The academic world is becoming increasingly interested in the applications of Artificial Intelligence technology in education. A systematic review examines AI applications in education, focusing on their effectiveness, challenges, and implications. A comprehensive analysis of studies published between 2011 and 2024 encompassed 45 research articles from major databases, such as PubMed Central, IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, Springer, MDPI, ACM, and PMC. The findings highlight the predominant use of generative AI tools like ChatGPT (30%), followed by other advanced technologies, such as GPT-4, machine learning, and virtual reality. Research across global regions, particularly in Canada (18%), the United States (12%), and China (8%), highlights the multifaceted applications of AI in enhancing personalized learning, fostering critical thinking, and supporting professional education. Tools such as ChatGPT have demonstrated strong performance in theoretical knowledge delivery and medical education, while augmented and virtual reality excels in practical skill development. Despite these advances, challenges such as data privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, and the need for specialized educator training remain critical. © 2025 The Author(s)

An emerging concept in railway management is to reduce the distance between consecutive trains, actively controlling their separation in order to enforce a continued safe distance. This concept is referred to as "Virtual Coupling" and it needs highly reliable and fast, real-time wireless communication systems. In this respect, TSCH was introduced in the IEEE 802.15.4e amendment to improve reliability of communication. Recent studies addressed the fast joining time problem where different traffic schedules must be merged when different communication domains come together. In this paper, we study the hoping strategy involved in TSCH to derive the probability of successful hopping upon merging. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of sigma-delta modulation (SDM) as a means of improving the performance of underwater optical communication systems. The study considers the impact of the key parameters of SDM, including oversampling ratio, the system’s signal-to-noise ratio, bandwidth, and optical link distance. The results of this study provide insights into the design and optimization of SDM-based underwater optical communication systems, paving the way for future research in this field. A fully digital solution, albeit operating at a lower bit rate than previously published OFDM counterparts, provides immunity against nonlinearities of the system and robustness to noise, which is relevant in harsh environments. Moreover, the proposed solution based on a first-order bandpass SDM architecture avoids the employment of a DAC at the receiver, simplifying its operation and reducing costs. An experimental investigation is carried out for the transmission of 16-QAM over SDM, and a transmission distance of 4.8 m over the underwater channel is achieved with a maximum transmission rate of 400 Mbit/s with an MER of 28 dB.

This paper analyzes the electricity prices of the MIBEL electricity spot market with respect to a set of possible explanatory variables. Understanding the main drivers of the electricity price is a key aspect in understanding price formation and in developing forecasting models, which are essential for the selling and buying strategies of market agents. For this analysis, different techniques have been applied in this work, including standard and lasso regression models, causal analysis based on bayesian networks and classification trees. Results from the different approaches are coherent and show strong dependency of the electricity prices with the Portuguese imported coal for lower non-dispatchable net demands, which has been progressively replaced by gas for larger non-dispatchable net demands. Hydro reservoirs and hydro production are also main explanatory variables of the electricity price for all non-dispatchable net demand levels.

This paper analyzes the activation of the manual balancing reserve of the Portuguese system and its prices for the period 2015-2017. Standard, logistic and LASSO regression models, causal analysis based on Bayesian networks and random forests are applied. Results show that the variables that better explain the activation of the manual reserve are the imbalances of both renewable generation and demand, but surprisingly forecasted with persistence models based on the last verified measurements (available 15 minutes before the reserve activation), instead of using more elaborated models based on production forecasts. Prices, however, are harder to explain suggesting the need for additional information, such as bidding prices not used in this study.

Case studies of development of verified programs with Dafny for accessibility assessment

Formal verification techniques aim at formally proving the correctness of a computer program with respect to a formal specification, but the expertise and effort required for applying formal specification and verification techniques and scalability issues have limited their practical application. In recent years, the tremendous progress with SAT and SMT solvers enabled the construction of a new generation of tools that promise to make formal verification more accessible for software engineers, by automating most if not all of the verification process. The Dafny system is a prominent example of that trend. However, little evidence exists yet about its accessibility. To help fill this gap, we conducted a set of 10 case studies of developing verified implementations in Dafny of some real-world algorithms and data structures, to determine its accessibility for software engineers. We found that, on average, the amount of code written for specification and verification purposes is of the same order of magnitude as the traditional code written for implementation and testing purposes (ratio of 1.14) – an "overhead" that certainly pays off for high-integrity software. The performance of the Dafny verifier was impressive, with 2.4 proof obligations generated per line of code written, and 24 ms spent per proof obligation generated and verified, on average. However, we also found that the manual work needed in writing auxiliary verification code may be significant and difficult to predict and master. Hence, further automation and systematization of verification tasks are possible directions for future advances in the field. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The extraction of geometric information from the environment may be of interest to localisation and mapping algorithms. Existent literature on extracting geometric features from 2D laser data focuses mainly on detecting lines. Regarding corners, most methodologies use the intersection of line segment features. This paper presents a feature extraction algorithm for corner-like points in the 2D laser scan. The proposed methodol-ogy defines arrival and departure neighbourhoods around each scan point and performs local line fitting evaluated in multiple distance-based scales. Then, a set of indicators based on line fitting error, the angle between arrival and departure lines, and consecutive observation of the same keypoint across different scales determine the existence of a corner-like feature. The experiments evaluated the corner-like features regarding their relative position and observability, achieving standard deviations on the relative position lower than the sensor noise and visibility ratios higher than 75% with very low false positives rates. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper describes a two-month summer intensive course designed to introduce participants with a hands-on technical craft on robotics and to acquire experience in the low-level details of embedded systems. Attendants started this course with a brief introduction to robotics;learned to draw, design and create a personalized 3D structure for their mobile robotic platform and developed skills in embedded systems. They were familiarize with the practices used in robotics, learning to connect all sensors and actuator, developing a typical application on differential kinematic using Arduino, exploring ROS features under Raspberry Pi environment and Arduino – Raspberry Pi communication. Different paradigms and some real applications and programming were addressed on the topic of Artificial Intelligence. Throughout the course, participants were introduced to programming languages (including Python and C++), advanced programming concepts such as ROS, basic API development, system concepts such as I2C and UART serial interfaces, PWM motor control and sensor fusion to improve robotic navigation and localization. This paper describes not just the concept, layout and methodology used on RobotCraft 2017 but also presents the participants knowledge background and their overall opinions, leading to focus on lessons learned and suggestions for future editions. © 2018, N.M. For the context of a mobile tracking system, an underwater acoustic positioning system was developed, using three hydrophones to compute the direction of an acoustic source relative to an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV). The paper presents an algorithm for the Direction of Arrival (DoA) of an acoustic source, which allows to estimate its position. Preliminary results will be shown in this paper relative to the detection and identification (ID) of the acoustic sources, as well as an analysis of the proposed algorithm. The solution allows the position estimation of an acoustic source, which can be used in tracking solutions. The system can be applied in an ASV or fixed buoys, as long as the baseline's hydrophones are at equal angular distances. The main objective is to track targets with the DoA algorithm as well to estimate their position, improving what was done in [1].
