Many neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy, can significantly impair the motor function of the patients, often leading to a dramatic loss of their quality of life. Human motion analysis is regarded as fundamental towards an early diagnosis and enhanced follow-up in this type of diseases. In this contribution, we present NeuroKinect, a novel system designed for motion analysis in neurological diseases. This system includes an RGB-D camera (Microsoft Kinect) and two integrated software applications, KiT (KinecTracker) and KiMA (Kinect Motion Analyzer). The applications enable the preview, acquisition, review and management of data provided by the sensor, which are then used for motion analysis of relevant events. NeuroKinect is a portable, low-cost and markerless solution that is suitable for use in the clinical environment. Furthermore, it is able to provide quantitative support to the clinical assessment of different neurological diseases with movement impairments, as demonstrated by its usage in two different clinical routine scenarios: gait analysis in Parkinson's disease and seizure semiology analysis in epilepsy.

Microfluidic platforms are well-suited for biomedical analysis and usually consist of a set of units which guarantee the manipulation, detection and recognition of bioanalyte in a reliable and flexible manner. Additionally, the use of magnetic fields for perfoming the aforementioned tasks has been steadily gainining interest. This is due to the fact that magnetic fields can be well tuned and applied either externally or from a directly integrated solution in the diagnostic system. In combination with these applied magnetic fields, magnetic nanoparticles are used. In this paper, we present some of our most recent results in research towards a) microfluidic diagnostics using MR sensors and magnetic particles and b) single cell analysis using magnetic particles. We have successfully manipulated magnetically labeled bacteria and measured their response with integrated GMR sensors and we have also managed to separate magnetically labeled jurkat cells for single cell analysis. © 2015 Trans tech Publications, Switzerland.

Human motion analysis can provide valuable information for supporting the clinical assessment of movement disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD). In this contribution, we study the suitability of a Kinect v2 based system for supporting PD assessment in a clinical environment, in comparison to the original Kinect (v1). In this study, 3-D body joint data were acquired from both normal subjects, and PD patients treated with deep brain stimulation (DBS). Then, several gait parameters were extracted from the gathered data. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have gained a lot of popularity in recent years because these are being used in wide range of applications. A collection of randomly/planned deployed tiny Sensor Nodes (SNs) can perform the task according to the need of a specific application. Utilization of energy of SNs is one of the key issues in these networks as nodes are battery operated and recharge or replacement of battery is a difficult task to be achieved. To address this issue, we propose a Bayesian Coalition Game-based optimized clustering in WSNs. To formulate the game, we propose a new Hybrid Homogeneous LEACH (HHO-LEACH) protocol for SNs in WSNs. We have used the concepts of Learning Automata (LA), and Bayesian Coalition Game (BCG) in which SNs are assumed as the players in the game with dynamic thresholds-based coalition formation among themselves, i.e., coalition among the nodes are formed using distance-based thresholds which makes a partition of the network field. SNs near to base station use direct communication for data transfer with or without single hop to the Base Station (BS) after interacting with the environment. During this process, each player may get a reward, or a penalty with respect to the finite number of actions performed. Performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated using extensive simulations by selecting various evaluation metrics. The results obtained show that proposed coalition game achieved better stability, and network lifetime in comparison to other existing protocols such as LEACH, and DD.

This paper presents a new marker for robot programming by demonstration through motion imitation. The device is based on high intensity LEDs (light emission diodes) which are captured by a pair of industrial cameras. Using stereoscopy, the marker supplies 6-DoF (degrees of freedom) human wrist tracking with both position and orientation data. We propose a robust technique for camera and stereo calibration which maps camera coordinates directly into the desired robot frame, using a single LED. The calibration and tracking procedures are thoroughly described. The tests show that the marker presents a new robust, accurate and intuitive method for industrial robot programming. The system is able to perform in real-time and requires only a single pair of industrial cameras though more can be used for improved effectiveness and accuracy. © 2014 IEEE.

Combining conventional and unconventional generations with hard forecasting properties and consumption variability has made the task of fitting large amounts of wind generation into unit commitment procedures very challenging. In this context, massive integration of electric vehicles in the electric systems, is expected. This paper aims at evaluating the adequacy of a generating system taking into account the electric vehicles and high wind power integration level in its energy mix. This study was conducted on the European project MERGE framework, and the results have shown that the generating system evaluated is reliable. Nevertheless, the simulations carried out for scenarios with adverse weather conditions (dry years) have revealed specific circumstances that might jeopardize the system adequacy.

Field experiments with a team of heterogeneous robots require human and hardware resources which cannot be implemented in a straightforward manner. Therefore, simulation environments are viewed by the robotic community as a powerful tool that can be used as an intermediate step to evaluate and validate the developments prior to their integration in real robots. This paper evaluates a novel multi-robot heterogeneous cooperative perception framework based on monocular measurements under the MORSE robotic simulation environment. The simulations are performed in an outdoor environment using a team of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV) and an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) performing distributed cooperative perception based on monocular measurements. The goal is to estimate the 3D target position. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Traditionally procedural modelling techniques are commonly used to generate new structures and are presently established in several areas such as video games and computer animated movies. However they may also be used in heritage applications to efficiently produce models of non-existing worlds for which there is some kind of knowledge (e.g. floor plans, photographs) to support the reconstruction of realistic environments. Similarly they may also be used to support the generation of distinct possibilities that allow experts to draw some conclusions or conceive different hypotheses about lost worlds. The present paper shows the benefits and constraints that may arise from the use of such techniques in virtual heritage applications. Furthermore, a whole method is proposed, for the reconstruction and generation of virtual heritage traversable house models, provided through the means of a grammar, demonstrated with the reconstruction and generation of several Roman houses from the heritage site of Conimbriga, Portugal. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Enterprise engineering (EE) is a growing scientific discipline that takes the increasingly needed construction-oriented point of view, and aims to provide synthetic knowledge for letting enterprises more effectively and continuously adapt to threats and challenges. In this paper we present the τ-theory, being developed to support EE and consisting in the clarification of a series of foundational concepts of the EE domain like: system, model, subject, object, function, purpose and value, among others. Such clarification is then systematized in an ontology, together with an instantiation to validate it. © 2014 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

In this paper we address the problem of musical genre recognition for a dancing robot with embedded microphones capable of distinguishing the genre of a musical piece while moving in a real-world scenario. For this purpose, we assess and compare two state-of-the-art musical genre recognition systems, based on Support Vector Machines and Markov Models, in the context of different real-world acoustic environments. In addition, we compare different preprocessing robot audition variants (single channel and separated signal from multiple channels) and test different acoustic models, learned a priori, to tackle multiple noise conditions of increasing complexity in the presence of noises of different natures (e.g., robot motion, speech). The results with six different musical genres suggest improved results, in the order of 43.6pp for the most complex conditions, when recurring to Sound Source Separation and acoustic models trained in similar conditions to the testing scenarios. A robot dance demonstration session confirms the applicability of the proposed integration for genre-adaptive dancing robots in real-world noisy environments.
