Energy allocation rules are one of the core aspects of collective self-consumption (CSC) regulations. It allows final consumers to share their surplus generation with other CSC members, while keeping their full rights as consumers, i.e., maintaining a supply contract with the retailers of their choice. Some European Union member states regulations use allocation coefficients so that local allocations are integrated with wholesale settlement and directly affect the retailers' billing. Several AC methods have been proposed so far, each one adapted to distribution system operators' settlement procedures with specific rules that can impact the benefits that each CSC member obtain. This paper analyses, assesses and compares two relevant AC methods, namely pre-delivery fixed AC and post-delivery dynamic AC, by developing a settlement formulation for a community with members with flexible assets and different opportunity costs. AC policy recommendations based on findings are provided.

Conciliating the Settlement of Local Energy Markets with Self-Consumption Regulations

Regulations for collective self-consumption are often based on energy allocation coefficients that determine what amount of the consumption measured for each member of the community is supplied by its retailer, and what is supplied locally. However, these allocation coefficients may not represent correctly how communities desire to share the locally generated energy, since they very often do not consider the ownership of the generation units in the community nor the energy traded internally. This paper describes and discusses the common rules that regulate collective self-consumption and energy sharing in energy communities and the roles model of the main stakeholders involved. Then, a general energy sharing and settlement framework based on dynamic allocation coefficients is developed, including the financial adjustments needed when less efficient allocation coefficients are used. Finally, a set of regulatory proposals to improve existing regulations on local energy sharing or trading in energy communities is discussed. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Diagnosis of health disorders relies heavily on detecting biological data and accurately observing pathological changes. A significant challenge lies in detecting targeted biological signals and developing reliable sensing technology for clinically relevant results. The combination of data analytics with the sensing abilities of Optical Fiber Tweezers (OFT) provides a high-capability, multifunctional biosensing approach for biophotonic tools. In this work, we introduced phase as a new domain to obtain light patterns in OFT back-scattering signals. By applying a multivariate data analysis procedure, we extract phase spectral information for discriminating micro and nano (bio)particles. A newly proposed method—Hilbert Phase Slope—presented high suitability for differentiation problems, providing features able to discriminate with statistical significance two optically trapped human tumoral cells (MKN45 gastric cell line) and two classes of non-trapped cancer-derived extracellular nanovesicles – an important outcome in view of the current challenges of label-free bio-detection for multifunctional single-molecule analytic tools. © The Author(s) 2024.

Bloch Surface Waves (BSW) consist of electromagnetic modes generated at the interface between a photonic crystal and an isotropic dielectric. This type of surface mode displays sharp resonances and high sensitivity to external refractive index variations, and thus appears to be an ideal candidate for usage in optical sensors. Nevertheless, design and optimization of photonic crystals is not a trivial task and constitutes an ongoing field of research. The sensitivity of BSW in both refractometric and adsorption sensing is calculated analytically using first-order perturbation theory for TE modes, allowing the understanding of how several physical parameters of the photonic crystal influence the sensitivity. Preliminary experimental results are presented, which aim to use the analytical calculations to allow for both refractometric and adsorption sensing in a single photonic crystal structure. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Over the last years, robotics has increased its interest in learning human-like behaviors and activities. One of the most common actions searched, as well as one of the most fun to replicate, is the ability to play sports. This has been made possible with the steady increase of automated learning, encouraged by the tremendous developments in computational power and improved reinforcement learning (RL) *** paper implements a beginner Robot player for precision ball sports like boccia and bocce. A new simulated environment (PrecisionBall) is created, and a seven degree-of-freedom (DoF) robotic arm, is able to learn from scratch how to win the game and throw different types of balls towards the goal (the jack), using deep reinforcement learning. The environment is compliant with OpenAI Gym, using the MuJoCo realistic physics engine for a realistic simulation. A brief comparison of the convergence of different RL algorithms is performed. Several ball weights and various types of materials correspondent to bocce and boccia are tested, as well as different friction coefficients. Results show that the robot achieves a maximum success rate of 92.7% and mean of 75.7% for the best case. While learning to play these sports with the DDPG+HER algorithm, the robotic agent acquired some relevant skills that allowed it to win.

The detection and extraction of individual pylons and power lines from high-density point cloud (PC) LiDAR data are a relevant tool for evaluating the power lines utility corridors. Moreover, the presence of high vegetation and hilly terrain is a research challenger in the available methods. The paper presents a novel method for the extraction of pylons and power lines. Two steps compose the proposed approach: a pylon detection step based on top view projection, denoted by DFSS - Detect Filled Square Shapes, and a pylon arms detection step with the DPA - Detect Pylon Arm algorithm. The results show that the proposed method could accurately and automatically extract pylons and the associated power lines, even if the dataset has low quality with downsampling, to reduce the processing time. Field tests were performed with a ground static LiDAR and a point cloud affected by downsampling voxel grid and Gaussian noise to simulate the expected LiDAR data from a UAV.

This paper proposes an original framework for a flexibility-centric value chain and describes the pre-specification of the Grid Data and Business Network (GDBN), a digital platform to provide support to the flexibility value chain activities. First, it outlines the structure of the value chain with the most important tasks and actors in each activity. Next, it describes the GDBN concept, including stakeholders’ engagement and conceptual architecture. It presents the main GDBN services to support the flexibility value chain, including, matching consumers and assets and service providers, assets installation and operationalization to provide flexibility, services for energy communities and services, for consumers, aggregators, and distribution systems operators, to participate in flexibility markets. At last, it details the workflow and life cycle management of this platform and discusses candidate business models that could support its implementation in real-life scenarios.

The new energy policies adopted by the European Union are set to help in the decarbonization of the energy system. In this context, the share of Variable Renewable Energy Sources is growing, affecting electricity markets, and increasing the need for system flexibility to accommodate their volatility. For this reason, legislation and incentives are being developed to engage consumers in the power sector activities and in providing their potential flexibility in the scope of grid system services. This work identifies energy and cross-sector Business Models (BM) centered on or linked to the provision of distributed flexibility to the DSO and TSO, building on those found in previous research projects or from companies’ commercial proposals. These BM are described and classified according to the main actor. The remaining actors, their roles, the interactions among them, how value is created by the BM activities and their value propositions are also described.

European energy strategy towards decarbonization, and its practical implementations in the different EU countries, will imply a continuous increase of variable (non-dispatchable) renewable energy (VRE), like wind and solar PV generation. This increasing VRE along with the progressive closing of current greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting plants, will decrease the net demand (inflexible demand minus non-dispatchable generation), reducing the amount of dispatchable generation needed to face both low VRE periods and larger net demand ramps. These problems need to be assessed to anticipate possible mismatches between net demand values and ramps, and the available resources with generation and ramping capabilities, so that the security and quality of supply is guaranteed. In case of expected risk, regulatory mechanisms, such as new market clearing rules or incentives to new flexibility sources or to new generation and storage technologies, could be required. This paper looks at the possible evolution of the Portuguese power system focusing on the net demand ramp problem. The historical and expected evolution of the hourly ramps of the net demand are analyzed considering different scenarios of high wind and solar PV penetration, according to different degrees of convergence to the EU energy strategic objectives.
