Globalization and the rapid market changes increased the perception in the Portuguese footwear industry that success in the value chain is closely tied to information sharing, the creation and development of collaborative networks, and the management of the knowledge of the various partners. Business to Business (B2B) and e- Commerce (eC) are a key opportunity, and at the same time, a challenge for contemporary companies. We believe that the insights provided in this paper allow theory and practice to better understand the reasons for the success of the Portuguese footwear industry and of its key cluster of Felgueiras. Based on the research conducted, we argue that there is a lack of B2B-eC initiatives in the footwear industry and the existing ones are still incipient. Furthermore, the existence of only one platform that to some extent addresses B2B-eC, also indicates that there is a need for greater research and development of approaches/technology allowing companies to explore opportunities to collaborate and negotiate among themselves. © 2017 by SCITEPRESS - science and technology Publications, Lda. This paper describes a laboratory control theory experiment supported by the use of a DCMotor Educational Kit. The impact, as a teaching aid, of the proposed laboratory control experiment is evaluated, having in mind the student’s feedback. The DC motor that is used in the developed educational Kit is the EMG30, being a low cost 12V motor equipped with encoders and a 30:1 reduction gearbox. The experiment is based on real hardware and on simulation, using the SimTwo realistic simulation software. In order to implement the realistic simulation the EMG30model was obtained. Students’ feedback was acquired using a questionnaire and the results confirmed the importance given to these practical experiments. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.

An emerging concept in railway management is to reduce the distance between consecutive trains, actively controlling their separation in order to enforce a continued safe distance. This concept is referred to as "Virtual Coupling" and it needs highly reliable and fast, real-time wireless communication systems. In this respect, TSCH was introduced in the IEEE 802.15.4e amendment to improve reliability of communication. Recent studies addressed the fast joining time problem where different traffic schedules must be merged when different communication domains come together. In this paper, we study the hoping strategy involved in TSCH to derive the probability of successful hopping upon merging. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a technical innovation that is already starting to play an important role in smarter water management, when a wide variety of sensors are incorporated into intelligent metering equipment and connected through wireless networks throughout the domiciliary water distribution network, being able to measure volume, flow, temperature, pressure, levels of chlorine, salinity and more. Water scarcity, aging or inadequate water distribution infrastructure, population variation, pollution, more intense and frequent droughts and floods, generate pressures that converge on the need to increase global investment in water infrastructures and to develop solutions for the conservation and management of water. The main stakeholders in the water distribution sector are the ones that can benefit most from the use of telemanagement. However, the results of adopting this innovation are contrary to expectations, with a slow change in traditional business models. The objective of this research is the construction of a value model that allows the identification of actors and value markets and the exchange of value related to the adoption of telemanagement in Portugal, having a solid theoretical basis and a real practical validation. Nature and biologically inspired metaheuristics can be powerful tools to design PID controllers. The grey wolf optimization is one of these promising and interesting metaheuristics, recently introduced. In this study the grey wolf optimization algorithm is proposed to design PID controllers, and the results obtained compared with the ones obtained with gravitational search and particle swarm optimization algorithms. Simulation results obtained with these three bio-inspired metaheuristics applied to a set of benchmark linear plants are presented, considering the design objective of set-point tracking. The results are also compared with two non-iterative PID tuning techniques. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.

Current mobile revolution is leading to an increase of wearable health devices development and consequently a growth in ambulatory monitoring area. These systems can be applied in ambulatory diseases management and diagnosis, personal health monitoring or sports performance enhancement, providing physiological and body-area ambiance data during daily normal activities. Nowadays several devices in the market have this type of technology, being one of them the VitalJacket ® (VJ ® ), a product from Biodevices, S.A. This device is a medical certified smart t-shirt with textile embedded electronics for ambulatory monitoring of electrocardiogram (ECG), Heart Rate (HR) and Accelerometer (Acc) data that is in the market since 2008. In this work we report the result of a university-company joint R&D effort that aimed to propose a reference extension architecture - called VitalLogger - for VJ ® wearable health device that enables sensors seamless “plug-in” to the company product. As a proof of concept of this novel adaptable architecture, we jointly implemented a prototype that extends VJ ® technology to incorporate new sensing modules in a seamless way. Both hardware and firmware were re-designed and extended to create a reference extension architecture, enabling easy integration of different sensing modules according to the user monitoring preference/scenario. Besides the ECG module already incorporated in VJ ® , a module with a Blood Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) sensor and an ambiance temperature and relative humidity sensor was developed and added to the extended prototype VitalLogger. This prototype was successfully built and tested, showing excellent results. The VitalLogger adaptable extension architecture has shown its scalability by enabling seamless “plug-in” sensing modules thus creating the possibility of swift creations of new products with different sensors combinations to adapt to different monitoring scenarios.

—We propose iW-Net, a deep learning model that allows for both automatic and interactive segmentation of lung nodules in computed tomography images. iW-Net is composed of two blocks: the first one provides an automatic segmentation and the second one allows to correct it by analyzing 2 points introduced by the user in the nodule’s boundary. For this purpose, a physics inspired weight map that takes the user input into account is proposed, which is used both as a feature map and in the system’s loss function. Our approach is extensively evaluated on the public LIDC-IDRI dataset, where we achieve a state-of-the-art performance of 0.55 intersection over union vs the 0.59 inter-observer agreement. Also, we show that iW-Net allows to correct the segmentation of small nodules, essential for proper patient referral decision, as well as improve the segmentation of the challenging non-solid nodules and thus may be an important tool for increasing the early diagnosis of lung cancer. Given a retinal image, can we automatically determine whether it is of high quality (suitable for medical diagnosis)? Can we also explain our decision, pinpointing the region or regions that led to our decision? Images from human retinas are vital for the diagnosis of multiple health issues, like hypertension, diabetes, and Alzheimer's; low quality images may force the patient to come back again for a second scanning, wasting time and possibly delaying treatment. However, existing retinal image quality assessment methods are either black boxes without explanations of the results or depend heavily on feature engineering or on complex and error-prone anatomical structures' segmentation. Therefore, we propose EyeQual, that solves exactly this problem. EyeQual is novel, fast for inference, accurate and explainable, pinpointing low-quality regions on the image. We evaluated EyeQual on two real datasets where it achieved 100% accuracy taking just 36 milliseconds for each image.

Non-uniform deformation in Achilles tendon is not influenced by a change in knee angle or level of force production during isometric contractions

Introduction/Background Mechanical loading has become the golden standard in managing achilles tendinopathy. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of different levels of force production and knee angle on the non-uniform behaviour in the achilles tendon during an isometric contraction. It was hypothesized that a flexed knee position would lead to a more non-uniform behaviour, due to greater differential loading of soleus versus gastrocnemius in this position, but that this effect would be attenuated by higher levels of force production. Material and method Nineteen healthy subjects participated in this study. A high-spatial and high-temporal resolution ultrasound system was used to acquire 2D + time ultrasound images during an isometric contraction at 25%, 50% and 75% MVC in the extended and flexed knee position. Local tendon tissue displacement and normalized displacement ratio of the different tendon layers were calculated. Results Contrary to the hypotheses, it was found that the non-uniform deformation, i.e. superficial-to-deep variation in displacement with highest displacement in the deep layer, is consistently present, irrespective of the level of force production and knee angle. Conclusion From clinical perspective, this might indicate the absence of a mechanical rationale for a change in knee angle during eccentric heel drops. Additionally, it was found that despite reaching high-levels of force, the contribution of the Achilles tendon might sometimes be relatively smaller, potentially due to compensatory actions. This is relevant for rehabilitation as the goal is to reach specific local tendon loading. Therefore, the tool used in this study might be ideally placed to monitor local Achilles tendon loading during rehabilitation and individually tailor exercises to reach that goal.
