Choropleth maps, which utilize color schemes to visualize spatial patterns and trends, are simple yet effective tools for geographic data analysis. As such, color scheme design is a critical aspect of choropleth map creation. The traditional coloring methods offered by GIS tools such as ArcGIS and QGIS are not user-friendly for nonprofessionals. On the one hand, these tools provide numerous color schemes, making it hard to decide which one best matches the theme. On the other hand, it is difficult to fulfill some ambiguous and personalized coloring needs of users, such as requests for ‘summer-like’ map colors. To address these shortcomings, we develop a novel system that leverages a large language model and map color design principles to generate contextually relevant and user-aligned choropleth map color schemes. The system follows a three-stage process: data processing, which provides an overview of the data and classifies the data into meaningful classes;Color Concept Design, where the color theme and color mode are conceptualized based on data characteristics and user intentions;and Color Scheme Design, where specific colors are assigned to classes based on generated color theme, color mode, and user requirements. Our system incorporates an interactive interface, providing necessary visualization for choropleth map color design and allowing users to customize and refine color choices flexibly. Through user studies and evaluations, the system demonstrates acceptable usability, accuracy, and flexibility, with users highlighting the tool’s efficiency and ease of use. The unforgettable past: The long-term impact of war on corporate tax avoidance in modern China

Prior literature related to war effects usually has a short time horizon between the war event and its outcomes. However, little is known about whether the collective war memories can be transmitted across generations, and then impact later generations' decisions in a long-lasting way. Using a sample of 3244 A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2013 to 2019, the study finds that firms hiring CEOs originated from regions that were intensively affected by the war during 1931–1945 (i.e., the Second Sino-Japanese War) exhibit higher level of corporate tax avoidance. Moreover, the positive impact of war on corporate tax avoidance is more pronounced for CEOs who are the first generation born in the post-war period. Our mechanism tests show that firms hiring war-affected CEOs are more likely to make philanthropic giving, and have higher corporate social responsibility ratings, but not hold more risk assets, revealing that war-affected CEOs engaging in greater tax avoidance is due to their prosocial preference rather than risk preference. Our cross-sectional analyses reveal that the positive impact of war on corporate tax avoidance is stronger when CEOs are male, less educated, without political connection, with poor experiences and firms face financing constraints, but weaker when firms are under stricter tax enforcement. Above conclusions are robust to a set of robustness checks and still stand after confronting the endogeneity issue. © 2025

Evaluating the performance of gaze interaction for map target selection

ABSTRACTThe eye tracking approach has the potential to facilitate more tailored and intelligent geoapplication interactions. There is a lack of knowledge regarding how gaze interaction influences user performance (accuracy and efficiency), visual behavior, and cognitive workload in real-world map-reading settings. In this study, we adopted a low-cost eye tracker and dwell time method to implement a fundamental gaze-based map interaction: target (point, line and area) selection. We administered a comparative experiment in which 36 participants were asked to perform a series of map target selection tasks using gaze-based and mouse interactions. The results demonstrated that gaze-based map interaction is comparable to mouse in terms of overall efficiency. By evaluating the visual behavior of the participants, we found that mouse interaction exhibited heightened fixation frequency and larger saccade amplitude than gaze interaction. Although gaze-based map interaction frustrated participants more often, the overall cognitive workload was no different from that of mouse interaction. These differences between interaction modes were largely affected by task types but rarely dependent on target shapes or positions. Moreover, participants evaluated gaze interaction higher in terms of attractiveness, stimulation and novelty. These results are beneficial for map interaction researchers and developers.

Spatial matching and flow in supply and demand of water provision services: A case study in Xiangjiang River Basin

Global climate change and increased human consumption have aggravated the uneven spatiotemporal distribution of watershed water resources, affecting the water provision supply and demand state. However, this problem has often been ignored. The present study used the Xiangjiang River basin(XRB) as the study area, and the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs(InVEST) model, demand quantification model,supply–demand ratio, and water flow formula were applied to explore the spatial heterogeneity, flow, and equilibrium between water supply and demand. The results demonstrated significant spatial heterogeneity in the upstream, midstream, and downstream *** areas of water shortage were mainly located the downstream of the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration, and the Hengyang basin was the most scarcity area. Affected by terrain gradients and human needs, water flow varied from-16.33 × 10^(8) m^(3) to 13.69 × 10^(8) m^(3)from the upstream to the downstream area, which provided a possibility to reduce spatial heterogeneity. In the future, measures such as strengthening water resource system control,sponge city construction, and dynamic monitoring technology should be taken to balance the supply and demand of water in different river sections of the basin. This study can provide references for regulating water resources allocation in different reaches of the basin.

How is aggregate household consumption affected jointly by longevity, pension, and aging? Theory and evidence

The effects of longevity and pension on consumption or savings are investigated separately in previous studies. In this paper, we first construct a theoretical model which shed light on explicit joint role of longevity at different age, pension, and aging on aggregate household consumption. The testable implications are provided by theoretical discussion and are supported by empirical results based on panel data. The negative effect of longevity on the aggregate household consumption is strengthened by the aging. The pension has a positive impact on aggregate household consumption, and it is intensified by aging. The aggregate household consumption is affected positively by aging. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Rural gentrification is deeply characterized by institutional context and spatiotemporal *** on a diachronic field investigation,this paper constructs an analytical framework for gentrifying rural community development(GRCD)with a“community”theoretical perspective and analytical approach,defines the concept of GRCD,and analyzes the main characteristics,formation mechanism and regulation path of a typical gentrifying rural community in the Panyang River Basin of Bama County,*** by factors such as the complex flow and heterogeneous living space practices of the host-guest community,the longevity“myth”led by commercial capital and consumption demand,and multiple action logics and desertification community governance,great changes have occurred in the social space and material landscape of the rural longevity *** changes include comprehensive reconstruction of the resident population,surface interaction and social separation of the host-guest community,residential structure change and settlement landscape renewal,and delocalization of the healing landscape and lifestyle *** propose policy insights in three areas:public and localization institutional arrangements,shared and comfortable gentrifying rural community making,and inclusive and synergistic gentrifying rural community *** these aspects,we provide insights from the Chinese case for the gentrification and community development of rural areas in the Global South.

Optimizing the spatial organization of rural settlements based on life quality

Optimizing rural settlements is an important measure to cope with rural decline, and improve the quality of rural life and attractions. This study introduces the "life quality theory". Based on the mechanisms governing the interactions between rural settlement space and life quality, this study examines how to optimize the spatial organization of rural settlements. Three aspects are evaluated – the integration of rural settlement spatial functions, optimization of spatial structure, and regulation of spatial scale – with the objective of building an optimization mode and framework for the spatial organization of rural settlements with high life quality. Our results suggest the following:(1) The settlement is the spatial carrier of life quality, which is an essential settlement component, and these two aspects influence and improve each other. Therefore, reasonable rural settlement space is an important precondition for higher life quality.(2) The spatial function types of rural settlements can be divided into those that maintain livelihoods, develop industry, and upgrade life quality. Optimizing spatial organization of rural settlements based on life quality requires promoting the maintenance of livelihood, integration of industrial development, and implantation in quality improvement.(3) There are two important components of optimizing the spatial organization of rural settlements. One is promoting the organic concentration of living, agricultural, and industrial spaces, the reasonable distribution of social intercourse, recreational, and services spaces, and the organic balance of living, production, and ecological spaces, so as to reasonably optimize the combination of internal spatial types in settlements. The other is forming a functional structure level of a "comprehensive village–featured village" and building spatial organization settlement modes connected by rural roads by relocating and adjusting the function of villages. People detection in 2D laser range data is widely used in many application, such as robotics, smart cities or regions, and intelligent driving. For most current methods on people detection based on a single laser range finder are actually leg detectors as the sensor are always established below the knee height. Current state-of-the-art methods share similar steps including segmentation, feature extraction and a machine learning-based classification, but use different features which have good performance on their own experimental data. For researchers, it is important and desirable to know which features are more robust. In this paper, taking advantage of the fact that effective features can be selected by AdaBoost and assembled into a strong classifier, a set of features presented in state-of-the-art methods is combined with a set of features presented by us to train a leg detector by the AdaBoost algorithm. This detector is assembling by effective features and can classify segments into leg and non-leg. Three open source data sets including simple and complex scenarios are used for the experiments to test the features and extracted the important ones. To reduce the effect of segmentation on the final results, three segmentation methods are simultaneously used for experiments and analysis to ensure the reliability and credibility of our conclusion. Finally, 10 robust features for leg detection in 2D laser range data are presented based on the results. © Authors 2018.
