study investigates the creation and use of a classification scheme for handling the system requirements during the redevelopment of a nation-wide information system. The requirements classification provide the software engineers with an important means of discretely balancing the contractual aspect of requirements engineering. The requirements classification is analyzed in terms of complementary concepts of boundary objects.

Since 1977, we have followed a total of 12 prelinguistic, profoundly deaf children who used different amounts of tactile stimulation at various stages of language acquisition. Subjects ranged in age from 6 weeks to 5 years old at the onset of tactile aid usage. Longitudinal data measuring speech perception, speech production, and general linguistic behavior suggest that our nine successful tactile aid users followed a sequence of language acquisition similar to that outlined for normal hearing children [A. Peters, The Units of Language Acquisition (Cambridge U. P., Cambridge, England, 1983)] and that Peters' work provides a theoretical basis for incorporating tactile aids into language training programs for young deaf children. Language learning difficulties and socioenvironmental factors, not device design and construction, account for why three subjects did not become frequent tactile aid users. The cumulative effect of our data for all subjects suggests that there is a need for a gradation of devices providing increasingly complex tactile stimulation as the child matures linguistically and physically. Videotapes will be used to illustrate tactile aid usage. [Work supported by The Deafness Research Foundation and grant no. RR07143, department of Health and human Services.]

A course on pervasive computing should be structured around key functions throughout a systems development process to cover common underlying concerns throughout science and engineering disciplines - development of design rationale, prototyping, evaluation, and component reuse. However, broader considerations of usage context and appreciation for research and methodological contributions from other disciplines must be strongly factored into course planning. To achieve both goals, we suggest learning objectives, a general strategy and approach using case-based learning.

Reacting to challenges that have been observed in human-computerinteraction (HCI) education, as well as the multidisciplinary design, science, and engineering underpinnings, we investigate a pedagogical approach based on case methods. Our study of various case method techniques in an undergraduate HCI class provides insights into challenges that can be expected in the employment of case methods, student learning outcomes, and considerations for HCI curriculum planning. In general, case methods show great promise with a wide variety of topics, and we present broad recommendations for future work that will improve integration of HCI professional practice, research, and education.
