Wearable ion gel based pressure sensor with high sensitivity and ultra-wide sensing range for human motion detection

Wearable and flexible pressure sensors are applicable to a variety of fields, including human motion detection. Covering the entire range of human motion, they should be able to detect a wide range of pressures, from low to high, with high sensitivity. The ion gel-based pressure sensors, a deformable and stretchable material, measure the capacitance caused by an electric double layer at the electrode - electrolyte interface, and the capacitance significantly increases as the contact area increases. In this work, a series of ionic liquid complexes (ILC) consisting of solvated ionic liquid and conventional ionic liquid were prepared and explored in terms of ionization state. Additionally, the effects of the ILCs have also been confirmed when incorporated into a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix as ion gels. Using the prepared ion gels, wearable pressure sensors were fabricated by sandwiching the ion gel between two cotton fabrics. A conductive knit tape served as an electrode to maximize the contact area between the electrode and ion gel, resulting in high sensitivity and an ultra-wide range of sensing. This study opens up the potential application of wearable ion gel-based pressure sensors with novel ionic liquid complexes.

Fashion informatics of the Big 4 Fashion Weeks using topic modeling and sentiment analysis

This study used several informatics techniques to analyze consumer-driven social media data from four cities (Paris, Milan, New York, and London) during the 2019 Fall/Winter (F/W) Fashion Week. Analyzing keywords using a semantic network analysis method revealed the main characteristics of the collections, celebrities, influencers, fashion items, fashion brands, and designers connected with the four fashion weeks. Using topic modeling and a sentiment analysis, this study confirmed that brands that embodied similar themes in terms of topics and had positive sentimental reactions were also most frequently mentioned by the consumers. A semantic network analysis of the tweets showed that social media, influencers, fashion brands, designers, and words related to sustainability and ethics were mentioned in all four cities. In our topic modeling, the classification of the keywords into three topics based on the brand collection's themes provided the most accurate model. To identify the sentimental evaluation of brands participating in the 2019 F/W Fashion Week, we analyzed the consumers' sentiments through positive, neutral, and negative reactions. This quantitative analysis of consumer-generated social media data through this study provides insight into useful information enabling fashion brands to improve their marketing strategies.

Toughening of polylactide by in-situ reactive compatibilization with an isosorbide-containing copolyester

Polylactide (PLA)/poly(1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene isosorbide terephthalate) (PEICT) blends were prepared by melt processing. Oligomer, with multiple epoxy functional groups, were introduced as a reactive compatibilizer to enhance interfacial adhesion of the two blend components. The reaction between the reactive compatibilizer and blend components was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy and rheological analysis. The improved compatibility of the blends reduced interfacial tension between polymer components, yielding a co-continuous phase morphology from a sea-island morphology. The added PEICT improved the impact strength of PLA to 22.5 kJ/m(2) at 40% loading. After compatibilization and the impact strength of PLA/PEICT blends increased to 44.1 kJ/m(2), showing that increased interfacial adhesion improved energy transfer between the polymers.

Analysis of Microplastics Released from Plain Woven Classified by Yarn Types during Washing and Drying

Microplastics reach the aquatic environment through wastewater. Larger debris is removed in sewage treatment plants, but filters are not explicitly designed to retain sewage sludge's microplastic or terrestrial soils. Therefore, the effective quantification of filtration system to mitigate microplastics is needed. To mitigate microplastics, various devices have been designed, and the removal efficiency of devices was compared. However, this study focused on identifying different fabrics that shed fewer microplastics. Therefore, in this study, fabric-specific analyses of microplastics of three different fabrics during washing and drying processes were studied. Also, the change in the generation of microplastics for each washing process of standard washing was investigated. The amount of microplastics released according to the washing process was analyzed, and the collected microplastics' weight, length, and diameter were measured and recorded. According to the different types of yarn, the amount of microplastic fibers produced during washing and drying varied. As the washing processes proceed, the amount of microplastics gradually decreased. The minimum length (>40 mu m) of micro-plastics generated were in plain-woven fabric. These results will be helpful to mitigate microplastics in the production of textiles and in selecting built-in filters, and focusing on the strict control of other parameters will be useful for the development of textile-based filters, such as washing bags.

Characterization of Microplastics Released Based on Polyester Fabric Construction during Washing and Drying

With the increasing production of synthetic materials, more microplastic fibers are being generated while washing clothes. Consequently, these particles are increasingly detected in the aquatic environment. Synthetic fibers produced via washing have a relatively high contribution to microplastic pollution. Hence, recent research on reducing the release of microplastic fibers is attracting considerable attention. In this study, fabric-specific analysis was performed by strictly controlling various factors, and each washing and drying process was improved by focusing on the mechanical factors affecting microplastic release. Furthermore, the mass of the collected microplastic fibers and their length distribution were measured. Fabric construction, including chemical composition and yarn type, impacted the microplastics released during washing and drying. Differences in the mechanical factors during washing helped to identify the physical factors affecting microplastic release. These results on the release of microplastics may provide a basis for developing a filter system that can minimize the unintended environmental consequences.

Suppressing the dark current density (J(d)) while maintaining sufficient charge transport is important for improving the specific detectivity (D*) and dynamic characteristics of organic photodetectors (OPDs). In this study, we synthesized three novel small-molecule acceptors (SMAs) densely surrounded by insulating alkyl side chains to minimize the J(d) in OPDs. Introducing trialkylated N-annulated perylene diimide as a terminal moiety to the alkylated pi-conjugated core structure was highly efficient in suppressing J(d) in the devices, resulting in an extremely low J(d) of 4.60 x 10(-11) A cm(-2) and 10-100 times improved D* values in the devices. In addition, SMAs with a geometrically aligned backbone structure exhibited better intermolecular ordering in the blended films, resulting in 3-10 times as high responsivity (R) values in the OPDs. Outstanding OPD performances with a D* of 8.09 x 10(12) Jones, -3 dB cutoff frequency of 205.2 kHz, and rising response time of 16 mu s were achieved under a 530 nm illumination in photoconductive mode. Geometrically aligned core-terminal SMAs densely surrounded by insulating alkyl side chains are promising for improving the static and dynamic properties of OPDs.

Solution-state doping-assisted molecular ordering and enhanced thermoelectric properties of an amorphous polymer

Molecular doping of conjugated polymers is the performance-determining step in the fabrication of organic thermoelectric devices. Although strongly oxidizing salt-type dopants effectively produce charge carriers in polymer chains, their poor solubility in the processing solvents leads to undesired precipitation and complicates the film fabrication process. Thus, it is important to develop a conjugated polymer that can be readily doped in a mixed solution using organic dopants. In this study, we synthesized amorphous but highly electron-rich polymers (PCT1 and PCT2) by combining 4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene and thieno[3,4-b]thiophene moieties, whose full-names are poly[(4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl)-alt-(2-ethylhexyl-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-2-carboxylate 4,6-diyl)] (PCTs). The PCT polymers were heavily doped with the organic dopant 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), and the resulting PCT:F4TCNQ complex formed an integer charge transfer complex and promoted the intermolecular ordering of PCT polymers. Notably, the PCT:F4TCNQ complex exhibited unique thermoelectric behaviors, with significantly increased power factors even in the presence of large quantities of F4TCNQ, reaching values 3.2-fold higher than those achieved with FeCl3 sequential doping. Moreover, the higher-molecular-weight polymer, PCT2, exhibited more efficient molecular ordering and charge carrier transport than PCT1, which are crucial for enhancing the thermoelectric properties.

High-performance organic photodiodes (OPDs) and OPD-based image sensors are primarily realized using solution processes based on various additives and coating methods. However, vacuum-processed OPDs, which are more compatible with large-scale production, have received little attention, thereby hindering their integration into advanced systems. This study introduces innovations in the material and device structures to prepare superior vacuum-processed OPDs for commercial applications. A series of vacuum-processable, low-cost p-type semiconductors is developed by introducing an electron-rich cyclopentadithiophene core containing various electron-accepting moieties to fine-tune the energy levels without any significant structural or molecular weight changes. An additional nanointerlayer strategy is used to control the crystalline orientation of the upper-deposited photoactive layer, compensating for device performance reduction in inverted, top-illuminated OPDs. These approaches yielded an external quantum efficiency of 70% and a specific detectivity of 2.0 x 10(12) Jones in the inverted structures, which are vital for commercial applications. These OPDs enabled visible-light communications with extremely low bit error rates and successful X-ray image capture.

Development of low bandgap polymers for red and near-infrared fullerene-free organic photodetectors

Two photoconductive conjugated polymers (PDTPTT and PCPDTTT) were synthesized to be utilized in red and near-infrared (NIR) organic photodetectors (OPDs). The low bandgap was achieved by stabilizing the quinoidal structure of the conjugated backbone, and both donor polymers showed strong red and NIR absorption in the range of 500-900 nm. To enhance the exciton separation and intensify the red and NIR absorption, p-n bulk heterojunction OPDs were fabricated by blending a PDTPTT (or PCPDTTT) and a low bandgap nonfullerene acceptor (IDIC). The PCPDTTT:IDIC devices showed excellent OPD performances with a detectivity (D*) of 1.14 x 10(12) Jones and a -3 dB bandwidth (f(-3dB)) of 211.7 Hz at -1 V, whereas the PDTPTT:IDIC devices were not successful due to the high dark current density (J(D)) at negative bias. The interfacial energies of the PDTPTT:IDIC and PCPDTTT:IDIC blends were calculated by measuring the solvent contact angles and we found that the lower interfacial energy of the PCPDTTT:IDIC blends could make a well-mixed nanomorphology in the blend films, resulting in superior OPD properties. On the other hand, the shallow HOMO energy level (-4.66 eV) of PDTPTT could make substantial J(D), which showed suboptimal OPD performances.

Ultrafast flashlight sintered mesoporous NiO nanosheets for stable asymmetric supercapacitors

Ultrafast flashlight sintering (FLS) has become an important green manufacturing technology for the structural reformation of various nanomaterials. Nickel oxide (NiO) has been extensively studied as a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage owing to its high theoretical specific capacitance, low cost, and appropriate chemical compatibility. This study reports the fabrication of mesoporous ultrathin NiO nanosheets on carbon cloth (CC) as green electrodes for flexible supercapacitors (SCs) through an exceptional ultrafast millisecond FLS process at room temperature. The optimized FLS-NiO@i12J electrode exhibited a remarkable specific capacity of 202.3 mA h g(-1) (1215 F g(-1)) at a current density of 2 A g(-1). Strikingly, the as-fabricated FLSNiO electrodes outperformed the time and energy-consuming conventional thermally annealed (CTA) NiO electrodes. Furthermore, the flexible FLS-NiO@i12J//rGO asymmetric SCs deliver a remarkable energy density of 47.18 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 758.37 W Kg(-1) and extraordinary cycling stability performance after 15,000 cycles. In addition, the FLS-NiO@i12J electrodes offer unique mesoporous structures, high surface areas, and numerous open-pore channels of ultrathin NiO nanosheets that facilitate fast transport of ions and rapid redox reactions. Thus, the present approach is promising for designing advanced electrode materials for flexible energy storage applications.
