Wearing of vehicle parts could release many chemical additives into the environment, such as benzotriazoles (BTRs), benzothiazoles (BTHs), and p -phenylenediamines (PPDs), which are potentially toxic to wildlife and humans. This study investigates the occurrence, source, and risks of BTRs, BTHs, and PPDs in a source catchment providing water to Guangzhou, a megacity in South China, covering groundwater, surface water, and stormwater. The results showed that BTRs and BTHs were predominant in surface water and groundwater. Unexpectedly, the BTR and BTH concentrations were lower in surface water than groundwater in a third of the paired samples. For the first time, 6PPD-quinone, a toxic ozonation product of N -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)- N' -phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6PPD), was extensively detected in source waters. Stormwater decreased the BTR concentrations but increased the 6PPD-quinone concentrations in surface water owing to their affiliation to suspended particles. From natural to urban segments of Liuxi river, a downstream increasing trend in BTR and BTH concentrations was observed, confirming that they are indicative of urban anthropogenic activities. Strong correlations between industrial activities and BTR or BTH concentrations in surface water indicated that industrial activities were their main sources. Six compounds were prioritized as potentially persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) chemicals, combing our monitoring results and REACH criterion. This study improves our understanding of the environmental fates and risks of water-soluble tire-wear chemicals, which provide important information for chemical management, and indicates attention should be paid to the risk posed by 6PPD-quinone in source water. © 2022, The Authors. Study of the vanadium extraction behaviour of hydroxamic extractants with alkane substituents

Hydroxamic extractants have demonstrated efficacy in vanadium extraction, and prior research has indicated that reductive back-extraction is an effective method for this purpose. However, the temperatures required for stripping are relatively high. In this study, the extraction behaviour of 2-hydroxy-5-nonylbenzaldehyde oxime, 2-hydroxy-12-nonylbenzaldehyde oxime and 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime with different substituent groups was compared for the extraction of vanadium in terms of extraction, stripping and the number of extraction stages. The findings demonstrated that the more pronounced electron-donating effect of the methyl group in comparison to that of the H atom serves to enhance the acidity of the hydroxamic extractant, while simultaneously decreasing the reactivity of the chelate structure of vanadium. Conversely, an increase in the length of the branched alkane carbon chain has a less pronounced effect on the acidity of the hydroxamic extractant and the stability of the chelate structure of vanadium. © 2025

Thallium is an extremely toxic metal and abundant in industrial wastewater but little studied. In order to understand the optimal adsorption kinetic parameters of the chelating resin containing hydrazine wastewater, we carried out adsorption experiments on the cerium-containing wastewater treated by chemical precipitation. In this chapter, the optimum adsorption conditions, adsorption model, dynamic adsorption curve and desorption and regeneration of adsorbent were determined at different pH, temperature, adsorption time and different adsorbent dosage. The results show that the removal rate of thallium wastewater by resin is up to 97.5% when the pH value is 9. The optimum adsorption temperature is 30 and the adsorption reached equilibrium at 80 min. The adsorption process is consistent with Lagergren quasi-second-order adsorption and Langmuir isotherm model. The regenerative properties of the resin show that the resin adsorption rates still reach 95.8% after repeat use for six times. In summary, the chelating resin has good adsorption and reusability to the thallium-containing wastewater. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2019.

In this study, three ball-milled phosphorus-rich biochars (BMPBs, 1-3) were fabricated based on biochar-to-ball ratios of 1:60, 1:80, and 1:100, respectively. Subsequently, their efficacy in remediating soil contaminated with arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) was assessed. The ball milling process endowed biochar with enhanced specific surface area (66.4-98.1 m2 g-1) and intensity of functional groups (e.g., C=O and C–O–C). The BMPB addition decreased the soil-available As concentration by 21.4%-25.5%, while only the BMPB-3 treatment caused a significant reduction (14.4%) in the soil-available Sb concentration. Furthermore, BMPB-3 treatment showed the highest increase of 67.4% in the phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) concentration of Gram-negative bacteria compared to the control, highlighting a positive modulation of microbial community in soils. The application of biochar, particularly BMPB-3, was more effective in promoting the development of iron plaques that enhanced the sequestration of As/Sb in rice roots, ultimately leading to 54.6% and 61.3% reductions in As and Sb uptake by rice grains, respectively. Plant physiological responses indicated that BMPB treatment could mitigate oxidative stress in rice roots by reducing the contents of malondialdehyde and proline due to the activation of catalase and superoxide dismutase activities. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis indicated that soil properties and the formation of iron plaques after biochar application were pivotal for the bioavailability, translocation, accumulation, and detoxification of As and Sb within soil-rice systems. BMPB-3 is considered as an optimal amendment for remediating As-Sb co-contaminated soil and thereby enhancing rice yield and quality. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this study, we introduce a straightforward method that integrates solvothermal processing with photo-deposition to synthesize a novel zinc quantum dots-modified zinc tungstate (Zn QDs/ZnWO 4 ) photocatalyst. The optimized Zn QDs/ZnWO 4 photocatalyst demonstrated outstanding performance in removing Cr(VI). The reduction rate constant reached an impressive 5.99 × 10 −2 min −1 , marking a significant 3.2-fold enhancement compared to bare ZnWO 4 . The exceptional photocatalytic activity of Zn QDs/ZnWO 4 can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Zn QDs and oxygen vacancies. Oxygen vacancies generated during photo-deposition serve as potent electron traps, effectively inhibiting electron-hole recombination and enhancing charge separation efficiency. Zn QDs contribute synergistically through surface modification and band structure engineering. Their uniform deposition on ZnWO 4 increases surface roughness and active sites, expanding the effective reaction area. Simultaneously, Zn QDs optimize the composite’s band alignment, broadening reduction pathways for Cr(VI) and enabling enhanced photocatalytic efficiency for its removal. Moreover, Zn QDs/ZnWO 4 exhibited remarkable reusability, maintaining its efficiency and stability over 10 cycles of use without significant performance loss. This makes it a highly promising candidate for practical applications in environmental purification. Our findings highlight the key role of Zn QDs and oxygen vacancies in boosting photocatalytic performance, offering valuable insights for designing novel, efficient, eco-friendly photocatalysts.

Application of a new reagent O-(2-methylpropyl) N-prop-2-enylcarbamothioate in industrial purification of zinc sulfides: Practice study

In view of the toughening environmental regulations and the deteriorating market environment, the development of clean, cost-effective beneficiation technologies is increasingly urgent. Hereby, an alkali-free Zn beneficiating technology developed based on collector O-(2-methylpropyl) N-prop-2-enylcarbamothioate (MPECT) is being introduced. Single mineral and binary mineral mixture tests suggest that the technology presents the potential to separate sphalerite and pyrite, with the collector MPECT providing excellent collection for CuSO 4 -activated sphalerite and sodium metabisulfite (NaMBS) giving good depression of pyrite under neutral pulp pH. The bench-scale closed-circuit flotation tests showed that the technology is suitable for the beneficiation of complex actual ore, and is capable of obtaining high-grade Zn concentrates featuring high recovery. Lastly, following the validation of numerous laboratory flotation experiments, the alkali-free technology was successfully applied in industrial production. The application results show that the technology enjoys significant advantages over the original technology, increasing Zn recovery from 93.03% to 93.54% while maintaining a close Zn grade of Zn concentrate. This translates into an increased revenue of 294,438 USD, and simultaneously reducing reagent costs by 208,000 USD for the Huangshaping Lead-Zinc Concentrator. Given the economic attractiveness of MPECT reagent scheme, the alkali-free Zn beneficiating technology is poised to be widely used in industry.

Nearly half of all Asian non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients harbour epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, and first-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are one of the first-line treatments that have improved the outcomes of these patients. Unfortunately, 20% of these patients can not benefit from the treatment. The basis of this primary resistance is poorly understood. Therefore, overcoming EGFR-TKI primary resistance and maintaining the efficacy of TKIs has become a key issue. β-Elemene, a sesquiterpene compound extracted from Curcuma aromatica Salisb. (wenyujing), has shown potent antitumor effects. In this research, we found that β-elemene combined with erlotinib enhanced the cytotoxicity of erlotinib to primary EGFR-TKI-resistant NSCLC cells with EGFR mutations and that ferroptosis was involved in the antitumor effect of the combination treatment. We found that lncRNA H19 was significantly downregulated in primary EGFR-TKI-resistant NSCLC cell lines and was upregulated by the combination treatment. Overexpression or knockdown of H19 conferred sensitivity or resistance to erlotinib, respectively, in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The high level of H19 enhanced the cytotoxicity of erlotinib by inducing ferroptosis. In conclusion, our data showed that β-elemene combined with erlotinib could enhance sensitivity to EGFR-TKIs through induction of ferroptosis via H19 in primary EGFR-TKI-resistant lung cancer, providing a promising strategy to overcome EGFR-TKI resistance in NSCLC patients. © 2023 The Authors

Sustainable fabrication of hierarchical porous graphitic carbon from banana peduncle via self-template and self-activation for high-performance sorption of phthalate easters

In this study, we propose a simple and sustainable strategy to fabricate hierarchical porous graphitic carbon (HPGC) through the direct pyrolysis of banana peduncle, in which the naturally occurring potassium-rich components allow it to act as carbon source, template, and self-activator all in one. During pyrolysis, the formation of KCl and K 2 CO 3 enabled simultaneous carbonization and self-template/self-activation of banana peduncle, eliminating the need for exogenous chemicals. The resulting HPGC exhibited high graphitization, hydrophobicity, and a large specific surface area of 1686.30 m 2 g −1 , with a hierarchical pore structure dominated by micropores (peaking at 0.86 nm) and narrow mesopores (<4.0 nm). HPGC achieved exceptional sorption capacities of 730.63 and 833.44 mg g −1 for dimethyl phthalate and diethyl phthalate, respectively, within 2 h, significantly outperforming most reported sorbents. The superior performance is attributed to the developed pore structure and large surface area, which provided abundant sorption sites through pore-filling and surface coverage. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic π-conjugated carbon framework of HPGC facilitated the sorption via hydrophobic effects, π-π electron donor–acceptor interactions, and π-π stacking. Additionally, hydrogen bonding may be involved, but with minor contribution. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the sorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, driven primarily by hydrophobic effects, resulting in an entropy gain in systems. The stronger sorption of diethyl phthalate compared with dimethyl phthalate was attributed to stronger hydrophobic interaction with HPGC. This work highlights a novel, cost-efficient, and environmental-friendly approach to synthesizing high-performance porous carbon for phthalate easters removal, offering significant potential for large-scale applications in water remediation.

Weak magnetic field stimulated nitrite oxidizing bacteria and destroyed the SNAD process

Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process was successfully constructed in a fixed bed reactor. The ammonium and TN removal efficiencies exceeded 90% under the collaboration of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB), anammox and denitrifying bacteria (DNB). However, the well cooperation was interrupted after introducing the weak MF of 3.5 mT, which was reflected directly by the increased nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) activity and decreased AOB, anammox and DNB activities calculated via mass balance. Moreover, drastic microbial community structure changes induced by weak MF were observed. The dominant phylum changed from Proteobacteria (25.6%) to Deferribacteres (35.2%). The weak MF suppressed the growth of AOB (genus Nitrosomanas), anammox (genus Candidatus Brocadia and clone Anammox) and DNB (genus Denitratisoma) while promoted the enrichment of NOB (genus Nitrospira). Moreover, the weakened NH3-NH2OH, NO-N2O and N2O-N2 pathways might explain the deterioration of SNAD process caused by weak MF. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd
