While training participants to assemble a 3D wooden burr puzzle, we compared results of training in a stereoscopic, head tracked virtual assembly environment utilizing haptic devices and data gloves with real world training. While virtual training took participants about three times longer, the group that used the virtual environment was able to assemble the physical test puzzle about three times faster than the group trained with the physical puzzle. We present several possible cognitive explanations for these results and our plans for future exploration of the factors that improve the effectiveness of virtual process training over real world experience.

A gap exists between virtualreality (VR) software platforms designed for optimum hardware abstraction and cluster support, and those designed for efficient content authoring and exploration of interaction techniques through prototyping. This paper describes VR JuggLua, a high-level virtualreality application framework based on combining Lua, a dynamic, interpreted language designed for embedding and extension, with VR Juggler and OpenSceneGraph. This work allows fully-featured immersive applications to be written entirely in Lua, and also supports the embedding of the Lua engine in C++ applications. Like native C++ VR Juggler applications, VR JuggLua-based applications run successfully on systems ranging from a single desktop machine to a 49-node cluster. The osgLua introspection-based bindings facilitate scenegraph manipulation from Lua code, while bindings created using the Luabind template meta-programming library connect VR Juggler functionality. A thread-safe run buffer allows new Lua code to be passed to the interpreter during run time, supporting interactive creation of scene-graph structures. It has been successfully used in an immersive application implementing two different navigation techniques entirely in Lua and a physically-based virtual assembly simulation where C++ code handles physics computations and Lua code handles all display and configuration.

Cine MRI is an imaging technique for visualizing the left ventricle wall motion in a heart beating cycle. The paper proposed a method to semi-automatically segment the left ventricle (LV) boundaries from a stack of cine MRI and build a LV mesh. The different intensities in the MRI are modeled with the mixture of Gaussian method. The thresholds between them are semi-automatically determined by K-means initialization and the expectation maximization (EM) method. The spatial constrain is added into the model with active contour models, which fit explicit contours on the boundary of the area of interest. We propose a marching cube alike initialization method of the active contour models. A 3D mesh is built from a stack of contours and smoothed afterwards. Stroke volume, myocardium mass and ejection function can be estimated from the LV boundary mesh and the endocardium mesh.

Digital Signage has become a common-place feature in many public spaces and retail establishments;yet, only limited research has been reported to date on these technologies. For example, questions such as their effect on decision-making, cognitive load, and purchase behavior have yet to be examined. In an effort to attract more attention and increase effectiveness, venders of digital signage are rapidly enhancing features and capabilities for these displays. For example, displays are moving from simple 2d screens to 3d auto-stereoscopic screens, screens featuring multimodal forms of interaction are replacing static displays, and display-only screens are being replaced by displays capable of recognizing user characteristics. An important "new" type of display is the dynamic digital menu board, which combines digital signage with the power of video. Surprisingly, despite its increasingly common use in areas as diverse as education and retail, only limited academic research on digital signage has been conducted in areas such as marketing with little attention coming from the HCI field. Our research is focused on addressing this shortcoming by applying theories from HCI, marketing, and information systems to investigate the role of video and dynamic digital menu board display characteristics on consumer decision-making. We hypothesize that each consumer decision-making stage will be affected by the "vividness" of video in dynamic digital menu boards.
