Concepturealize™: a new contribution to generate real-needs-focussed, user-centred, lean business models

It is widely accepted that somewhere in the region of 90–95% of startups fail. It is often suggested that the majority of unsuccessful startups either failed to identify a viable idea, or they failed to execute the idea effectively enough to get to market before running out of cash. Two approaches stand out as being particularly well-suited to addressing these problems: Design Thinking and Lean Startup, respectively. This paper presents the Concepturealize™ methodology that cross-applies Design Thinking and Lean Startup as a single iterative process and that enables the entrepreneur to generate real-needs-focussed, user-centred, lean business models. Existing literature reveals a need for further exploration of cross-application of Design Thinking and Lean Startup (and other related methodologies) in the areas of business model development and innovation. This work answers the research question by review of prior attempts to combine Design Thinking and Lean Startup and presenting the Concepturealize™ model that cross-applies Design Thinking and Lean Startup in a single iterative methodology and that enables the practitioner to generate real-needs-focussed, user-centred, lean business models. By following this new process model correctly, a practitioner will be guided to uncover a viable way to create value, develop a deep understanding of the value proposition, the target customers and how to reach and serve them, together with the expected revenue and costs, all needed to properly formulate the business model. Finally, the practitioner may use the Concepturealize™ model to retest the problem–solution fit and understand how the customers perception of value has altered, each time a new product or new features are launched, looking to continually add value at each cycle. EUniversal project aims to facilitate the use of flexibility services and interlink distribution system's active management with electricity markets. Implementing market-based flexibility services implies a change in distribution network monitoring and control towards a more predictive approach. However, integrating cost-effective monitoring and control tools for the LV network is still quite challenging. Within the project, a set of operation and planning tools have been developed for a coordinated quantification and activation of flexibility in HV, MV and LV distribution networks. The paper presents the tools developed for the Portuguese pilot and shows preliminary results obtained when considering network operation scenarios characterized by large scale integration of DER and EV. © 2022 CIRED workshop on E-mobility and power distribution systems. This paper presents the concept of a tapered deep neural network, subject to unsupervised training layer by layer, under a criterion of maximum entropy, to perform the estimation of breaker status in the absence of a specific sensor signal. The almost perfect prediction power of the model confirms the conjecture that the knowledge of the topology of a network is hidden in the electric measurement values in the network. A test case is presented with computing speed accelerated by using a GPU (graphics processing unit). The comparison with a previous model illustrates the superiority of the novel approach. © 2018 IEEE.

Microsatellite Instability (MSI) is an important biomarker in cancer patients, showing a defective DNA mismatch repair system. Its detection allows the use of immunotherapy to treat cancer, an approach that is revolutionizing cancer treatment. MSI is especially relevant for three types of cancer: Colon Adenocarcinoma (COAD), Stomach Adenocarcinoma (STAD), and Uterus corpus endometrial cancer (UCEC). In this work, learning algorithms were employed to predict MSI using RNA-seq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, with a focus on the selection of the most informative genomic features. The Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) obtained the best score (AUC = 98.44%), showing that it is possible to exploit information from RNA-seq data to find relevant relationships with the instability levels of microsatellites (MS). The accurate prediction of MSI with transcription data from cancer patients will help with the correct determination of MSI status and adequate prescription of immunotherapy, creating more precise and personalized patient care. At the genetic level, the study revealed a high expression of genes related to cell regulation functions, and a low expression of genes responsible for Mismatch Repair functions, in patients with high instability. © 2023 IEEE.

Direct Search Algorithm for Load Frequency Control of a Time-Delayed Electric Vehicle Aggregator

This paper addresses the topic of frequency regulation of a single-area power system connected to an electric vehicle (EV) aggregator over a non-ideal communication network. It is considered that the command control action is received by the EV aggregator with constant delay and the power system includes uncertain parameters. Due to the presence of uncertainties and the delay term, the frequency regulation problem is non-convex and hard to solve. The present approaches in the literature convert the non-convex control design problem into a convex problem with a set of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs), which is conservative and in many cases results infeasibility. In this paper, an innovative iterative algorithm, called direct search, is employed for the time-delayed system to design the unknown parameters of a pre-assumed controller. The controller choice is not limited and various controllers' structures can be assumed. Without loss of generality, a proportional-integral (PI) controller is designed. The novel direct search algorithm can determine a feasible solution whenever at least one solution lays in the design space. Hence, by selecting a wide design space, we can anticipate that the PI controller guarantees closed-loop stability. Numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the performance of the developed controller compared to the state-of-the-art approach. IEEE

The rapidly increasing penetration of electric vehicles(EVs) in modern metropolises has been witnessed during the past decade, inspired by financial subsidies as well as public awareness of climate change and environment pro-tection. Integrating charging facilities, especially highpower chargers in fast charging stations, into power distribution systems remarkably alters the traditional load flow pattern, and thus imposes great challenges on the operation of distribution network in which controllable resources are rare. On the other hand, provided with appropriate incentives, the energy storage capability of electric vehicle offers a unique opportunity to facilitate the integration of distributed wind and solar power generation into power distribution system. The above trends call for thorough investigation and research on the interdependence between transportation system and power distribution system. This paper conducts a comprehensive survey on this line of research. The basic models of transportation system and power distribution system are introduced,especially the user equilibrium model, which describes the vehicular flow on each road segment and is not familiar to the readers in power system community. The modelling of interdependence across the two systems is *** into account such interdependence, applications ranging from long-term planning to short-term operation are reviewed with emphasis on comparing the description of traffic-power interdependence. Finally, an outlook of prospective directions and key technologies in future research is summarized.

European energy strategy towards decarbonization, and its practical implementations in the different EU countries, will imply a continuous increase of variable (non-dispatchable) renewable energy (VRE), like wind and solar PV generation. This increasing VRE along with the progressive closing of current greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting plants, will decrease the net demand (inflexible demand minus non-dispatchable generation), reducing the amount of dispatchable generation needed to face both low VRE periods and larger net demand ramps. These problems need to be assessed to anticipate possible mismatches between net demand values and ramps, and the available resources with generation and ramping capabilities, so that the security and quality of supply is guaranteed. In case of expected risk, regulatory mechanisms, such as new market clearing rules or incentives to new flexibility sources or to new generation and storage technologies, could be required. This paper looks at the possible evolution of the Portuguese power system focusing on the net demand ramp problem. The historical and expected evolution of the hourly ramps of the net demand are analyzed considering different scenarios of high wind and solar PV penetration, according to different degrees of convergence to the EU energy strategic objectives. © 2019 IEEE.

Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) systems have emerged and greatly evolved in the last two decades. They have application in many domains, most notably in the field of Cultural Heritage (CH) and tourism, where people tend to rely on smartphones when visiting a new city to obtain additional information on the city landmarks. Expectations are that they obtain precise and tailored information to the visitor’s needs. Therefore, researchers started to investigate innovative approaches for presenting and suggesting digital content related to cultural and historical places. This article presents a novel MAR application, NearHeritage, which uses emergent technologies to assist visitors in finding and exploring Cultural Heritage. The research focuses on combining the use of context-awareness with Augmented Reality (AR). By sensing the context surrounding the user, the NearHeritage app discloses not only the list of nearby points-of-interest (POI) but also detailed information about the POIs in the form of AR content adapted to the user context. The solution presented uses built-in sensors of Android devices and takes advantage of various APIs (Foursquare API, Google Maps API and IntelContextSensing SDK) to retrieve information about the landmarks and the visitor context. Results from initial experimentation indicate that the concept of a context-aware MAR application can improve the user experience in discovering and learning more about Cultural Heritage, creating an interactive, enjoyable and unforgettable adventure. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The competency-based learning approach arose from the Bologna signed declaration. However, a competency definition has never been easy and has been evolving and adapted over time, from indicators and learning goals to learning outcomes, which were formulated in terms of competencies. Meanwhile, the competency concept becomes discussed by pears, in particular, associating knowledge, skills, and human dispositions or attitudes into the competency definition. This information will be an essential update to the previous approaches and certainly contribute to achieving more accurate and reliable competencies information for employers and higher education institutions (HEI). This paper aims to reinforce the relevance of these concepts and suggest how each construct of "knowledge, skills and human dispositions" could be approached to formulate a competency. In addition, due to accelerated digital transformation, an example of a digital competency defined by the DigComp 2.0 framework, with proposed information regarding each of the three constructs, will be presented to consolidate this challenge. As future work, it is intended to analyze the eight different levels, and competency profiles defined by the European Qualification Framework (EQF) and assign a profile to each defined competency. Barcelos is a historic city in Portugal with many tourist attractions, attracting more and more visitors who come to the city with the aim of exploring it. The main objective of this article is to boost tourism in the city of Barcelos, specifically highlighting tourist, historical and leisure spots, based on the development of a mobile application using augmented reality technologies and geolocation. This application intends to allow the users to know historical points of interest in Barcelos, as well as interact with a certain point. The results of this investigation were evaluated by testing the application by end users, with the aim of identifying whether the application meets their needs, in particular the promotion of tourist and historical points. © 2023
