The integration of inverter-based distributed generation challenges the implementation of an reliable protection This work proposes an adaptive protection method for coordinating protection systems using directional overcurrent relays, where the settings depend on the distribution network operating conditions. The coordination problem is addressed through a specialized genetic algorithm, aiming to minimize the total operating times of relays with time-delayed operation. The pickup current is also optimized. Coordination diagrams from diverse fault scenarios illustrate the method's adaptability to different operational conditions, emphasizing the importance of employing multiple setting groups for optimal protection system performance. The proposed technique provides high-quality solutions, enhancing reliability compared to traditional protection schemes.

This paper addresses the stability analysis of a real island power system following the transformation occurring in the generation portfolio: from a 100 % synchronous-generation-based system (associated to a fleet of diesel generators) to a hybrid power system dominated by power electronics converters. The integration of a battery-wind-photovoltaic power plant in the island creates the necessary conditions for operating the system without synchronous units-scenarios with a system dominated by power electronics - or, at least to minimize its use-scenarios with a reduced number of synchronous units in operation. The possibility of operating the system under these conditions is assured by grid-forming inverters connected to battery energy storage systems, that are responsible for performing frequency and voltage control tasks either in parallel with synchronous units or when synchronous units are disconnected. The resulting transient stability issues for the aforementioned operational scenarios are discussed and evaluated through dynamic simulations.

Renewable energy communities (REC) and local energy markets (LEM) emerge as entities capable, not only to promote the penetration of renewable energy sources into lower levels of the grid, but also to manage distributed energy resources (DER) and local energy exchanges between small players. This paper proposes a benefit assessment among different regulatory frameworks for LEM, considering network constraints and a virtual storage unit. Results show significant savings can be achieved, even without storage. Therefore, the continuous increase of DER can have considerable grid impacts if not complemented by other structures as storage or by alternative market services like flexibility.

The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) imposes challenges to the operation of distribution networks. This paper conducts a systematic assessment of the impact of DER on distribution network overcurrent protection, considering the behavior of Inverter Based Resources (IBR) during faults in the coordination of medium voltage (MV) feeders’ overcurrent protection. Through a detailed analysis of various scenarios, we propose adaptive protection solutions that enhance the reliability and resilience of distribution networks in the face of growing renewable energy integration. Results highlight the advantages of using adaptive protection over traditional methods and topology changes, and delve into current protection strategies, identifying limitations and proposing mitigation strategies.

Increasing the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) imposes several challenges in power distribution networks. Developed Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) provides fast and efficient charging of EVs at the Public Charging Stations (PCS). These chargers benefit from balanced three-phase chargers with considerable power consumption. Hence, the optimal management and task scheduling for EVSE should be arranged in such a way as to avoid overloading network infrastructure or imposing new peaks on the distribution networks. On the other hand, energy management in the presence of high renewable energy penetration due to installed Photovoltaic (PV) panels at the low-voltage (LV) distribution network should be elaborated to minimize the renewable power curtailment. Hence, this paper presents a novel model to address the optimal scheduling of charging stations availability and unlocking the Demand Response (DR) potentials at the distribution networks with highly penetrated PV panels. The energy management model is represented as a standard Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem which can be solved by open-source solvers. The proposed model is tested for a real case study in Portugal to demonstrate the functionality of the developed tool.

In recent years, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have gained prominence in the most varied fields of application of underwater missions. The most common solution for recharging their batteries still implies removing them from the water, which is exceptionally costly. The use of Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) technologies allows to mitigate the associated costs and to extend the vehicles' operation time. In consequence, a prototype has been developed, whose objective is to integrate commercially available IPT technologies, while allowing the employment by most of the AUVs. The prototype is a funnel structure and its counterpart aimed to be fixed to a docking station and the AUV respectively. When coupled, it enables the batteries to recharge by electromagnetic induction. Energy transmission has been tested, resulting in encouraging results. This particular solution achieved over 90% efficiency during underwater experiments. The next objective will be to develop a commercial version of the prototype, that allows a direct, practical and effective use of wireless charging technologies within this particular scenario.

Over time, the electricity price and energy consumption are increasingly growing their weight as prime foundations of the electrical sector, with their analysis and forecasts being targeted as key elements for the stable maintenance of electricity markets. The advent of smart grids is escalating the importance of forecasting because of the expected ubiquitous monitoring and growing complexity of a data-rich ever-changing milieu. So, the increasing data volatility will require forecasting tools able to rapidly readjust to a dynamic environment. The Generalized Regression Neural Network (GRNN) approach is a solution that has recently re-emerged, emphasizing good performance, fast run-times and ease of parameterization. The merging of this model with more conventional methods allows us to obtain more sturdy solutions with shortened training times, when compared to conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Overall, the performance of the GRNN, although slightly inferior to that of the ANN, is suitable, but linked to much lower training times. Ultimately, the GRNN would be a proper solution to blend with the latest smart grids features, which may require much reduced forecasting training times.

This paper aims to describe an approach to create a useful and effective solution to facilitate the reading of musical scores during the performance or study of pieces, using the aid of Mixed Reality (MR), mobile devices, digital scores, and Data Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). MR can be defined as a system that combines physical objects with virtual objects. MIDI is a digital file containing musical notation information that can be interpreted by electronic devices. In this project, we aim to use HoloLens glasses and mobile devices, such as tablets or smartphones. The HoloLens are devices that can be used to create realistic holograms to visually represent the scores. The use of the various devices is intended to make the performance easier. The proposed approach aims to interpret scores in MIDI format and present them in hologram format to the MR glasses and graphical format to the mobile devices. In parallel, the system should be able to synchronize the presentation between different devices. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper addresses the use of heterogeneous sensors for target detection and recognition in maritime environment. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle payload was assembled using hyperspectral, infrared, electro-optical, AIS and INS information to collect synchronized sensor data with vessel ground-truth position for conducting air and sea trials. The data collected is used to develop automated robust methods for detect and recognize vessels based on their exogenous physical characteristics and their behaviour across time. Data Processing preliminary results are also presented.

Ovarian Structures Detection using Convolutional Neural Networks

The detection of ovarian structures from ultrasound images is an important task in gynecological and reproductive medicine. An automatic detection system of ovarian structures can work as a second opinion for less experienced physicians or complex ultrasound interpretations. This work presents a study of three popular CNN-based object detectors applied to the detection of healthy ovarian structures, namely ovary and follicles, in B-mode ultrasound images. The Faster R-CNN presented the best results, with a precision of 95.5% and a recall of 94.7% for both classes, being able to detect all the ovaries correctly. The RetinaNet showed competitive results, exceeding 90% of precision and recall. Despite being very fast and suitable for real-time applications, YOLOv3 was ineffective in detecting ovaries and had the worst results detecting follicles. We also compare CNN results with classical computer vision methods presented in the ovarian follicle detection literature.
