This paper presents a novel Nonlinear Model Predictive Controller (NMPC) architecture for trajectory tracking of omnidirectional robots. The key innovation lies in the method of handling constraints on maximum velocity and acceleration outside of the optimization process, significantly reducing computation time. The controller uses a simplified process model to predict the robot’s state evolution, enabling real-time cost function minimization through gradient descent methods. The cost function penalizes position and orientation errors as well as control effort variation. Experimental results compare the performance of the proposed controller with a generic Proportional-Derivative (PD) controller and a NMPC with integrated optimization constraints. The findings reveal that the proposed controller achieves higher precision than the PD controller and similar precision to the NMPC with integrated constraints, but with substantially lower computational effort. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The integration of inverter-based distributed generation challenges the implementation of an reliable protection This work proposes an adaptive protection method for coordinating protection systems using directional overcurrent relays, where the settings depend on the distribution network operating conditions. The coordination problem is addressed through a specialized genetic algorithm, aiming to minimize the total operating times of relays with time-delayed operation. The pickup current is also optimized. Coordination diagrams from diverse fault scenarios illustrate the method's adaptability to different operational conditions, emphasizing the importance of employing multiple setting groups for optimal protection system performance. The proposed technique provides high-quality solutions, enhancing reliability compared to traditional protection schemes.

This paper presents the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) MANTIS, developed for indoor inventory management in large-scale warehouses. MANTIS integrates a visual odometry (VIO) system for precise localization, thus allowing indoor navigation in complex environments. The mechanical design was optimized for stability and maneuverability in confined spaces, incorporating a lightweight frame and efficient propulsion system. The UAV is equipped with an array of sensors, including a 2D LiDAR, six cameras, and two IMUs, which ensures accurate data collection. The VIO system integrates visual data with inertial measurements to maintain robust, drift-free localization. A behavior tree (BT) framework is responsible for the UAV mission planner assigned to the vehicle, which can be flexible and adaptive in response to dynamic warehouse conditions. To validate the accuracy and reliability of the VIO system, we conducted a series of tests using an OptiTrack motion capture system as a ground truth reference. Comparative analysis between the VIO and OptiTrack data demonstrates the efficacy of the VIO system in maintaining accurate localization. The results prove MANTIS, with the required payload sensors, is a viable solution for efficient and autonomous inventory management.

The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) imposes challenges to the operation of distribution networks. This paper conducts a systematic assessment of the impact of DER on distribution network overcurrent protection, considering the behavior of Inverter Based Resources (IBR) during faults in the coordination of medium voltage (MV) feeders’ overcurrent protection. Through a detailed analysis of various scenarios, we propose adaptive protection solutions that enhance the reliability and resilience of distribution networks in the face of growing renewable energy integration. Results highlight the advantages of using adaptive protection over traditional methods and topology changes, and delve into current protection strategies, identifying limitations and proposing mitigation strategies.

Increasing the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) imposes several challenges in power distribution networks. Developed Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) provides fast and efficient charging of EVs at the Public Charging Stations (PCS). These chargers benefit from balanced three-phase chargers with considerable power consumption. Hence, the optimal management and task scheduling for EVSE should be arranged in such a way as to avoid overloading network infrastructure or imposing new peaks on the distribution networks. On the other hand, energy management in the presence of high renewable energy penetration due to installed Photovoltaic (PV) panels at the low-voltage (LV) distribution network should be elaborated to minimize the renewable power curtailment. Hence, this paper presents a novel model to address the optimal scheduling of charging stations availability and unlocking the Demand Response (DR) potentials at the distribution networks with highly penetrated PV panels. The energy management model is represented as a standard Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem which can be solved by open-source solvers. The proposed model is tested for a real case study in Portugal to demonstrate the functionality of the developed tool.

The competency-based learning approach arose from the Bologna signed declaration. However, a competency definition has never been easy and has been evolving and adapted over time, from indicators and learning goals to learning outcomes, which were formulated in terms of competencies. Meanwhile, the competency concept becomes discussed by pears, in particular, associating knowledge, skills, and human dispositions or attitudes into the competency definition. This information will be an essential update to the previous approaches and certainly contribute to achieving more accurate and reliable competencies information for employers and higher education institutions (HEI). This paper aims to reinforce the relevance of these concepts and suggest how each construct of "knowledge, skills and human dispositions" could be approached to formulate a competency. In addition, due to accelerated digital transformation, an example of a digital competency defined by the DigComp 2.0 framework, with proposed information regarding each of the three constructs, will be presented to consolidate this challenge. As future work, it is intended to analyze the eight different levels, and competency profiles defined by the European Qualification Framework (EQF) and assign a profile to each defined competency. The need for aerial platforms capable of sustained operation is critical in fields such as surveillance, agricultural monitoring, disaster response, and temporary telecommunication systems. Traditional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are hampered by limited battery capacity and inefficient energy utilization. This paper introduces an autonomous vertical flight drone tethered to a ground-based platform, which overcomes these limitations. The drone is designed to optimize its position and energy usage by harnessing wind currents, functioning similarly to a kite when conditions permit. This is enabled by a custom-designed autopilot system comprising both hardware and software tailored for this application. We detail the model identification process for three vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone systems, employing authentic data that measures lateral positional errors from the tether. Robust mixed sensitivity controllers are developed and implemented. The effectiveness of these controllers is validated through simulations showing their capability to handle uncertainties. Furthermore, the practical application and robust performance of the system are confirmed by a real-world case study, highlighting its potential in real operational environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Concepturealize™: a new contribution to generate real-needs-focussed, user-centred, lean business models

It is widely accepted that somewhere in the region of 90–95% of startups fail. It is often suggested that the majority of unsuccessful startups either failed to identify a viable idea, or they failed to execute the idea effectively enough to get to market before running out of cash. Two approaches stand out as being particularly well-suited to addressing these problems: Design Thinking and Lean Startup, respectively. This paper presents the Concepturealize™ methodology that cross-applies Design Thinking and Lean Startup as a single iterative process and that enables the entrepreneur to generate real-needs-focussed, user-centred, lean business models. Existing literature reveals a need for further exploration of cross-application of Design Thinking and Lean Startup (and other related methodologies) in the areas of business model development and innovation. This work answers the research question by review of prior attempts to combine Design Thinking and Lean Startup and presenting the Concepturealize™ model that cross-applies Design Thinking and Lean Startup in a single iterative methodology and that enables the practitioner to generate real-needs-focussed, user-centred, lean business models. By following this new process model correctly, a practitioner will be guided to uncover a viable way to create value, develop a deep understanding of the value proposition, the target customers and how to reach and serve them, together with the expected revenue and costs, all needed to properly formulate the business model. Finally, the practitioner may use the Concepturealize™ model to retest the problem–solution fit and understand how the customers perception of value has altered, each time a new product or new features are launched, looking to continually add value at each cycle.
