Spatial matching and flow in supply and demand of water provision services: A case study in Xiangjiang River Basin

Global climate change and increased human consumption have aggravated the uneven spatiotemporal distribution of watershed water resources, affecting the water provision supply and demand state. However, this problem has often been ignored. The present study used the Xiangjiang River basin(XRB) as the study area, and the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs(InVEST) model, demand quantification model,supply–demand ratio, and water flow formula were applied to explore the spatial heterogeneity, flow, and equilibrium between water supply and demand. The results demonstrated significant spatial heterogeneity in the upstream, midstream, and downstream *** areas of water shortage were mainly located the downstream of the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration, and the Hengyang basin was the most scarcity area. Affected by terrain gradients and human needs, water flow varied from-16.33 × 10^(8) m^(3) to 13.69 × 10^(8) m^(3)from the upstream to the downstream area, which provided a possibility to reduce spatial heterogeneity. In the future, measures such as strengthening water resource system control,sponge city construction, and dynamic monitoring technology should be taken to balance the supply and demand of water in different river sections of the basin. This study can provide references for regulating water resources allocation in different reaches of the basin.

Central Asia (CA) faces a severe water crisis exemplified by the shrinking Aral Sea. However, little is known about the entire region, particularly the numerous small water bodies that are vulnerable to climate change yet vital for regional sustainability. We examined water bodies as small as 0.0045 km2 across CA from 1992 to 2020, identifying 66,215 water bodies in 2020, 82.2% of which were previously unstudied. In contrast to the well-documented decline of the Aral Sea, other water bodies have expanded by 10.7% (8714.3 km2), with a net gain of 15,831 lakes since 1992. These findings challenge the perception of a drying CA and provide evidence of a warm-wet climate trend, which is redistributing water resources and creating opportunities for transforming water management to address the long-standing water crisis in CA. © 2025 Science China Press

When an urban metro disruption occurs,the urban metro usually operates in a short turning mode and bus bridging is the typical way to relink the disconnected *** emergency response models dealing with urban metro disruptions,minimizing passenger delay in the bus bridging process and the metro short turning process is usually the optimization *** this study,we simultaneously consider the passenger delay in the bus bridging process and the metro short turning process to develop a coordinated emergency response model dealing with urban metro *** proposed coordinated model is validated in an actual urban metro line using actual passenger boarding demand *** insights in response to urban metro disruptions are obtained.

The three-line hybrid rice system, which relies on cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), faces challenges in breeding efficiency. To address these challenges, we developed CMS engineering breeding technology (CEBT). First, we constructed a complementation vector containing the fertility restoration module Double Rf4-Rf20, sorting marker gene DsRed2, and pollen lethal gene ZmAA1, then transformed this into a CMS line. We obtained reproductive lines without alterations to main agronomic traits, which can produce engineering sterile lines (ESL) and reproductive line seeds at a 1:1 ratio by self-crossing. CEBT converts the traditional three-line system into an efficient ‘new two-line’ hybrid framework: the reproductive line is improved while simultaneously improving the ESL, which significantly shortens the breeding process for three-line hybrid rice. © 2025 Crop Science Society of China and Institute of Crop Science, CAAS

Randomized Latent Factor Model for High-dimensional and Sparse Matrices from Industrial applications

Latent factor(LF) models are highly effective in extracting useful knowledge from High-Dimensional and Sparse(HiDS) matrices which are commonly seen in various industrial applications. An LF model usually adopts iterative optimizers,which may consume many iterations to achieve a local optima,resulting in considerable time cost. Hence, determining how to accelerate the training process for LF models has become a significant issue. To address this, this work proposes a randomized latent factor(RLF) model. It incorporates the principle of randomized learning techniques from neural networks into the LF analysis of HiDS matrices, thereby greatly alleviating computational burden. It also extends a standard learning process for randomized neural networks in context of LF analysis to make the resulting model represent an HiDS matrix *** results on three HiDS matrices from industrial applications demonstrate that compared with state-of-the-art LF models, RLF is able to achieve significantly higher computational efficiency and comparable prediction accuracy for missing data.I provides an important alternative approach to LF analysis of HiDS matrices, which is especially desired for industrial applications demanding highly efficient models.

Bayesian network-based risk evaluation model for the operational requirements of the China Railway Express under the Belt and Road initiative

The operation of the China Railway Express features numerous links across several regions and countries. Effectively controlling therisks involved in the operation of the China Railway Express is crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency and promoting the sustainabledevelopment of the China Railway Express. The Bayesian network-based risk-management model was built corresponding to theactual operation of the China Railway Express;the model used an advanced risk-management theory. The sensitivity analysis of riskfactors and Bayesian network inference were realized using the expectation-maximization and clique-tree propagation *** the risk-checklistmethod, 17 risk-related factors were analysed on 17 nodes of the Bayesian network fromthree perspectives—safety, efficiency and effectiveness—based on expert opinions and the actual operating conditions of the China Railway *** from a sensitivity analysis and evidence inference of the Bayesian network model indicated that the sensitivity coefficients ofnodes N01, N04, N07, N08 and N17 of the network were high. Moreover, the risk-occurrence probabilities for nodes N01, N04, N06,N07 and N09 were higher in the case of reverse inference. Our results revealed the crucial factors influencing the risk. The identifiedrisk factors included the stability of the political environment in countries along the route, conditions of station infrastructures andthe complexity of the process of changing rails and reloading. Further, risk-management suggestions were provided. By establishinga sound risk-management framework, reliable assessment and management could be realized in accordance with changes in theoperating conditions of the China Railway Express.

A new automatic evaluationmethod of subway service quality based onmetro smart card data is proposed suitable for three different levels:station pair,railway line and subway network,which has merits of overcoming the previous lagging and subjective evaluation in the system of‘questionnaire survey plus evaluationmethod’.First,passengers’travel time distribution for different operating periods in station OD pairs are introduced initially for service evaluation purposes and are classified into different groups in order to infer the station’s operating characteristics at the different ***,the classification is verified by K-means cluster analysis and K-S ***,the service quality weight indicator is proposed to identify the service quality of the entire metro network from the dual perspectives of passengers and ***,the feasibility and rationality of the proposed method are verified by Shenzhen metro smart card data as an *** new automated evaluation method of subway service quality is suitable for online and offline application.
