Microplastics and nanoplastics are distributed in the environments universally. The interrelationship between vascular plants and micro/nanoplastics began to attract attention in recent years. Based on the relevant literatures collected from various databases, this review focuses on two topics: 1) the effect of vascular plants on the fate of micro/nanoplastics; 2) the effects of micro/nanoplastics on vascular plants. The review of the available studies reveals that vascular plants can act as sinks for microplastics and nanoplastics as their surfaces can adsorb these plastics; moreover, nanoplastics can be internalized by plants. Plastics on the surfaces and in the interiors of vascular plants can cause various phytotoxicity effects, including impacts on growth, photosynthesis, and oxidative stress. Furthermore, the results and mechanisms of phytotoxicity effects caused by microplastics or nanoplastics can be very different. However, knowledge gaps still exist in the relationships between micro/nanoplastics and vascular plants based on the analysis of available studies; thus, potential subjects for future studies were proposed, including the fates, analysis methods, influencing factors, mechanisms of phytotoxicity, and further influences of microplastics and nanoplastics in the vascular plant ecosystems. This study presents a review of micro/nanoplastics-vascular plant research and reaches a basis for future research.

Laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) aroused intensive concerns for the merits of label-free and high-throughput analysis. Here, we designed a silver nanoparticles (AgNP)-modified indium vanadate nanosheets with doping samarium (AgNP@InVO4:Sm) nanosheets. The developed AgNP@InVO4:Sm nanosheets (AIVON) were synthesized based on the microemulsion-mediated solvothermal method and ultraviolet-assisted in situ formation of AgNP, then for the first time applied as a matrix in LDI-MS analysis. With the advantages including enhanced MS signal, little matrix-related background, high reproducibility, and good salt tolerance, AIVON exhibited much better prospect than non-modified indium vanadate nanosheets with doping samarium (IVON) and traditional organic matrix, thus allowing sensitive MS detection for a wide range of low-molecular-weight (LMW) molecules. Moreover, by coupling with headspace sampling thin-film microextraction (TFME), a kind of representative pollutant chlorophenols were identified and quantified via AIVON-assisted LDI-MS in environmental and biological samples. Volatile LMW pollutants could be preconcentrated after TFME, hence a sensitive and rapid assay with negligible sample matrix effect was realized by using AIVON-assisted LDI-MS. It is anticipated that this novel nano-matrix AIVON and the proposed TFME coupling detection strategy were of competitive merits for LDI-MS analysis in the fields of environment, biomedicine, and agriculture. © 2023, The Authors. The study of migration velocity of Cs-135 and Se-79 in intact rock

The migration characteristics of highly mobile nuclides in natural barrier are the key concerns in the long-term safety assessment of geological disposal facilities. This paper focused on typical granite in Beishan area for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, and established a computational model for the release and migrate of nuclides after closure of repository by GoldSim. The migration characteristics of Cs-135 and Se-79 were analyzed by Monte Carlo stochastic simulation. The results show that the migration characteristics of Cs-135 and Se-79 in intact rock are direct influenced by hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic gradient, the migration velocity are 2.47×10-4m/a and 9.61×10-4m/a when the hydraulic conductivity correspond to 5.74 ×10-9 m/s. The analysis of the results shows that the migration characteristics can provide feedback guidance for the site selection and design of the disposal repository.

Microplastic pollution has recently gained increasing attention. The accumulation of microplastics in plants has been confirmed in the marine environment. However, the extent of the microplastic retention in freshwater plants is still unknown. In this study, sediment and plant samples from six reed farms in the wetland of East Dongting Lake were collected and analyzed. The abundance of microplastics in the sediment of reed farms varied from 125.7 to 1219.5 items/kg dry weight (dw), with an average of 511.2 ± 295.0 items/kg. Moreover, different levels of microplastic abundance were found in reeds from 0 to 14 items/individual. The abundance of microplastics in sediment samples was moderate compared to that worldwide and higher than that in other regions of Dongting Lake. The microplastic pollution level was significantly higher in the reed vegetation belt than that in other sampling positions. On the basis of the distribution and characteristics of the collected microplastics, lake water and fishery are suggested as important sources of microplastics. Furthermore, the factors influencing microplastic retention in the reeds are discussed. This study, as the first direct evidence demonstrating that freshwater reeds tend to accumulate microplastics, constitutes valuable reference for future research.

Process and kinetics of azo dye decolourization in bioelectrochemical systems: effect of several key factors

This study explored the influence of several key factors on the process and kinetics of azo dye decolourization in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), including cathode potential, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of catholyte and biofilm formed on the cathode. The results show that azo dye methyl orange (MO) decolourization in the BES could be well described with the pseudo first-order kinetics. The MO decolourization efficiency increased from 0 to 94.90 ± 0.01% and correspondingly the reaction rate constant increased from 0 to 0.503 ± 0.001 h(-1) with the decrease in cathodic electrode potential from -0.2 to -0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl. On the contrary, DO concentration of the catholyte had a negative impact on MO decolourization in the BES. When DO concentration increased from zero to 5.80 mg L(-1), the MO decolourization efficiency decreased from 87.19 ± 4.73% to 27.77 ± 0.06% and correspondingly the reaction rate constant reduced from 0.207 ± 0.042 to 0.033 ± 0.007 h(-1). Additionally, the results suggest that the biofilm formed on the cathode could led to an adverse rather than a positive effect on azo dye decolourization in the BES in terms of efficiency and kinetics.

The lack of fresh water has accelerated efforts to improve the current treatment technology for the reclamation of wastewater. Simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (known as SND) for nitrogen removal has drawn increasing attention due to its’ high efficiency and low cost. Comparing with traditional nitrogen removal, SND process can achieve simultaneous nitrification and denitrification within a reactor unit. Despite considerable efforts of SND strains isolation from various environment, SND application and its influencing parameters, the nitrogen removal mechanism are poorly elicited and represent major challenges in SND basic study and application. The review begins with an update on current state of knowledge on SND functioning strains isolation and is followed by SND engineering applications and the associated key impact parameters study. The advantages and shortcomings of SND engineering application are also concluded to provide theoretical and technical support for practical engineering applications optimization. The following topics are the highlights and discussion on the metabolic pathway and denitrification mechanism of SND, including the most recent discovery of a novel oxidase dnfA (oxidizes hydroxylamine to N₂) in SND strain, Alcaligenes sp. HO-1. Finally, the challenges of SND metabolic pathway and SND engineering application are recommended for future directions and the related strategies are proposed. Specifically, the paper proposed the study on SND nitrogen removal mechanism using multi-omics strategy. Understanding the SND nitrogen removal mechanism will help us to apply SND more efficiently for nitrogen removal from wastewater. © 2022 The Authors

Taxonomy plays an important role in understanding the origin, evolution, and ecological functionality of biodiversity. There are large number of unknown species yet to be described by taxonomists, which together with their ecosystem services cannot be effectively protected prior to description. Despite this, taxonomy has been increasingly underrated insufficient funds and permanent positions to retain young talents. Further, the impact factordriven evaluation systems in China exacerbate this downward trend, so alternative evaluation metrics are urgently necessary. When the current generation of outstanding taxonomists retires,there will be too few remaining taxonomists left to train the next generation. In light of these challenges, all co-authors worked together on this paper to analyze the current situation of taxonomy and put out a joint call for immediate actions to advance taxonomy in China.

Statins are widely used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia disease,which are refractory in the municipal sewage treatment *** photocatalytic degradation of statins by the Z-scheme heterostructured photocatalyst is confirmed,but the degradation mechanism of statins needs to be further *** this study,the effects of photocatalyst dosage,solution pH and humic acid(HA)on the photocatalysis of fluvastatin by ZnIn_(2)S_(4)/Bi_(2)WO_(6) Z-scheme heterostructured photocatalyst(ZIS/BWO photocatalyst)were investigated and the degradation mechanism was *** showed that adsorption of fluvastatin was improved with the increase of photocatalyst dosage,but photoinduced desorption and light scattering resulted in the decrease of the removal of fluvastatin with high dosage.0.2 g/L of the ZIS/BWO photocatalyst was optimal dosage.65.21%of fluvastatin was removed at pH=9,because high concentration of OH^(-)was conducive to produce·*** change of pH,competition of photons and active sites,and trapping of reactive oxygen species(ROS)by carboxyl group of HA combined to inhibit the photocatalysis of fluvastatin in the presence of *** C–C,C=C and C–N bonds of fluvastatin were attacked by a variety of ROS to generate degradable intermediates that were easily mineralized to H_(2)O and CO_(2).

Application Research of GPR in Quality Detection of Urban Underground Jacked Pipes Construction

Nowadays, pipe jacking method is usually adopted in the construction of urban underground pipelines. In order to ensure the construction quality of pipe jacking method, geophysical non-destructive prospecting methods are used for detecting the compactness around the jacked pipes. Based on the theory of ground penetrating radar (GPR), the void models of jacked pipes with two different materials (i.e. cement pipe and steel pipe) were established, and the finite element method was used to simulate the 2D forward modeling of GPR. At the same time, combined with the urban underground jacked pipes construction project in Xiangtan city, hunan province, China, GPR was used to carry out field prospection of the quality of jacked pipes construction. The results of forward simulation and practical applications show that good results can be obtained when GPR is used to detect the construction quality of cement pipes, which is the same as that of using GPR to detect the construction quality of tunnel. But the collected signals are not effective when the steel pipes are detected, which is because the radar signal cannot penetrate the steel pipe, and there are multiple reflections between the radar antenna and the pipe wall. Therefore, new non-destructive prospecting methods are needed for void detection of steel jacked pipes.

Iodide anion (I − ) is one of the most-problematic radioactive nuclides in used nuclear fuel due to its intrinsic characteristics of a high toxicity and environmental mobility. Therefore, effective and selective elimination of I − from nuclear contaminated solution is highly beneficial for the pollution remediation purposes in the development of nuclear power, but is of significant challenge owing to the extreme conditions of the high acidity, strong ionizing radiation field and high concentration of competing anions. Herein, a novel core–shell [email protected] 2 O (ZC) encapsulated Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) nanocomposites have been fabricated via a facile one step self-assembly process and an environmentally friendly technique. The as-fabricated [email protected] @Cu 2 O (ZAC) nanocomposites were characterized and applied to capture of I − from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies revealed that the ternary nanocomposites showed fast removal kinetics, high photooxidation-adsorption capacity (up to 217.4 mg g −1 at pH = 3 for ZAC-2), satisfactory selectivity and high acidity resistance. Furthermore, the nanocomposites also exhibited a good reusability, as no significant change in the uptake capacity was observed even after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. Inspired by the superior features, a possible mechanism (chemical adsorption coupled with photooxidations) was proposed based on XRD, XPS and Raman spectra analysis for the pre- and post-adsorbed samples as well as the detailed adsorption experimental evidence.
