2-D shape completion with shape priors

We propose new techniques for 2-D shape/contour completion, which is one of the important research topics related to shape analysis and computer vision, e.g. the detection of incomplete objects due to occlusion and noises. The purpose of shape completion is to find the optimal curve segments that fill the missing contour parts, so as to acquire the best estimation of the original complete object shapes. Unlike the previous work using local smoothness or minimum curvature priors, we solve the problem under a Bayesian formulation taking advantage of global shape prior knowledge. With the priors, our methods are expert in recovering significant shape structures and dealing with large occlusion cases. There are two different priors adopted in this paper: (i) A generic prior model that prefers minimal global shape transformation (including non-rigid deformation and affine transformation with respect to a reference object shape) of the recovered complete shape; and (ii) a class-specific shape prior model learned from training examples of an object category, which prefers the reconstructed shape to follow the learned shape variation models of the category. Efficient contour completion algorithms are suggested corresponding to the two types of priors. Our experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed shape completion approaches compared to the existing techniques, especially for objects with complex structure under severe occlusion.

Fractal and multifractal properties of a family of fractal networks

In this work, we study the fractal and multifractal properties of a family of fractal networks introduced by Gallos et al (2007 Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 104 7746). In this fractal network model, there is a parameter e which is between 0 and 1, and allows for tuning the level of fractality in the network. Here we examine the multifractal behavior of these networks, the dependence relationship of the fractal dimension and the multifractal parameters on parameter e. First, we find that the empirical fractal dimensions of these networks obtained by our program coincide with the theoretical formula given by Song et al (2006 Nature Phys. 2 275). Then from the shape of the τ(q) and D(q) curves, we find the existence of multifractality in these networks. Last, we find that there exists a linear relationship between the average information dimension D(1) and the parameter e. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA Medialab srl.

In continuum one-dimensional space, a coupled directed continuous time random walk model is proposed, where the random walker jumps toward one direction and the waiting time between jumps affects the subsequent jump. In the proposed model, the Laplace-Laplace transform of the probability density function P (x, t) of finding the walker at position x at time t is completely determined by the Laplace transform of the probability density function (t) of the waiting time. In terms of the probability density function of the waiting time in the Laplace domain, the limit distribution of the random process and the corresponding evolving equations are derived. © 2014 Long Shi et al.

The multifractal properties of daily rainfall time series at the stations in Pearl River basin of China over periods of up to 45 years are examined using the universal multifractal approach based on the multiplicative cascade model and the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA). The results from these two kinds of multifractal analyses show that the daily rainfall time series in this basin have multifractal behavior in two different time scale ranges. It is found that the empirical multifractal moment function K ( q ) of the daily rainfall time series can be fitted very well by the universal multifractal model (UMM). The estimated values of the conservation parameter H from UMM for these daily rainfall data are close to zero indicating that they correspond to conserved fields. After removing the seasonal trend in the rainfall data, the estimated values of the exponent h ( 2 ) from MF-DFA indicate that the daily rainfall time series in Pearl River basin exhibit no long-term correlations. It is also found that K ( 2 ) and elevation series are negatively correlated. It shows a relationship between topography and rainfall variability.

A Distributed 2D-to-3D Video Conversion System

2D-to-3D video conversion is a feasible way to generate 3D programs for the current 3DTV industry. However, for large-scale 3D video production, current systems are no longer adequate in terms of the time and labor required for conversion. In this paper, we introduce a distributed 2D-to-3D video conversion system that includes a 2D-to-3D video conversion module, architecture of the parallel computation on the cloud, and 3D video coding in the system. The system enables cooperation among multiple users in the simultaneous completion of their conversion tasks so that the conversion efficiency is greatly promoted. In the experiments, we evaluate the system based on criteria related to both time consumption and video coding performance.

A Graph-based multi-hop cooperative MIMO transmission scheme (GM-MIMO) aimed at optimizing the network lifetime and saving energy for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (WSN) is proposed. In GM-MIMO, clusters are established based on geographical position. Graph theory is applied to find an optimal forwarding path. For taking the presence of node heterogeneity into consideration, GM-MIMO obtains maximum network lifetime. Simulation results show that GM-MIMO makes a significant performance improvement in terms of network lifetime and survival rate of nodes. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, an algorithm named best wavelet packet tree decomposition (BWPTD) is proposed for image compression. In order to obtain better sparse representation of image, best wavelet packet basis is introduced to decompose image signal in the algorithm. Experimental results show that BWPTD is better than single layer wavelet decompression (SLWD) and original compressed sensing (OCS) in peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) by 2db and 8db, respectively. In addition, the reconstruction time of BWPTD is only half as that of SLWD and OCS. © 2013 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is one latest presented approach for obtaining document clusters, which aimed to provide a minimum error non-negative representation of the term-document matrix. In this paper, we have extended the classical NMF approach by imposing sparseness constraints explicitly. The new model can learn much sparser matrix factorization. Also, an objective function is defined to impose the sparseness constraint, in addition to the non-negative constraint. Experimental results on real-world document datasets show that the proposed method can treat document clustering effectively and efficiently. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a learning based approach to estimating pixel disparities from the motion information extracted out of input monoscopic video sequences. We represent each video frame with superpixels, and extract the motion features from the superpixels and the frame boundary. These motion features account for the motion pattern of the superpixel as well as camera motion. In the learning phase, given a pair of stereoscopic video sequences, we employ a state-of-the-art stereo matching method to compute the disparity map of each frame as ground truth. Then a multi-label SVM is trained from the estimated disparities and the corresponding motion features. In the testing phase, we use the learned SVM to predict the disparity for each superpixel in a monoscopic video sequence. Experiment results show that the proposed method achieves low error rate in disparity estimation.

With the development of Genetically Modified (GM) food, security issue is being paid increasing attention. In this paper, a comprehensive model taking account factors which influencing GM food security is proposed. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to derive the weight of each attribute in different levels according to their importance. Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) function is generated by the safety degree of each element, then we use BPA function of the Dempster-Shafer evidence to represent the inclination of the elements. The safety degree of GM food will be get when weight was used as the discount factor and each attribute data was combined based on discount combination rule. 1548-7741/Copyright © 2011 Binary information Press.
