Wearing of vehicle parts could release many chemical additives into the environment, such as benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), and p -phenylenediamines (PPDs), which are potentially toxic to wildlife and humans. This study investigates the occurrence, source, and risks of BTRs, BTHs, and PPDs in a source catchment providing water to Guangzhou, a megacity in South China, covering groundwater, surface water, and stormwater. The results showed that BTRs and BTHs were predominant in surface water and groundwater. Unexpectedly, the BTR and BTH concentrations were lower in surface water than groundwater in a third of the paired samples. For the first time, 6PPD-quinone, a toxic ozonation product of N -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N' -phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6PPD), was extensively detected in source waters. Stormwater decreased the BTR concentrations but increased the 6PPD-quinone concentrations in surface water owing to their affiliation to suspended particles. From natural to urban segments of Liuxi river, a downstream increasing trend in BTR and BTH concentrations was observed, confirming that they are indicative of urban anthropogenic activities. Strong correlations between industrial activities and BTR or BTH concentrations in surface water indicated that industrial activities were their main sources. Six compounds were prioritized as potentially persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) chemicals, combing our monitoring results and REACH criterion. This study improves our understanding of the environmental fates and risks of water-soluble tire-wear chemicals, which provide important information for chemical management, and indicates attention should be paid to the risk posed by 6PPD-quinone in source water. © 2022, The Authors. Oxygen vacancy-mediated photocatalytic reactions have been extensively studied for the elimination of environmental pollutants. Herein, we developed the Sr 1-x La x CoO 3 (SLCO) photocatalysts with oxygen-rich vacancy using A-site substitution method for formaldehyde (HCHO) degradation. Benefiting from flexible composition and multiple valence states, SLCO catalysts display higher charge separation and transfer and a narrower band gap compared to SrCoO 2.5 (SCO), contributing to improved efficiency of light utilization and the formation of reactive oxygen species. Notably, SLCO-2 (1-X/X = 2) exhibited the optimal catalytic activity with a conversion rate of up to 96 % for HCHO degradation in 15 min and long-term durability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirmed that SLCO-2 displayed appropriate thermodynamic formation energy of oxygen vacancy (−0.71 eV). O 2 adsorbed on oxygen vacancies can be activated to form critical free radicals ∙O 2 – and 1 O 2 , then participating in the degradation process of HCHO. This study highlights the role of oxygen vacancies in SLCO perovskite in photocatalysis and provides new perspectives for the rational design of photocatalysts with satisfactory performance.

In view of the toughening environmental regulations and the deteriorating market environment, the development of clean, cost-effective beneficiation technologies is increasingly urgent. Hereby, an alkali-free Zn beneficiating technology developed based on collector O-(2-methylpropyl) N-prop-2-enylcarbamothioate (MPECT) is being introduced. Single mineral and binary mineral mixture tests suggest that the technology presents the potential to separate sphalerite and pyrite, with the collector MPECT providing excellent collection for CuSO 4 -activated sphalerite and sodium metabisulfite (NaMBS) giving good depression of pyrite under neutral pulp pH. The bench-scale closed-circuit flotation tests showed that the technology is suitable for the beneficiation of complex actual ore, and is capable of obtaining high-grade Zn concentrates featuring high recovery. Lastly, following the validation of numerous laboratory flotation experiments, the alkali-free technology was successfully applied in industrial production. The application results show that the technology enjoys significant advantages over the original technology, increasing Zn recovery from 93.03% to 93.54% while maintaining a close Zn grade of Zn concentrate. This translates into an increased revenue of 294,438 USD, and simultaneously reducing reagent costs by 208,000 USD for the Huangshaping Lead-Zinc Concentrator. Given the economic attractiveness of MPECT reagent scheme, the alkali-free Zn beneficiating technology is poised to be widely used in industry.

Zinc sulfides, as crucial resources for obtaining metal zinc, frequently coexisting with pyrite and being separated in alkaline pulp. However, the alkaline pulp poses a significant environmental burden. In response, the alkali-free zinc beneficiation reagent system is developed. Herein, findings from solution chemistry analysis favors the classical surface deposition mode of activator Cu(II) on sphalerite. However, adsorption capacity studies reveal that this mode is exclusive to alkaline pulp with pH exceeding 9.5. In neutral pulp, Cu(II) prefers the ion-exchange adsorption mode. DFT calculations further underscore that the Cu(II) ion-exchanged on sphalerite serves as a target for the interfacial adsorption of collector O-(2-methylpropyl) N-prop-2-enylcarbamothioate (MPECT). Notably, the energy selectivity index (ESI) for the adsorption of MPECT and H2O molecule at the Cu target is 15.63 %, significantly surpassing the 3.82 % observed in direct adsorption at the Zn site. In addition, XPS confirmed that after the modification of the sphalerite by Cu(II), some of the surface-attached Cu2+ cations were reduced to Cu+ cations by S2− anions. This valence state composition, which is similar to that of covellite, facilitates the interfacial adsorption of MPECT. This work sheds a solid theoretical foundation and practical reference for the alkali-free beneficiation of zinc sulfide minerals. © 2025

Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process was successfully constructed in a fixed bed reactor. The ammonium and TN removal efficiencies exceeded 90% under the collaboration of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB), anammox and denitrifying bacteria (DNB). However, the well cooperation was interrupted after introducing the weak MF of 3.5 mT, which was reflected directly by the increased nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity and decreased AOB, anammox and DNB activities calculated via mass balance. Moreover, drastic microbial community structure changes induced by weak MF were observed. The dominant phylum changed from Proteobacteria (25.6%) to Deferribacteres (35.2%). The weak MF suppressed the growth of AOB (genus Nitrosomanas), anammox (genus Candidatus Brocadia and clone Anammox) and DNB (genus Denitratisoma) while promoted the enrichment of NOB (genus Nitrospira). Moreover, the weakened NH3-NH2OH, NO-N2O and N2O-N2 pathways might explain the deterioration of SNAD process caused by weak MF. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

This paper reviews the changes in pork production in China,the largest pork producing and consuming nation in the *** pork sector in China has changed dramatically since the 1990s,with large-scale intensive pork production systems replacing the former,exclusively family-based pork production *** breeding,feeding,vaccinating,and management technologies are widely used ***,smallholders still account for a large proportion of the total *** intensification and specialization of the pork sector is expected to continue in the future,but there is increasing awareness and pressure to develop more environmentally-sustainable production *** relative shortage of domestically produced feed,the low utilization efficiency of feed ingredients,the large emissions of nitrogen and phosphorus to the environment,the high use of antibiotics,and the presence of residual metals in manures are very large challenges for the pork sector *** solve these problems,techniques including new feed resource utilization,precise feeding,low-protein diets,alternatives to antibiotics and increased manure recycling are all important topics and research directions *** new techniques and management approaches,it is possible to build more sustainable pork production systems in China.

The migration characteristics of highly mobile nuclides in natural barrier are the key concerns in the long-term safety assessment of geological disposal facilities. This paper focused on typical granite in Beishan area for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, and established a computational model for the release and migrate of nuclides after closure of repository by GoldSim. The migration characteristics of Cs-135 and Se-79 were analyzed by Monte Carlo stochastic simulation. The results show that the migration characteristics of Cs-135 and Se-79 in intact rock are direct influenced by hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic gradient, the migration velocity are 2.47×10-4m/a and 9.61×10-4m/a when the hydraulic conductivity correspond to 5.74 ×10-9 m/s. The analysis of the results shows that the migration characteristics can provide feedback guidance for the site selection and design of the disposal repository. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The lack of fresh water has accelerated efforts to improve the current treatment technology for the reclamation of wastewater. Simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (known as SND) for nitrogen removal has drawn increasing attention due to its’ high efficiency and low cost. Comparing with traditional nitrogen removal, SND process can achieve simultaneous nitrification and denitrification within a reactor unit. Despite considerable efforts of SND strains isolation from various environment, SND application and its influencing parameters, the nitrogen removal mechanism are poorly elicited and represent major challenges in SND basic study and application. The review begins with an update on current state of knowledge on SND functioning strains isolation and is followed by SND engineering applications and the associated key impact parameters study. The advantages and shortcomings of SND engineering application are also concluded to provide theoretical and technical support for practical engineering applications optimization. The following topics are the highlights and discussion on the metabolic pathway and denitrification mechanism of SND, including the most recent discovery of a novel oxidase dnfA (oxidizes hydroxylamine to N₂) in SND strain, Alcaligenes sp. HO-1. Finally, the challenges of SND metabolic pathway and SND engineering application are recommended for future directions and the related strategies are proposed. Specifically, the paper proposed the study on SND nitrogen removal mechanism using multi-omics strategy. Understanding the SND nitrogen removal mechanism will help us to apply SND more efficiently for nitrogen removal from wastewater. © 2022 The Authors

Taxonomy plays an important role in understanding the origin, evolution, and ecological functionality of biodiversity. There are large number of unknown species yet to be described by taxonomists, which together with their ecosystem services cannot be effectively protected prior to description. Despite this, taxonomy has been increasingly underrated insufficient funds and permanent positions to retain young talents. Further, the impact factordriven evaluation systems in China exacerbate this downward trend, so alternative evaluation metrics are urgently necessary. When the current generation of outstanding taxonomists retires,there will be too few remaining taxonomists left to train the next generation. In light of these challenges, all co-authors worked together on this paper to analyze the current situation of taxonomy and put out a joint call for immediate actions to advance taxonomy in China.
